multiple misfires, runs good, then misfires again

did another trip from detroit to tornto, car ran great as usual.
suddently when pullingot into a driveway extremely heavy misfires car shakes violently. shut it down, doesnt restart.
Finally got it restarted, revved it a few times, got a bunch of blue smoke out the exhaust, but then it smoothed right out.
Ran good for the remaining 600 miles. THen close to home the following day come off the freeway, and while wiating at a light the same thing, heavy misfires flashing MIL and solid EPC light.

Scanned codes, pressed clear all, re read the codes and this is what I got.
Doesnt really tell me much… Why is it so random and across various cyclinders all of a sudden. Then runs good, then multiple misfires again. Battery is brand new…

this is cyl 3 with no misfire code:

coils plugs and injectors are pribably all original…Is this just massive carbon buildup showing itself now? But why on 4 cylinders at the exact same time, on different banks?

The time stamp looked like on the other cylinders they were all on the same day but at different times and all of them were at idle.

have you had your injectors cleaned and when was the last time you did a carbon clean. There is a possibilty that the injector is leaking because thats one rich cylinder or there is the possible chance that some of the plugs were already changed. Look at the coil packs and check the date across all 10

Everything is original as far as i know except 1 coil which was done at 50k miles by the PO. all other coils have an 07 date on them, plugs all say VW.

I did some logging jut 1-6 as a quick test, cyl 1 misfired 38 times coming off of cold idle, but then all cylinders ran fine, part load, WOT, idle etc. i was able to get most of them to misfire by doing no load throttle tip ins.almost felt like a lean stumble when there is a vacuum leak…

so did some more testing. the no load 2000 and 3000 rpm holding it there had it running a little rough. I said screw it, im putting new plugs in. OEM NGKs, car is smooth as glass again no load 2000 and 3000 rpm.
It runs jsut fine cruising or WOT pulls. I am monitoring misfires in vagcom live and there is nothing happening.

However i have random multiple misfires on cold start, right when coming off of cold start into warm idle, and i can still induce them on no load quick throttle tip ins. They are over all 10 cylinders. I doubt it is coils as it would be more isolated, same with injectors.

Will clean the MAF sensors today with the special cleaner and see if that helps at all.

Not nessessarly true. Coils when they go bad don’t nessessarly fail but die a slow death so you can get random misfires when they are still cold. General maintantence is to do both plugs and packs espically considering your coil packs are still original.

The MAF is a HFE so I would strongly suggest against trying to clean it. If you were having any issues with the MAF you would more than likely get a code. Or if for some reason you really think the MAF might be the issue you can always unplug them before a cold start and see if that helps.

But cold start misfires are super common and most of the time you will see cold start misfires when the SAI kicks on as it causes a lean misfire

Just wondering. Usually coils/ plugs/ fuel filter / carbon clean are the first things you do when you get a car and have been shown to be the best formula for the minimal start point with the next point being check intake install spacers and clean injectors to help keep the car running issue free.

From your posts it looks like your just now changing plugs. If so and looking at your number 1 plug and how followed out it looked. You might want to get new coil packs and check to see how bad the carbon is.

Indeed, I know i have to do the carbon clean just hard to find the time right now to do it. Im sure it is pretty bad as i doubt it has even been done in the 91k miles. I am doing fuel filter this week though, to get everything baselined. coils are next on the list. Thanks for the response.
