Let's talk turbos. (review and discuss)

Lol, just realized I wrote n20 like all the extra nitrogen would do any good.

Nice to see someone is putting together a proper kit for the 2.7t
Plug and play will make it more appealing to the masses. We should start seeing some more 10 sec b5’s with this in the works.

Enjoying the Count’s cryptic-ness lol. Jude it is N2O, just like the laughing gas I use at work… http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nitrous_oxide

My question to the Count as the bloke programming the ECU - putting the not-yet-available RS6-R aside, what would be your chosen currently available turbo for the fastest B5 S4? I’m guessing K04?

Also loving the cookies and milk comment.

lok, well played

you really shouldn’t use that stuff while youre working

lol, thanks… I’m definately not a chemist.
I know of one rs6’ed car that trapped 133. I’m sure there are other turbo setups that would yield bigger traps though.
I think I like this count character… seems like a cool guy.

jhm should hire him to tune

I at least figured that much out… give me a little credit.

just messing with you

what’s with jon bon jovi? Someone else here had a johnny depp avatar…posted something like this…then vanished.

I just really like that song “living on a prayer”
Plus the pic is classic.

Good Review judeisnotobscur

I will put my view on k03 ,
Props : I really like the turbo , fast spool ,excellent transient response down low ,with all the bolt ones its make the s4 a decent and pretty fast car , A correct tune and parts will yield 108-112 mph.
cons : reliability , lack of a better top end.

This is my car complete stock

Next week my car is going to be ready with the gt2560, let you know the review ( Tune by Jfonz)

Regards.

Rather than starting a new thread, I figured I’d post in here. Many people compare straight RS6’s to 605’s, saying that 605’s have more top end. I have little experience with either of them, but are 605’s actually comparable to RS6’s? We’ve seen RS6’s trap 130+ and consistently perform, but there just aren’t good times for 605’s. It is because only a couple companies have tuned them? Or are they really not comparable to an RS6, perhaps limited by the fact that they are a direct bolt on? Jude perhaps you can chime in some more on this, as I believe you have done files for both.

Well, I haven’t gotten a chance to do a fully built 605 car and get it down the track. The one I did with rods on pump gas was stolen before we could get it to the track.
I will say the car was plauged with problems, went through 2 turbos, each of them maybe getting in one pull and never seeing over 30 psi. (manufacturing defect, replaced under warranty: cost of labor not covered)
The two good pulls I got out of that car were amazing though, just no data to back it up.

I recently did a stock block 605 car on e85… no track times as the guy is big into street racing.

I also did that pikes peak 605 car, stock block on e85. But that was at altitude and we didn’t 1/4 mile it. I think k04’s or ft’s would have been a better fit for that course as the power band would have let us use 2nd gear in the W’s instead of 1st.

I think 605’s are capable of 130+ trap but i’m not gonna put them on my car just to do it.
We’ve already seen rs6’s do it, as you said merlinsmagic. They are capable and proven.

The Tq onset between the two turbos is very similar occuring very close in rpm. The tials hold more boost to redline, so it’s up to whomever is doing the tuning to make use of it.

Thanks for the info. I suppose in time, we will see what their capabilities are. We did a set in Sweden for an RS4 and while the reviews were that the car was fast, apparently it didn’t compare to a Loba setup (but it seems that nothing does). Too bad those are so damn expensive…

I think 605s are certainly very capable. I started a thread surmising that the tuning was holding them back (basically EPL cars that have hit the strip seem to under-perform).

To bear this out, we have seen 2 605 cars in the 11s at the dragstrip

  1. notorious VR - 11.9 @ 116 (self tuned)
  2. that guy on AZ last week - 11.4 @ 125 (self tuned)

and a bunch more EPL tuned cars in the 12s. Could be co-incidence…but I don’t think so. EPL appears to know how to make power in gear, but when tuning these cars, there is SO MUCH MORE to it than peak power or the curve. Throttle dynamics alone can make an otherwise potentially powerful car look silly.

The only other data we have is that PBOX run done by tweets4estate a few weeks ago. He ran his car, trapping around 130 MPH…but again that was on pbox (and his car has just about everything done to it you could do, including 3L, fully built etc). If I recall correctly he was also on a downhill slope, but I don’t remember the margin. His time was 12.1 because he wanted to just roll out and take it easy. It was 26 feet downhill though which is MAJOR at -2%. Imagine a dragstrip where you start/drop in like a skater on a 26 foot high ramp vs. a guy starting on the flat. He’s fucked.

Thanks for posting that link Saki, I missed that before. Hopefully tweets can squeeze a bit more out of his car, but the setup looks awesome so far.

You can probably take a 300 mile drive up to see it…it is at/on its way to AMD to be fixed. Blown head gaskets.

Oh the glories of the B5. It looks like we will be bringing in the original RS6 turbo’d car from the Sport Compact Car Shootout to tune it for full E85. Hopefully I’ll have some more updates soon, I want it to be at Shift Sector in November as well. We’ll see what E85 and RS6’s can squeeze out on our Mustang, stock bore with rods.

Make sure you post up results on here. I’m interested to see what you guys come up with.

Still waiting on this car to come back in for retuning. Josh what do you think of 770’s compared to RS6’s? I’m getting ready to do a motor pull and I’m strongly considering doing turbos while it’s out. I’ve always loved the idea of RS6 hybrids with some billet 2283 wheels and stiffer wastegates, but I can also get a good deal on some 770’s.

From looking at boost profiles of both, the 770’s look to only spool around 200 RPM later but allow for way more top end. Seems like a good tradeoff to me. I was talking to the guys at AU Tuning about that 3.0L 770 car you’re tuning, but it’s hard to really get a good comparison since it is only on a pump file right now.

Thanks for the review Jude, it’s refreshing to see an unbiased review for this platform. You had one that was similar over on AZ, it was awhile ago but I also found it helpful.

Side question:

Has “JHM” tuned any 770’s?

Edit: I’m an idiot, this might have been the review I read, just noticed the dates 2012… Happy St. Party’s Day!
