McLaren MP4-12C does 10.55 @ 134.56 - edit now 10.37@134.97

This is getting pretty ridiculous guys, as far as production cars go.

McLaren MP4-12C runs 10.55 @ 134.56 MPH Drag Racing 1/4 Mile, quickest stock production car behind the Veyron

We had some time testing out the 2012 McLaren MP4-12C to get some real world all out drag racing and performance results at Palm Beach International Raceway. The McLaren MP4-12C is powered by a 3.8L Twin Turbocharged V8 pumping out 616HP through a 7 speed dual clutch transmission. The car we tested had the 2013 updates provided by McLaren that brings the 2012 to the 2013 spec which includes a bump in power from 592 to 616HP as well as reprogrammed transmission logic.

This McLaren was equipped with the carbon ceramic brakes, sport exhaust and super light wheels which saves precious weight coming in at just 3,118 pounds with 1/4 tank of fuel. This puts the power to weight ratio at 5.06 pounds per HP.

We used the McLaren’s launch control system which held the RPMs at 3,000 and catapulted the car from 0-60 MPH in just 2.9 seconds, 0-100 MPH in 5.9 seconds and a 1/4 mile time of 10.55 @ 134.56 MPH. The in car VBOX also recorded a 60-130 MPH time of 6.59 seconds.

This was done on the factory provided 305/30/20 Pirelli PZero tires and the launch had a decent amount of wheel spin. With some sticker tires and no wheel spin we’re confident this lightweight British monster will go even quicker into the 10.40′s.

This real world actual drag strip 10.55 run puts the McLaren MP4-12C ahead of the $450k Lamborghini Aventador and makes the McLaren the quickest stock production car in the world bested only by the $1.6M Bugatti Veyron. This is a pretty amazing feat considering the McLaren is rear wheel drive. Take a look at the pictures, videos and timeslips below.[/i]

im surprised the spoiler doesnt go up to give the back en some downforce

Maybe you can override it like in the Veyron? Not sure. Don’t know much about that car.

down force equals slow so maybe it’s disabled.

That’s a really interesting car that not many people like for some reason. Also the name is now the 12c. I guess they realized mp412c was lame.

Problem with this timeslip is that it puts the fastest dragstrip n the world in violation of nhra safety standards. Lots of the cars these days. You need a roll bar at 11.49 and a full cage at 10.99. That means the jhm rs4 and b6 s4 won’t be able to get timeslips after they run full out. Weird. Wonder if nhra will change safety.

^^ Interesting point. There should definitely be an exception for production vehicles beyond some arbitrary date. No higher than autobahn speeds.

I doubt the nhra will change their rules. It’s a safety issue. Though everyone thinks their car “wont” have a driveline failure, it can happen. Also, oil on the track, I’ve lost a race by half a car length from driving over oil , also… I’ve seen a death because someone decided to weld in a roll cage made of exhaust tubing. Nhtsa came and took the car away to examine it. Ironic that the car/driver that needed the safety equipement the most, opted to skip the proper safety equipment and it killed the driver. you never know. I’ve also seen a TH-400 sieze and left a car stalled after the three lights at the end of the pass. Driver jumped out after struggling to remove his safety harness. The driver didn’t want to get t-boned by a 11 second Jaguar with a small block chevy. Tower screwed up and released two entrants/competitors when they should have stopped. also, any car with a short wheelbase is much more a a challenge to launch and keep pointed straight.

I thought there was some new rule that unaltered 2008-newer production cars didn’t need roll cages if slower than 9.99? Don’t quote me on it… but I’ll see if I can dig up where I read it.

Of course “unaltered” is open to interpretation I guess. With bolt-ons is it still “unaltered”?

Edit : OK so its just for certain events it seems? http://www.yellowbullet.com/forum/showthread.php?t=529684

Interesting comments. As far as being liked, I don’t think owners really care, the MP4-12C has been a success as far as I can tell for Macca since the 2000th one rolled off the line last year. So so many are current or previous Ferrari owners, but it is only putting a small dent in the probably 12,000 to 15,000 458 Italias on the road, LOL if you consider the fires writing them off maybe its closer than I think…:-). Actually the 458 is almost a common sight some days, heck there’s two white ones parked in front here right now lol…no McLarens though.

I’ll have to check out the airbrake thing when I get back, IIRC there is a button that can make it go up, but as far as I could tell it did not normally actuate under acceleration, but in the video it is actuated in both runs (in the lower position)…once when it was stationary, and once when it started rolling. In both cases it seemed to lower back in second gear.

