Launching C6 S6 Tip

Hi guys,

Forgive the nub Q-

Going to the drags for the first time tonight. Have never taken an auto to the drags before.

Has anyone determined which is the best way to launch the 6HP26A?

Based on street driving, I find the best launch is just foot lightly on the brake, no throttle, brake off then pin it. With mixed results though - sometimes hits hard, other times a bit sluggy. I have tried holding the brake, but doesn’t seem to work as well.

Thanks,
P

Paul

Without a tune in wouldn’t foot break the car. If you hold the break and the gas at the same time the throttle will shut due to protection mode. Think of the old prius… that had the run away throttle.

Stage deep. Hold the break with no gas and just mash it when the light turns green.

If your not tuned and you still have cats there is no need to heat them up any more then they will already be.

Also turn traction control off…or try both on and off.

Thanks guys!

Yes - I’ll do traction control off (completely, no chance of spinning 275 PSS), A/C off, windows up, etc. Try to cool the motor as much as possible before the run.

Should be a good baseline since I finished the carbon clean two weeks ago, and the manifold is brand new. Everything else is stock.

I’ve been wondering the same thing. I’ve had best results with the selector in Sport mode, TC off, and as mentioned above, just dump the brake and mash the gas pedal. Apparently there’s a launch control feature that can be activated with a vag-com, but I haven’t been able to try that and heard it can kill your tranny after a while. Maybe others can chime in about that

I don’t think the 6hp transmission has that option. It has a fixed mechanical TQ converter. If you read it somewhere cut and paste the information here but from a mechanical point of view that doesn’t seem very possible.

You could definitely be correct… further googling only comes up with stuff for the newer v8 models

Lol keep forgetting you have the deer whistle mod. You definitely have launch control.

Alright boys, we have a new champ (sort of?)

I only got one (flustered, such a newb) run before we got rained out - but the bonus is I can come back next week and run again without paying.

Had to get the guy to do up my helmet straps like I am some kind of big baby, since I was holding everyone up. Embarrassing.

Anyways this should be a good baseline-
Motor is all stock, just carbon cleaned and with a new manifold.
All I have done is heat shielded the manifold.
3/4 tank fuel
98RON Shell Pump Gas

Let me know if you need any more proof - I’ve got fingerprints, DNA tests, GPS signatures, and the molecular formula of the fuel used as determined by the FIA

(not really)

So close to 13s!!! I will crack it next week.

Congrats!

That is a fantastic time for a stock car (and the new v10 S6 1/4 mile record on AR)!

It looks likely that you will break into the 13s on the next trip, which is amazing.

The track you went to is ANDRA certified, so it should be eligible for the AudiRevolution 1/4 mile list I think.

You can have your time added at the end of the thread below. Be sure to mention that the car was all stock, and the octane gas. Mention the heat shielding too. Good to keep track of this stuff.

Paul is fucking hilarious!

Also, give our dragstrip tips thread a read before you go next time to ensure you’re getting every last hundredth out of the car.

Any chance you have a go pro or a friend/SO with a smartphone who can make some video? I’d like to watch an S6 run.

LOL!

This is awesome Paul! I had no intention of running the quarter in my car, but you guys are changing my mind!

Great times, Paul!

I’ve found the best launch technique is to avoid brake torquing altogether. It seems to cause nothing but problems for me.

I do what Primetime does with the S4 and it works well. My procedure is:

  1. Shallow stage (barely tip the second staging light)
  2. Left foot on brake
  3. Hold right foot over throttle
  4. Simultaneously release brake with left foot and mash throttle with right

I’m with Saki. Would be really cool to see some videos.

Are you removing the spare and tools from the trunk before your runs? With a light tank of gas you will definitely be cracking into the 13’s.

We are going to need GPS location and DNA. Don’t be ridiculous, we already have your fingerprints. ;D

Geek, if you can, that would be great. Especially if the car is stock.

The more documented runs we have at certified 1/4 mile tracks, the better picture we will have of the performance of stock cars.

That data is important as a reference, so we can determine what type of gains can be seen by adding particular mods.

Knowing the S6 is right around a 14.0 second car stock, really shows you how impressive Ynnekdude’s 12.55 1/4 mile time is in his A6 3.0t. Even with a lot of mods, that is going to be a VERY hard time to match with the S6. I think if we could get the S6 into the 12s at all, then that would be an amazing result.

Thanks for all the kind words and advice, guys. Not sure how I missed the drag times advice thread! I will study it intently. I’m not so much into drag racing, so I’ve a lot to learn.

Yes, I took the spare wheel out, but not the tools.

Also had the low washer fluid mod 8)

I went with my friend in his C7 A6 3.0TFSI- he ran a 12.8 without launch control. Revo tune (incl DSG), APR pulley, cat-back.

I have been in that car, and there’s no f___ing way my car could get there with out cheating (NOS) or some big mods (v8a6 style). It’s a large gap, especially for this boat.

You should have seen me in the line - all of a sudden it was time to get my helmet & long sleeves on. I was already buckled in and somehow got my jumper on OVER the seatbelt so I was tied in knots. Fixed that, couldn’t get the helmet strap in quickly, meanwhile the staging area is empty waiting for me with 100+ cars behind.

ANYWAYS - report back next week.

I have my in-car footage from my dash-cam, but it’s probably not what you’re after. I’ll bring wifey next time and she can take a vid.

That’s ok, I only just learned yesterday that the ESP button only turns ESP off, but leaves ASR active… and that you can hold the button for a couple seconds and it deactivates both. Not sure if it speeds up the launch, but definitely makes pulling out of a parking lot more fun!

I turned it off… but then I have never had traction problems except when flooring it at a T junction.

So not sure if would actually help. The trans needs to wake up and hit a bit harder - I feel that’s key. Mine seems to take off differently, depending on what mood it’s in.

You can see my 60’ was shit house. I am sure it could be better.

Great run Paul! Cant wait to see what it does with a decent tune and good gas! What are your next plans for the car?

That’s the best petrol we’ve got!

Could do race gas I suppose, but I wouldn’t tune for it. Even E85 is too inconvenient.

Next will be cats delete, followed by dual 2.75 or 3" with X pipe, and a tune at the same time to account for the new O2 sensor setup.

After that, we’ll see how v8a6’s numbers stack up and then decide
