mid stg3 crossroads decisions

Hello

I’ve read the forums here quite a bit but have never really had a need to post but now I’m tossing some ideas back and forth on where I want to go with my build.

My current mods are in my signature. I picked up a mint completely stock s4 late last year and have spent this year getting ahead on the scheduled maintenance, fixing some small issues like a torn TBB replaced with the APR Bi-Pipe, relocating the aux waterpump away from the intake manifold etc.

I also decided that I would upgrade everything to support stg3 before putting the bigger turbos on. I’ve completed pretty much everything except the downpipes which will be done in the next month or two and then turbos/suspension/etc in the spring.

At this point I’ve had my eye on the JHM RS6-Rs and JHM tune but I have some questions that are probably fairly simple but I can’t find any information on the JHM tune. I don’t like the looks of the TiALs or what I’ve read bout them and they seem to just be used to grab high dyno numbers and thats it.

I plan on taking this car to the track occasionally on open lap days, as far as drags go they might be done every now and then when the euro cars around here go but I’m not looking to make a drag car only. I like how the few dynos I’ve seen on the JHM turbos have a lot more HP throughout the band even though it might not peak as high as a TiAL. Am I correct in seeing these as a good fit for what I’m after?

Now the JHM tune. Is this a tune where I have to send my ECU in? Is it a custom tune specific to my car or more like the APR tune I have now that is just “Stage X” flashed over? Can it be adapted later on if I had water/meth etc? I live at high elevation currently, is that something that would factor into the tune? etc etc

I’m sorry if this has been covered before and I’m reposting I did search around for more info but failed to find anything other than people talking about having it and loving it without details how they got it and what it did.

Thanks

Those RS6r turbos look to provide a decent curve on a stock OR built motor car…and the spool seems decent. I was talking to someone who has 30,000 miles on his RS6r turbos the other day and he said they are doing just what he wants. The tuner set his to spool pretty late because his car is old and beat, and didn’t really have a very nice life before…so the tuner wanted to build in a little protection for the old/rotten driveline components. Car is still a champ.

I reckon if you contact JHM they will be able to work with you on the tune rather than assigning an off-the-shelf file to you. You can PM count vohn on here or email SALES@JHMOTORSPORTS.COM And ask them these questions.

Don’t get discouraged if they don’t get back right away, as they’re a fairly busy group of guys. Be patient but also follow up. The phone works well too…they always answer first time when I call.

Thanks for the reply. Everything I’ve seen on them have been positive and haven’t seen anything negative. AZ is obviously pro TiAL but I take any info I get from there with a grain of salt. Ken Stevens at 034 wanted to lead me away from the RS6-Rs and to the 770s but the reasoning was mostly just that the 770s are ‘bigger thus better’ type of response.

I had planned on calling or emailing JHM for sure and thanks for the link, was hoping someone would have just some personal feedback as well since the only thing I’ve gotten from JHM so far is their short shifter which I love.

if you’re stock motor, not sure why bigger is better at all. You’re going to be well below the threshold that RS6r turbos can produce, while on stock motor. Same goes for 770s. What’s the beiinefficientficientit of the 770 over the RS6r when you’re not even close to the top end of either turbo? Later spool? ??? Great! >:(

Sounds like someone at 034 was advising based on HIS best interests lol.

As for the other parts of your question, there are 2 or 3 RS6r guys here, including the guy who invented them and the company who sells them, so stay tuned and stay patient…much better info (than mine) should be along soon…

Don’t forget the K04’s as a possibility as well. The JHM cars have also run low 11’s with these. Are there any customers that have had both at various times?

S6atron had K04s on his car (briefly) before going RS6r.

Count Vohn has had many a setup, as has jaybquick@JHM

Corbett may have had K04 before…I’d be guessing though. He just grabbed some RS6r turbos

I have had OEM K04’s, FT’s (F4H) on two cars and now FT F21’s. I can honestly say that for my style of driving the smaller F21 turbos are perfect.

It seems as though you may be looking to go bigger, had you considered contacting snow trooper about a single kit

I’m keeping K04s in mind as well.

My current engine is in great shape, i just recently rolled 100k. Everything is solid on it. Long term I plan on finding a spare motor and build it into a 2.9 or 3.0 stroker slowly over the next couple years and then either swap it in when my current one dies or maybe just put it in once its completed. I dont mind having some headroom with the RS6r that could be taken advantage of later.

Lol I figured something like that but then again he’s a salesman and 770s are $5k and i’m sure the markup on them is retarded. So a little more scratch for his wallet.

I looked into single kits and decided against it. I like the idea of keeping the car as true to its roots as possible. Keeping SMICs, twin turbos, even keeping them Borg Warner turbos or the bastard sons of Borg Warner in the case of the JHM RS6r. Full interior, no crazy stances or graphics etc. Ive always loved how unassuming they can look and would like to keep it that way for the most part.

mid to low 11s would be ideal for me as far as 1/4ml times, not looking to set records but would be nice to blow some doors off now and again.

I reckon it’s between K04 and RS6r. Either will make a tidy setup IMO. I like your thinking trying to stay close to OEM.

I’d probably go with the RS6r because it is so new and exciting. Don’t forget that JHM and their wives/families will have been driving around California with these for months if not years. Wasn’t the JHM B6 s/c car someone’s wife’s DD?

Wasnt it Jays? I think theres a video of it at a track somewhere with a babyseat in the back.

Welcome.

I think this is the question that many ask. I have asked myself this several times. After long long debate and research I keep coming back to the RS6r JHM project.

I think we need to all be honest. The TIAL turbos have been a major fail. Unless your doing a pull at 80mph the turbos suck. I just weeks ago got a chance to go for a ride in a Tial 605 car and It was pathetic. 034 is not known any more for being a shop of integrity so much as a parts pusher company with a large sales staff.

the spool if the tial turbos sucks the design of the turbos is all good on paper but not good when you add all the bits up. Tial is now on there 3rd version of the 605 turbo that started out as the 660? or something like that. The spool sucked on the last version and its only gotten worse since.

I know the Tial bandwagon hates to hear the facts but this Tial turbo project has been a failure when compared to what else can be offered.

When you look at the RS6r turbos. Its biased off a winning platform. The RS6 turbo has been successful for years, Take a great turbo make it better and let it loose to the masses.

What the B5 community fails to see is the limits of the 2.7T motor and its ability to flow air. If you want big hp your going to have to get a big turbo and your just going to have to shift the curve later in the rpm. Why would I want to wait for peak hp at 8000 with only really feeling power starting at 5800rpm when the other 5000rpm were dead with no power. I would rather take the Rs6r power at 3600-how much ever rpm you want to run and let it go from there.

For me this TIAL debate has been the down fall of the once great b5. The B5 was once a car of great potential now its been turned into a side show act of scamsters con artists and just plain hopesters that want to believe that this propaganda of the TIAL and even the 034 single turbo is somehow all that great… when in fact whenever someone goes and actually tests it they fail miserably

From the outside looking in I like the way the JHM RS6-R turbos look since they look like the best kit out there but if I were to build a B5 then I would want something like this:

Variable vane turbos.
