New Member Intro

New member here… Not sure if this is the best place for intros but here goes:

I Just picked up a 2014 S5 end of October 2013. Nice ride, better than either of my 335XIs in the ways that matter to me and the new F30 335XIs design language were not for me.

My 335XIs both had JB on them, the 2011 had JB4 w/meth and it ran pretty decent though I never bothered to make the 2hr ride to the track or local dyno to see what exactly what is had. Prob ~330-350WHP on a dynojet and maybe ~12.7-12.8 based on what similar setups ran.

This S5 I’m telling myself I’ll be more active with and at least get it to the track stock and probably do a tune and bring it back to the track to see what it does. The car only has 1300mi on it so no tune until spring, at least.

I’m 40 now and owned and built a lot of 5.0 Mustangs in the 90s, the fastest one of my own went mid 10s and fastest one I did headwork on went mid 8s. I used to do a bit of head/intake porting for a number of different platforms but mostly 5.0s. I stripped down and built up a number of engines, o-rings blocks, cams, lots of head work, custom intakes, some tuning on ancient SEFI. It was fun, and a great way to spend a lot of $ and go slow before I learned how to go fast.

I’ve been out the real speed work game since maybe 1999 and got slowly back into things with my first 335XI in 2008. I learned a lot from the BMW forums but have no real experience with Audi, so bear with me on that.

Thanks for reading!

Welcome to AR!

Welcome! Sounds like you have a lot of mechanical experience. Many of the guys here have lots of knowledge on these Audis, so you’ll be in good company.

Not that it’s relevant, but I remember when I was trying to build up my 5.0 there was a guy who went by the name of TMoss I think who worked over some heads for many mustangs.

Welcome to the site. The Mustang guy in you would enjoy an RS4/RS5 I bet. :)…similar philosphy of reasonably big engine in reasonably small car producing reasonably great noises and fun.

That avatar is funny. I never figured out why the Mexican guys had such a shit drawing of Mr White. Was it done by a little kid or something?

Whereabouts are you located? The S5 will be pretty excellent bone stock at the strip if you decide to go. DSG or Manual?

Thanks you! I’ve been watching your exploits as a non-member for a while. Good job!

I’ll be happy if I just get to the strip bone stock. lol.

Well, I never went by TMoss but I was somewhat known for porting the stock iron E7TE heads. They needed some pretty serious bowl work. I probably have some old print photos somewhere of what I used to do and some of my recorded flow numbers are prob still floating in cyberspace somewhere.

I did a lot of 5.0 heads… Lots of E7TE, GT40, GT40 alum, TFS, TFS TW, Canfield, Edelbrock small and big port. All sorts of intakes manifolds. I ported headers and even turbo manifolds- It was fun!

This is DEFINITELY the forum to talk about mechanical aspects of our cars vs something like AZ, QW etc. I just wish we had a more user-accessible tuning solution like cobb AP. Then we’d be rocking.

Thanks for the welcome! I’m in SW CT.

DSG all the way. I had to get one after suffering both a shitty 6MT and a meh 6AT in my 335XIs. I wanted to like the 6MT but there were too many issues like weak clutch, poor shift quality etc. I said never again on a German 6MT unless it’s a p-car but even those seem like the PDK is going to force them out. I hope not.

I like the DSG so far. It’s not perfect and really needs a mode in between D and S or at least remapping the D mode for a little more throttle response and boost before it downshifts to get moving. Otherwise its nice. I kinda like the farting on shifts. lol.

Mustangs were fun but too one-dimensional for me. I really appreciate AWD and Audi’s is awesome. RS4/5 look awesome. If I hit up an Audi meet maybe someone will give me a spin in an RS. The sound has got to be incredible!

Re Mr White’s drawing: maybe what qualifies for an artist in Mexico isn’t exactly the same as up here. More like the 6 million peso man… 'we need a face for this guy, we have artists…but I don’t want to spend a lot of money!

^^^ haha! Welcome to AR. It’s nice to welcome somebody that knows what they’re talking about. IIRC, the guys at JHM were mustang guys too before they made the switch to Audis. You’ll find there are more people here dedicated to the advancement of our cars than audizoo and quattrofail. Enjoy the S5 while it’s stock, it won’t be long before you get the modding bug.

Thanks!

Audizoo and Quattrofail lol. That’s interesting the JHM were mustang guys.

I’m looking forward to some mods, 1/4mi and hopefully HPDE next year.

Welcome! The 2014 S5 is a great looking car!

I was very much into the small displacement euro/moar boost scene until I got a V8 Audi. When I heard JHM were ex-Mustang guys, I browsed around svtperformance and the such - so much in common!

Welcome to AR!

What a minute, does JHM stand for John Highland Motorsports? If so, that IS interesting. They used to be big on the 4.6L mustang stuff. One of the first to really take the first version of that engine to serious hp, like 4 digit and on. They were awesome!

Unfortunately, the 4L engine in say the S5 doesn’t exactly seem to have been graced with much in the way of hp mods.

Thank you!

Only until JHM releases their s/c kit for the S5.

the S5 4.2 I raced against in California last week was pretty fucking fast…and will be making 600+ hp and threatening the 10s before long.

p.s. JHM = Jason Harbinson Motorsports

jhmotorsports.com

Need info on that!

uh huh. Different jhm. hmmm.

Do tell about the other S5 b8. I thought jhm just got a NA one barely into the 12s or about as fast as a stock b8.5 s5 3.0T.

I hope they get a decent sc kit. They really seem to be left out in the HP dept vs the 3.0T to date.

I thought 2014 S5 is 3.0 supercharged a la B8 S4?

Correct

Yeah that’s my bad, I didn’t realize they got rid of the V8 after 2012.
