I plan to call them tomorrow and ask several pointed questions. I never broke down and bought VCDS, but if this can do all of the same things, then I might pull the trigger, especially if it supports Key/KII/HEX/CAN. The screen shots they offer seem to indicate that it very well might do all of the same things, and the user’s manual makes me think that it probably does everything, though it never mentions datalogging, so the USB cable might only be for software updates or something. You can pick one up online for $180-$200, depending on where you shop.

Interesting, looking forward to your feedback per your call. I have an old KII but need a hex/can for the Golf. If this supports logging and module coding I’d be interested.

Okay, admission - I did not call. I checked out their “Contact Us” page, and they are a Chinese company with only a Chinese phone number available. I realize that many things are made in China nowadays, but Chinese companies do not instill confidence in me. So I will stay away just based on the presumed lack of support that I imagine receiving from a Chinese company. The extra $70 for the K-line VCDS is worth it to me to know it will continue to work, trouble-free, and not have to spend several dollars per call calling China if I need something.

just find a good used vagcom cable and when you’re done with it, you’ll be able to sell it for 75-85% of what you bought it for. So your ‘cost’ will be in the $75 range, maximum.

I hate buying electronics used, especially when it’s a registered product like that. I always fear that the seller will screw me and I’ll end up buying another one, defeating any money I may have saved myself. Is buying a used VCDS dongle/cable a reputable thing?

I did do that with my wheels, though - brand new, never mounted, but only paid 75% of the cost or so, to where I can always sell them for what I paid, as long as I don’t curb them. Plus shaving about 14 lb per corner between wheel and tire, for essentially no cost

Wanna buy mine?

I paid $348.99 from Europa Parts in 2012.

Its yours for $200 shipped (in the US).

I will take it if not

Interested for sure. Do I have to pay Ross Tech the $99 activation, or is that only if I want phone support from them?

The license is tied to the cable. Only possible issue is if you ever need tech support, but I’m pretty sure they still just want your cable s/n.

I need to buy a vag com as well…

ECS tuning sells this now so its got to be at least somewhat useful if a company like that is selling it, I have a cheap ebay $7 cable for basic things and it works for me, I have 2 friends with full versions of vcds if I really need it.

It looks like it is made by Autel. The hardware design looks like their stuff. They private label a lot of different names.
