New B8.5 S5 1/4 Mile Record!

I figured it was finally time for me to create an account since I finally have something post worthy. A little background on my car before we begin, it’s a 2013 S5 with a GIAC Stage 2 and DSG tune which I purchased from AWE and had Komet Motorsports program the ECU, an APR Stage 1 & 2 intake system, light weight 19” Neuspeed RSE10 Wheels and 034 Motorsport Trans Mount Insert.

Now to the results; I met up with rynurz23 at Byron Dragway on 10/17/2015 with the hopes I might get in the low 12s as this was only the second time I had ever drag raced my S5. First time out the results were not that good, the day was too hot, still had heavy stock wheels installed, didn’t use 104 octane, used launch control (which I read repeatedly did not produce the fastest time, but I had to see it for myself) and I only got three runs in at Route 66 Raceway and the best run of the day was a 12.898@106.55mph.

The second time out I was better prepared. I removed the spare tire and tools newly installed light weight wheels, VP MS109 racing fuel (just above ¼ of a tank) which allowed me to set my GIAC Tune to Race mode this time and finally, the weather conditions were much better (see the DA results below). We hot lapped 4 passes and I couldn’t believe the improvement in my times compared to the first time out. We let the cars sit for an hour to cool off and then hot lapped 5 more times. On the 6th run is when I hit my best time and I couldn’t believe it nor could Rynurz23, 11.795@116.28mph!

One thing to note, I was surprised how consistent my times were without a divorced cooling system installed like APR’s CPS or AWE’s Cold Front system. I do have plans to get one of these systems soon from an engine durability standpoint but I was impressed with the consistency of my times. I am looking forward to your questions and feedback and am excited to be joining such a great community of fellow Audi enthusiasts.

Awesome times! On a cool day like that the cps won’t do much… Welcome to AR…

Thanks! Still have plenty upgrades left to install.

By the way, congrats on breaking the S4 record!

Welcome to AR. primetime knows just about everything there is to know about the performance on the 3.0t. I agree the colder out it is the less the CPS is going to benifit.

nice times. Great to see

Pretty cool. Minimal mod list too. Well done.

Yeah that makes sense, I’m sure its way more beneficial at higher ambients.

Sorry about the typo. Meant to say “Yeah that makes sense, I’m sure its way more benefical at higher ambients”.

Thanks! I agree, I was surprised to see times that low with the small amount of work I have done to the car. I’m excited to see what’s in store with more modifications.

I give up… every time I spell out the word “b e n e f i c i a l” it comes through spelled wrong and apparently I don’t have editing privileges yet.

Great times CMA. WTF that one run they lined you up against a car that likely requires a chute? lol

The letters N E F spelled consecutively are banned on this forum…it isn’t you. I think you need 150 posts to edit - stick around and get there!

-Saving poor cloch some work here

Thanks! Yeah he pulled a wheelie for the first 20 feet! He made me feel like I was sitting still but it was quite impressive.
Thanks for the info.

We were discussing this in another thread.

I enter all the results in the 1/4 mile list on the site, so I’ve seen what makes what happen as much as anyone. Bottom line is the formula is simple

Good tune/pulley/open free flowing intake

That’s where the majority of your power is coming from. With tune, the key word is ‘good’ tune. Basically that means APR and GIAC right now. Revo, epl, unitronic, solo, they all seem to miss the mark. If you have a facelift model 2013+ with the dsg, I would stick with giac. The Apr TCU tune has bee plagued with problems while giac seems to have it nailed.
You may find better results with a more free open element intake. The Apr has been found to not be so great and is quite expensive.

Next step is to reduce rotating weight.

Lw wheels/lw tires/lw rotors/lw crank pulley

To ensure the power is there most of the time , an improvement to the cooling system helps, however as you showed, you don’t need this to run a record in spring or fall.

The other stuff (headers/exhaust/high flow cats/test pipes/etc) seem to add a grand total of zero performance. There is maybe a small beit to test pipes or high flow cats, but I don’t think it’s even as much as lw wheels.

Thanks! My new wheels shaved off about 28lbs of unsprung weight. Still thinking about going to 18" wheels for even more weight savings. As far as LW brakes go, I’m on the fence about getting JHM or ECS two piece rotors. Thanks again for the info!
