New C6 S6 owner with a few questions

Hello guys,

Been lurking for a few months now trying to learn as much as a can. Was a previous B6 S4 owner who just purchased a high mileage S6 as a secondary/project car which I absolutely love and hope to get running to as near perfection as I can. A little background on the car:

It’s a 2008 with 155K and a 2 person owned car that I picked up for $6500. That definitely will need a little work to make right. Has a bit of surface rust under the driver’s side sill but otherwise the interior is in great shape. I also have yet to find any major oil leaks. Previous owner had it for 9 years and although the carfax lists the same Audi dealer repetitively for service the past 9 years it doesn’t give me any details outside of short descriptions like “45K service.” I’ve contacted the dealership in hopes of getting more detailed records to assist as I being my journey with restoring the car as best as I possibly can. They also confirmed that the intake was not replaced nor was any carbon cleaning performed. I also believe I was told the previous owner gave the car to his father at some point who let it sit despite still having it serviced.

Prior to purchase I scanned using VCDS and without any major codes and after 2 visits and the guy putting on new front wheel bearings and 4 tires I pulled the trigger. After 2 days of driving I had coolant laying all over my driveway which I’ve traced to a cracked coolant res. So currently I’m working to get that resolved. I’m also in the process of pulling off the front core-support to more easily access the belt and pulleys as only half of the belt exists and all the pulleys, belt tensior are all very rusted. Will be replacing all of these parts including a JHM crank pulley. So rather than fight with the 6-8 inches I’ll get from service position I’d like to be able to work freely without interference. From there I’ll likely try to get the intake off to do carbon cleaning and add spacers as well.

So that leads me to a few questions I have, 1 relating to the intake removal and 2 pertaining to the last part of me pulling off the core support of which I’m very close to completing:

1.) The intake bolts are extremely rusted (valve cover ones are even worse) - some of which I can tell right off the bat have rotted to the point I won’t be able to get a bit on there. What would my options be for extraction in this case? Drill them out?

2.) I’ve also stripped a bolt trying to remove the line labeled #1 from the radiator in my screenshot. What line is this? And can/should I try and drill this out?

3.) Lastly was just hoping to confirm what #2 was in the screenshot.

Appreciate any feedback on these would be much appreciated.

Welcome to the forums! There was a thread about a $6500 S6 here, I wonder if that’s the same one you got
In any event, you’re in the right place for S6 knowledge.

Rusted IM bolts…you could possibly try penetrating lubricants, freeze-off, etc. You could try and cut or grind some flats on the heads of the bolts to get a grip with some locking pliers, but there’s not exactly a lot of room for those. Failing any of those, drilling out the head of the bolt is all I can think of. I’d consider that an absolute last resort though (and be extraordinarily careful not to send chips flying everywhere. you never know if they’ll make it into an electrical connector or something).

both of those bolts highlighted in your picture go to the AC condenser lines. You don’t want to - or have to - remove them to get the radiator and core support out of the way. There are 4 bolts on the condenser itself that mount it to the radiator. IIRC one is just above “bolt #2” in your picture.

The PS cooling lines are the two long finned tubes that are right below the horn in your picture. The external air temp sensor is mounted on top (right about where that red tape strip is on the far left side, slightly below the midpoint).

Welcome to the forums fenixgoon beat me to it but I would take his advise.

I wasn’t able to see any of your pictures so I wouldn’t be much help there.

But I would suggest pulling off the entire front clip when doing the service. The coolant res cracks but so will the coolant Y that comes off the tank so look to replace that as well.

I’ve been successful in getting allan bolts out by smashing an impact triple square bit in. I’d go buy a set of those as you’ll need a set of triple squares for other bolts in and around the engine anyhow.

Appreciate all the replies guys! fenixgoon - thanks for the insight on those lines that should definitely make my life easier as the only other thing in my way are the 3 radiator hoses which are definitely stuck but I just need another hour or so to focus solely on that. I had purposely stopped my efforts this past Sunday as I had already had 4 or 5 hours in and was clearly getting fatigued and didn’t feel like that was helping my chances of getting those things off without creating more problems. Thanks again to all you guys though - really appreciate it.

I thought I saw somewhere about replacing the coolant Y wiith a brass fitting from the local hardware store - anyone happen to know a part know or dimensions or can reference me to that thread? (I thought it was on this site).

Also, I’m getting ready to order the JHM crank pulley - would you guys recommend changing out the seal there as well?
