New Lexus IS-F - 2 door to be renamed RC-F - What engine is this?

Anyone?

Car and Driver think this is a V6. I think car and driver are on drugs and it’s a V8

What say you?

If it were a V6 it should be boosted. Jut from that footage I’m with you - Sounds like a hi revving v8

Should find out pretty quickly in Detroit. Found this in some show article…

"Without a turbocharged V-6 readily available in the Lexus lineup, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the automaker use an updated version of this V-8 engine in its new coupe. "

Hood vents suggest FI… blower?

That is absolutely a V8. I worked on way too many to get that wrong. Its got cubes and cylinders. V6 will never have that sound.

Whoa nice - has to be a V8. That’s great news, given the conventional wisdom that the new F would move to a V6. Looking forward to moar info on this.

Oh btw - at the dragstrip in November (when I got the flat tire), a 2010 IS F was consistently running 12.1-12.2 with just a full exhaust and LW wheels. It was awesome. I talked to the guy for a little while, and he said basically the trick was shifting at the right points, or something along those lines. Think I have an iPhone vid of one of his passes.

V8 - never heard a V6, F/I or N/A sound anything like a V8.

So it’s not just me who thinks Car and Driver are on drugs then.

What’s the deal there? They run a fucking car magazine and can’t tell what that sound is?

The brain often sees (or hears) what it wants to see but you’d think there would be an editor or some second set of eyes/ears at C/D that saw the video and approved them commenting on it as a likely V6.

looks like C&D got the RC F video confused with the RC 350 specs?

No they say right in the article about the RC F that they think it will have a SC 6 or a T6 and then reference the video, where they say it sounds like a V8, but they have come to a concensus that it is not a V8, but is in fact the ‘barritone 3.5 L V6’ that Lexus uses.

It’s shockingly stupid.

Sakimano is referencing the main article from which the linked video came from

http://www.caranddriver.com/news/2015-lexus-rc-f-spy-photos-news

Read under powertrain:

"But without a clearer audio sample or witnessing the RC F’s bark in person, we believe that it’s possible that this is the growl of the brand’s baritone 3.5-liter V-6 in a heavily modified state of tune. "

Thanks. I didn’t want to dig it up

Np.

I understand typos, but that certainly wasn’t. I pulled up other articles and C&D was the only one who goofed.

Mistakes happen even at the highest levels. I learned that when I watched " Top Gear: Apocalypse." We all know James May’s pedigree. In that program, while driving an F40, he declares that the F40 has a six cylinder.

I guess he was thinking of the XJ220. But that went through a lot of processing by the production crew before it made it to my torrent download. And nobody said wait the F40 has a V8 what is James talking about, let’s edit that out?

James May probably goofed because it’s such a small displacement motor. 2.9 L or something + turbos.

For the record, I HATE the F40. It’s hideous, vulgur, unrefined and is a sad attempt to match Porsche’s 959.

The 959 was incredible…and Ferrari had to rice it up in order to catch it, while the Porsche had A/C, a stereo, and a pleasant 911 like interior, and little luxuries like TPMS before TPMS existed. Ferrari was spartan and raw metal and plastic inside. Even plastic windows. The 959 was and is the greatest of all time in my view, matched only by the Bugatti Veyron.

Fuck the F40.

Turns out Audirevolution.net was right, and CarandDriver was wrong

Man, it’s fugly in pictures. Rumoured to make 460 hp

Looks like a Scion FRS

Awesome that they’re sticking with the 5.0 V8. I don’t think it looks that bad actually. Interior is nice as well. Think I may have to add this one to my Wishlist . . .

Damn, you’re not kidding. You could swap badges and just say it’s the new FRS and I’d almost believe ya!
