New member's "new" 2006 S4 Avant MT

Hey all,

Just joined and have been lurking elsewhere and here for awhile. I’m very impressed with the DIYs and other great write-ups by justincredible, JimmyBones and others here. Thanks to all the good insights on this platform, I found a 2006 black Avant MTwith 66K on the clock. Had it inspected but had to buy it sight unseen and ship it to Ventura, CA.

Well, mechanically and cosmetically, let’s just say it it needed more TLC than i thought. Already did the VCGs thanks to the help here. Fresh fluids, new coolant tank, and steering arm bushings (car had a clank-sound going up and down driveways, etc). Luckily, the engine and drive train seem solid and there is no chain rattle at all, at least so far! Better photos to come as soon as a I can snap a few post-car wash. I (hopefully) uploaded one of the front grill, which prior owner blacked out with vinyl (I think) or some kind of black plastic-dip.

Overall, I want to tastefully clean this car up and upgrade it with performance in mind. Full disclosure: I am somewhat handy but a noob with most stuff on this car. I’m thinking of trexturk dps, JHM tune and then possibly the FI catback exhaust. I live less than an hour from their shop and they’ll do the install for me when I’m ready. Ideally, I’d like to end up with a full 2.5" exhaust and still pass smog in CA. Any thoughts here?

Other goals: the car has some dents on the driver’s fender. Not severe but prior owner tried to work on it to no avail. Per body shop, they can bondo, sand and blend it to match color or I could replace the fender and paint it. Which option would you do, if you were planning to keep the car long term? Not sure which would cost more, but the bondo/paint route was quoted at $550-600.

Last weird thing: per prior (2nd) owner, the original owner bought it for his wife who didn’t like the Recaros (“waaa- they’re too firm” :’() and the dealer swapped them out for a pair from an A4. I’d love to get a pair of black Recaros back in there. How difficult of a swap is that and about how much would you expect I’d have to spend? Luckily, they didn’t f&^% with back seat and it still is the original Recaro set. Thanks for the long read.

Welcome and congrats on a new ride! It looks really sharp and mileage on a lower side is always a plus in my book. Yeah there’s quite a few gearheads on this board. So it’s a bit more technically inclined than other places, which is awesome when it comes to getting help.

Seems like you’ve done your homework regarding this platform and you’re on the right track modwise. As far as a fender goes, I’d suggest finding a high quality PDR guy. From what I’ve seen in your pictures, paint doesn’t seem to be damaged and a great PDR guy should get it straightened. Regarding Recaros, PO just made such a huge mistake of trading them for plain A4 seats, sigh… You could expect to pay for the fronts from 500 to 800. It’s a plug and play if you’re swapping in B7 seats. If it’s B6 Recaros, you’d need couple of other parts as well.

Ha seems like you’re in luck and he’s really close to you too Downey, CA:

Welcome. Thanks for the shout out in the opening post. We do have a much deeper pool of technical guys here then any other site. You might not always like the advice but it’s the straight forward no bs advice.

Mod wise great start. The DP’s are great I didn’t know he still made them but cat less dps with the Jhm tune you will be able to still pass emissions. And on the good note being close to Jhm I’m sure when they do the work if there is anything out of line they will let you know.

Fender wise looks like Mr wrong found you a good body shop for you. If it was me I would wait as long as you can to fix it this way as you learn the car at can get a few scratches and you won’t care.

The seats might be a good thing as you might be able to find some rs4 seats.

Also if you ever have any questions post em. We don’t do that search you noob stuff here. We see lots of guys getting wrong answers on the other sites. We encourage members to post and send them here.

Thanks for the input and great lead on the seats; I’ve been checking daily but hadn’t seen that ad yet. Just PM’d him.

Nice ride… similar to mine. Sweet low milage find!
