I believe that it’s true they are remanufactured intakes. The replacement I got from the dealer here in Canada (who got it to me at $2100 CAD (pretty much a little less than JHM’s great price, damn CAD Dollar was trading at .72 USD at the time) In any case, the case looks to be repainted.
I would be careful where you buy an intake from. Parts warehouses are selling old stock and your getting in most cases an old gen intake or a remanufactured unit. Lots of the available intakes are reman but you want to make sure that you get the oct 17 or newer units.
And with the new updates from Audi comming out Im sure your going to see lots of part warehouse companies selling old gen parts for cheap as they need to get rid of them. So buyer be ware.
Reman parts from Audi/VW are designated as such by an X at the very end of the part number. There is also a core charge associated with reman parts. The intakes are painted BTW.
For those of you who dont know scottmandu is a troll account that is wong about 90% of the time. Its a biz owner who has ripped off toms of people in the past and has lied and been caught being wrong just about everytime he posts. He has multiple accounts and posts under several different names. This is one more case. Its best anything this scottmandu posts you just ignore. and down vote.
As we have seen Audi or the OEM manufacture of these intakes is indeed 100% repairing and rebuilding these intakes. and is still doing so under the M part number
For some reason my previous post went all in quotes - I purchased new manifold, spacers kit and a couple of other things from JHM. They replied stating they are waiting only on the inlet spacers getting CNCd, inlets are in!
hopefully you’ll get whole bunch of happy people posting of boxes of goodness arriving.
Is there any review/data on the effect of the inlet spacers? I couldnt extend out to the Tune in this purchase
Its always exciting when new parts come in. And a fresh intake manifold should be just the thing to help make the motor happy again. The JHM tune really wakes up the car and transforms the V10 to another level the good news is JHM usually has a holiday sale so if you didnt get it this time you can wait a few weeks and save a few dollars when the holiday sale pops up.
On the spacers there are a lot of feedback posts on how they effect the car in terms of keeping the heat at bay. I did a quick search but didnt find the post where it shows lower knock activity but over all the spacers do a great job of really blocking out a good part of the cylinder head heatsoak that can really rob the motor of power.
Several guys have mentioned how the colder intake temps have helped keep not only the power up but carbon at bay longer. Over all the spacers do multiple specific things that help keep the motor running cooler stronger and longer between carbon cleans.
When you do the install just remember to remove the motor pull brackets or they will get in the way of the TQ flap actuator.
I actually did this again on the 5.2 with a local car guy who did the spacers and compared them with a non spacer car the difference in heat drop and savings is even bigger than with the 4.2
Its a well thought out mod and its good for both maintenance and performance.
Nice, yeah I figured if we dont cook the crap out of the manifold then maybe the plastic parts will last longer over the years, mines a daily/family car so repeat quarter miles arent the issue usually. I will keep an eye out for the Xmas HP tune special!
Yeah cheers - I may have to go through a shop for the install as this is a mechanical warranty claim fix, but ill be providing them all the intel.
MINT - that makes sense re V10 diff vs V8, its a bigger heater trying to put out more watts…only makes sense it would get hotter. I shall read with excitement!
I can confirm that the v10 runs WAY hotter than the 4.2. So they have shown to make a really big impact. The JHM spacers have been a really good supporting maintenance and performance mod.
New IM in the works. 2008 with 51k miles. When I bought the car around 2 months ago it was running like a top. From experience, I bought an aftermarket warranty through USAA (Assurant is the actual provider) immediately. About a month ago I successfully flashed the JHM tune. Shortly after that (2 weeks), the CEL came on and it started throwing the Bank 2 Lean codes (P0174?). I brought it back to stock and brought the car to the dealer. Turns out one side of the flaps is stuck open and the other side is…flapping. I’m certain it was not the tune that caused the issue but perhaps highlighted an existing condition. The warranty will cover everything…fortunately. Otherwise, I’d be taking advantage of the crazy pricing on IMs.
Interestingly, when the CEL/codes started I definitely felt (with the JHM tune) roughness during warmup. Also some hesitation under acceleration. Not a lot. Before the codes started, the tune was scary in S Mode. I could have used a HANS device off the line. Crazy torque from a not very torquey engine.
Always great to get updates from everyone. If I remember correctly you made a post in the member profile section. It might not be a bad idea to start your own thread on your car so you can detail each step.
The intakes breaking is obviously a known issue. From what I understand the JHM tune cycles the intake flaps before each cold start event to try and help keep the flaps from being stagnant as the flaps usually only move above 4500 to 5000rpm. Lots of owners never really take there cars above 4500 rpm so you don’t get a lot of flap movement, That’s another neat JHM addon in the tune.
It is still interesting to hear that the intake went with such low miles.
After you get the intake sorted out and get the JHM Tune put back on it would be great to hear how the car runs. We have all seen the tested JHM tuned results and there are several great posts on the JHM tune and its results but IMHO after so many over the years have been disappointed with actual lack of results in other tunes I think It’s a good idea to keep letting new members know that there is a tune out there that actually gives you a worth the money difference.
