LED City Light and DRL DIY with no codes!

Alright, so here is my quick DIY from where I did my City Light and DRL with LED bulbs using resistors to prevent a code from being thrown. I followed an old DIY from an european forum about a similar job but have no idea where that thread and info is. But if you use the same components as what I have everything should work without any codes or errors at all.

So here we go:

I got all the parts from www.V-LEDS.com
parts used are as follows:
-6ohm 50W 2Bulb LED Load Resistor (this is for City Light)
-25oh LED Bulb Out Load Resistor (this is for DRL)
-City Light: V-LED’s HID White 3 M-SMT 1.5W High Power Bulbs 194 168 158
-DRL Light: 2 HID White MSMT 27 LED Light Bulbs 89 1156 1073

Basically all you have to do from here is tap into the positive going into each bulb and then tap into the respective negative wire coming out from each bulb and tie the appropriate resistor to each positive negative wire.

You will have 2 positive wires and 2 negative wires for each headlight (if you do both DRL & Citylight). I soldered every connection and heat-shrinked over the wires. In addition I used waterproof trailer harness to create a quick disconnect from the lights when I need to remove them. I did this b/c the resistors need to be securely mounted, and not be near something that can possibly melt (they basically just burn up heat to dissipate energy so that each bulb effectively uses the right amount of power so the car thinks that a regular incandescent bulb is being used and it is functioning properly). Due to this I mounted mine on a small plate up near the cabin filter and then ran all respective wiring to AND from the resistors (remember 4 wires to each headlight).

So here are the crappy iphone pics to try to better explain. Also I’ve now installed fly’s LED’s so in some you see an extra set of connectors and that is for them as I have them wired up independently. They also are now all covered up with the plastic wire covering so you really can’t see much of any wires once all panels are back on the car.

Resistors and Small Plate for them to sit on up near Cabin Filter:

Sorry for poor picture quality, but hopefully the general idea is there. I’ll try to get some more pictures of the harness if anyone is interested, but using the trailer hitch was the best solution for a multi link quick release along with secure connection.

I’ll try to clean up the post later and put more detail in but I’m leaving work now, (ya for solid quality time put in while on the clock!)

Ive seen your work… It is awesome. I remember thinking dam this was very intentisive. Great write up

haha, thanks. Ya never know when you’re about to start a night stage rally so it’e best to be prepared. (for those that have seen my “driving lights”)

can you do this for the licence plate as well. I would love to know.

Haha damn, forgot I’d even made this thread, sorry for the pic links not working.

But yea, I don’t see why it couldn’t be done the same for the license plate like your asking.

Can you consider sharing how one would go about doing this for the rear plate lights? I saw an Audi with LED plate lights and it looks great.

Thanks. I saw something on the ecs site. I worried that there would be issues. Now that you mention this I’ll give them a second look.