There’s so many options on the centre console with “active”, track, normal and sport modes and stuff in between it frankly gets a little confusing. Neat that it has both tire pressure and tire temp readouts.

I probably missed the info somewhere… but how is it you get to drive these vehicles?

Sorry I should specify I copied the text on the OP from dragtimes, I reposted the text for the beinefficientit of those with restricted work Internet…I’ve never driven a Mclaren at the track, unless you include the parking lot behind the Mosport pits lol. I’ve never driven a 458, those belong to others in the building here.

Yea, I understood the OP to be from Drag Times, I was referring to the post about the 458’s and checking the airbrake etc…

I’ve seen a 458. That’s about it. Houston Coffee and Cars has some amazing vehicles. Even have an LFA that shows up.

I think one of the most amazing things I saw recently is that the new 2013 GTR will go 0-60 in 2.7 seconds. And that car is still around $100k. To me that is just stunning.

The NHRA rules are weird. There’s thousands of cars running low 11’s and tens with no cage. It’s kind of a gray area.

I think most of the local dragstrips don’t care if it is just a test and tune but anything official they will check. By the same logic JHM’s 10.8 B5 S4 run should have a full cage.

I’m not sure if it’s fair to say most. Some for sure. Ours forbexample is pretty slack on helmets until you’re into the twelve however a gtr who went something at 135 got the boot one day when a bunch of us were there.

And jhms 10.8 should indeed have run a full cage however it was their first pass full bore that day and it was the last because they had problems with the throttle body.

Hey did anyone else notice PBIR is showing 20’ downhill on the pbox? I’m going to question the accuracy of the pbox altitude measurement…is the altitude measurement also GPS based then?

You would think someone would have called attention to PBIR being abnormally fast in the past. But don’t forget 20 foot decline doesn’t matter… Right? Cars run records there in 2000 feet of density but because the Internet said decline doesn’t help much, we will pretend it doesn’t.

P. S. It is actually closer to 30 feet if you’re looking. That chart doesn’t show 0-60 and 130-135

Yeah I agree PBIR sees a lot of fast time, but should we believe the pbox there or not then? I’m just curious, you own one.

EDIT: took a good look at elevation data, the track and area surrounding it for miles is between 20-25’ elevation, flat as a board. Also you can clearly see in videos it’s not higher/lower than the surrounding areas, even 20’ elevation change would be very noticeable.

I have a pbox and I don’t believe everything that comes out of it. I have said this a number of times, hence my near total disregard for people who want to use 60-130 times vs. 1/4 mile times as a performance metric. You eliminate 0-60 mph (where we drive the most) and go from a certified dragstrip to a $400 toy. Tough sell.

I do know that the elevation data makes sense when I look at my pbox runs. There’s never a giant drop where I say ‘WHAT? That’s FLAT!’

30 feet seems noticeable I would agree, but over 1320 feet? Tough to say. Go draw a 2% grade on a 20 foot wide piece of paper (a change of less than 5 inches). Stand 100 feet awya and tell me if you can see it.

Sacramento sees lots of fast times. Why?
Great altitude thanks to being at sea level, and getting near zero temps at night and through the winter produces excellent density altitude in the -600 to -1500 range lots of days.

Cayuga sees lots of fast times. Why?
Good altitude thanks to being at 600 feet above sea level, and getting near zero through the spring/fall produces excellent density altitude in the -300 to -1200 range lots of days. We also have a slight drop in elevation (6 foot?) in at least one of the lanes I believe. I will have to go back and look.

PBIR sees lots of fast times. Why?
It’s at sea level which is a great starting point, but density altitude suffers, mostly +1000 to +2500 feet because it’s in Florida. Sometimes worse. 30 foot drop will help plenty.

Thompson sees lots of fast times from PT’s and Imola’s car. Why?
Shitty altitude at 1500-2000 feet or something so its not that. Reasonable density altitude because it’s cold there and they’re open through the spring/fall when it’s around 0 (but I’ve never seen him run below 0 feet…usually 600-1500 feet of DA. We have seen that there’s a 17 foot or so drop in elevation according to pbox.

So the two tracks where we expect to see mediocre times produce instead some of the fastest times out there. Both have significant elevation drops.

For the record, ATCO, Milan and Englishtown are all flat as a pancake. I looked through some pbox files from those tracks in the past.

FWIW… Thompson was ground down and repaved… Will have to get some new data this year…
