I’m in Worcester, I may be heading into Boston this weekend. If I do I’ll send you a PM, I can bring my VAGcom and laptop. I have an older K2 usb cable, so I cant do everything on the newer cars since they are can, but iirc the engine controller is just K line
NY07RS4 - took your advice, autozoned it and got the code p0441-the same code I just spent a few hundy on repairing… hrm… will have to figure this out.
Beemercer - Thanks for the offer, I might be sorted out at this point and just need to go see the mech that did the work.
Thanks for everyone being on top of it.
drive safe!
Glad you were able to get it scanned. Now you have some evidence to help in your conversation with your mechanic. Good luck and keep us posted.
Hey folks,
If you have a chance, please check out this video http://youtu.be/Z6yCL43akbA of my idle from this morning. It was pretty cold this morning and the car had a chasing idle at just around 1000RPM on first start. It chased for a bit, I filmed it-restarted the car, it continued to chase for just a moment and then settled down. First time it’s done something like this, didn’t know if it was due to low temps.
I am taking it in for the CEL to have that sorted but wanted to see if anyone had a similar experience (also I have the - JHM 93Tune - for consideration)
Id much rather ask a lot of “stupid questions” as I learn more about this platform than make assumptions and cause myself some trouble…
Have you checked for vacuum leaks yet?
NY07RS4 - at this point I am still too “newb” to even know where to start with this car and it’s piggy V8. I would love to know what books I should be getting and what tools I should have as I continue to educate myself.
I have an apt. to hit the mechanics tomorrow and see what he has to say as he did the initial replacement of the PCV. my hope is that it’s just a vac-line or the valve itself got a bit stuck.
do you have a problem filling your gas tank ever? i.e. it fills but stops every 2 seconds, and you struggle to keep it flowing?
Cold start idle looks pretty normal to me. Mine will bobble around a bit during cold starts etc. It’s just a way for the motor to warm up a bit quicker from what I understand. I think there was another thread on here, or maybe on AZ about it, and someone was able to provide some good information about what exactly is going on.
The code though is something ya need to get your mechanic to look back into especially since they already charged you to fix it once.
sakimano - never have a problem filling the tank - damn hungry little hippo that this thing is…
Maddog - I remember C.V. saying something about building that functionality into the JHM 93+ tune. But you are right and I have a great mechanic that I have faith in. We’ll see what’s what tomorrow.
thanks guys.
that EVAP code often pops up with purge valve problems or gas cap problems. I didn’t read the whole thread so I may have missed that you already checked these two (relatively inexpensive) things out?
sakimano - gas cap has been checked and check valve was replaced a few weeks ago.
I’m going to have my mechanic check the cap for pressure and see if the new valve installed was a faulty one or perhaps something else might be the case…
So here is something interesting…
I was digging around and found this: http://audirevolution.net/forum/index.php?topic=311.0 which directly related to my “chasing idle”… However, in that video I heard something I’d heard the same morning as my chasing idle but never before… what I think is the belt chime. But I have the belt-chime-mod done… I’ve never heard the belt chime before, what would cause it to ping when the mods been done?
Does the ECU drop into a sort of “Default”
I’m so curious…also, I’ve not heard it since…
two things happened this weekend…
- the CEL went away and hasn’t come back.
- I took some shots of my car with a proper camera.

And a few of the carbon bits.

These are just the detailed shots I processed. There are many more coming that I’ll post a link to.
^^^CF on a black car is soooo right. Looks good man
Your car looks very nice!
I just wanted to publicly say thank you to and call out an audizine forum member “fly300kts”.
It’s guys like this that help new folks to the platform and community learn about their cars.
His front bumper DIY: http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...Bumper-Removal
Saved my ass in the middle of a snowstorm at 3am as my S4 decided to shit the bed and not start (cranks but no spark and for some odd reason my rad fans crank up on full blast when I put the ignition in Acc., as well while cranking it the cluster dimmed itself out for seemingly no reason - I’d started the car just fine, driven to meet up a friend for dinner with no issues, grabbed some food and came out to head home - crank crank crank crank… no start - then the cluster went dark and the rad fans full blast… anyone hear of this before? battery was good - no previous issues)
anyway - I wasn’t able to get to the tow hook location due to the front bumper mod (p.o.o. blocked off the access port to the tow hook in front - NEVER DO THIS EVER!!!) which resulted in having to flatbed from the rear - guess what - it’s too low and the nose is too long to get on the flat bed. I was able to pull up this DIY on my iphone, grab the tools I needed, pulled the front end off and got the car on the truck. I’d have been totally hung without this DIY.
Thank you so much - fly300kts - this is what a pro DIY’er looks like. In skydiving we do beers for firsts - I get to buy you a beer as this is the first time I’ve really turned wrenches on this car or this chassis.
Please, everyone continue to contribute to your community.
and if anyone has had a similar experience with the starting issue, please let me know.
also - thanks bangoman!
do you mean a ‘shout out’? A call out is what you do to someone who is out of line. A shout out is a big vocal thank you.
What a pain in the ass that must’ve been!
Let us know what the hell caused your car to have those weird symptoms once its resolved.
Yea, I had the side markers and headlight washers shaved off, but I definitely left the tow hook access point lol. Sucks for ya, but glad you were able to get it taken care of.
To be honest the job really was much easier then getting the bumper off my Corrado.
I will now be able to do the thing in about 15 minutes now that I know where everything is. We will see about getting it all back together but it will give me a chance to address some of the fitment issues I have with the front end. In addition, while I have it off I’ll be fixing the Tow Hook fill issue.
As for the problems with the car - I am seriously baffled and a little disappointed to be honest, there is simply no reason for it to have happened and the symptoms are just strange - all I can think is that something “burned out” and it cause an electrical issue perhaps a relay shorted out but can’t seem to figure out which it would be. I considered the Fuel Pump but am just not sure.
We will see what the shop has to say about it tomorrow.
