New Smartphone Review Thread

I’ve been thinking about upgrading to the 6s+ just bc I want to go to the larger screen from the std 6. I may just take the Wife’s upgrade and give her my 6 if I can talk her into it. And by talk her into it I mean that she doesn’t was to ever go to a 6 bc it’s “too big” according to her lol.

they’re the same for most of us for the most part

if you’re a superduper computer guy, Android is way better

iphone strengths over android
?
I honestly don’t know where they’re better than android?

android strengths over apple
more control - they let you upgrade storage, and don’t make it impossible to swap out batteries (some heavy users such as physicians who work 20 hrs don’t have time to charge…so they just keep a second battery in their pocket and pop it in their Samsung…whereas the apple makes that impossible. You can also root the phone.

The list used to be pretty long for each case. Now they’re near identical for normal people.

I did find it funny that all the guys who were earlier in the thread arguing about big phones being bad now own big phones. Apple did the same thing. Apple also said there’s no point in having a stylus for a phone when Samsung launched the note (the note is the phone apple has copied with the 6+ 6S+). Now apple has a stylus.

From where I sit, they’re the same. I just don’t like how the apple phones get software updates that are cumbersome as fuck and that eat up your storage space which is not expandable. That’s really the only negative I can see. Maybe the 6+ was a bit bulky and needs to be more svelte like the Note? Otherwise, they’re basically equal choices.

Some things Apple people say are better are the things we’ve discussed such as ‘integration’. Reality is that I control my TV, my computer, and all kinds of shit in my house with my Android phone. It’s all ‘integrated’ and I’m not very smart. I did almost nothing to make that happen. The whole ‘integration’ thing is overdone. It’s mostly something apple people who are totally clueless about technology said, mostly because they were surprised they could do it. Reality is that anyone can do it.

The whole facetime or apple messaging argument is being left in the dust as more and more people embrace whatsapp (almost a billion active monthly users now. This stuff is all available on android, and has been for years.

just force it on her, and then within a year she will want a +

My wife bought the 6+, still not sure if I like how big the phone is in my pocket though. She loves it, but it’s something she carries around in her purse.

I’m pretty excited for the addition to Apple TV, I’ll be buying a new one when it’s available. It’s especially excellent if you have a kid. We also have a Roku stick for our spare bedroom, but even though it has more channels/apps, I prefer the Apply TV…I think these new features will make our Roku pointless.

Still don’t get the watch thing either.

I’m also still a huge fan of the compatibility and integration of all of my Apple products. I’m not sure anyone ever argued that it wasn’t possible to get the same result with other devices or operating systems, but the approach definitely isn’t as simple as Apple makes it. There are many alternatives to Airdrop, Airplay, photo sharing through iPhoto, etc… but those usually require outside apps…basically with Apple it is already built into the platform or OS. Most of our family has iPhones/Apple computers and that extends these seamless features beyond the devices in our household and can bring a group of people together from across the world. Sure, nothing social media or something can’t do, but it’s more private.

Your actually kind of right, Apple devices are great for people who are totally clueless about these features because they make it simple to use. Good luck handing an old lady/old man an Android based phone and teaching her/him how to connect it to the TV or transfer a photo to the computer almost instantly. I could do it in 30 seconds on an Apple device.

So I watched the keynote presentation over the weekend, and I’m rethinking getting the iPad Pro. I’ve always thought the Microsoft Surface was a cool product, so it’s great to see Apple come out with their own (likely better) version. At 1.5 pounds, it really could replace my laptop and would be ideal for travel. The retina display looks amazing, and I really like the idea of a stylus. Not sure why Jobs never wanted one.

Managing 70+ cell numbers for my company, I prefer the iPhones way less problems (software wise primarily) then Android phones. The few Andriod users I do have are always calling with phone issues email stopped, that stopped its endless. The iPhone is deploy it to the user and replace it when it winds up in drink (which happens often). I do agree app wise there is very little difference in platforms. I disagree with the software updates though you say apple updates are big bulky until installed and while generally correct they fixed this in iOS 8.1 or 8.2 i forget they, the point release are much smaller now, but at least iPhones get updates, Android’s OS version and updating is so fragmented it is impossible to keep current or somewhat current, also no updates for Phones older than 18 months, you can’t even get your upgrade from your carrier (in the US) yet and your phone is obsolete and can’t get new features. Apple’s OS updates go back 2 years or more depending on the device, of course features do scale depending on the internal hardware. Lastly being a systems admin and Power User I prefer the iPhone because I do not have to tinker with all the time. just my .02 cents

Os updates are a marginal benefit. Also not sure where you got that 18 month ‘rule’ but that wasn’t my experience. For example my note 3 was updated a couple months ago, and it was launched 2 years ago. My note 1 was updated to everything offered before u sold it off a year ago.

Further don’t forget there’s a huge android population who are rooted and don’t care.

What email program are you running that has all these problems? I run good and it is excellent. I believe we have several thousand good users and the feedback our guys give me is that android and apple devices work equally well.

most but not all, that was my basic point, while samsung is better than other manufacturers it is still a very fragmented ecosystem. With regards to Good you need extra paid service per user. It usually the samsung/andriod app, but been having better results with MS’ mobile Outlook App

I don’t think there’s a point to swapping out a 6 for a 6S. The watch is already fantastic and should hold up for a long time. Like a bluetooth headset, you could be carrying the original one you bought in 2003 and it would still work with your current iPhone. It’s just a dumb screen that shows you notifications from your phone, which is pretty useful. The best feature is if you leave your phone on the charger, the watch still gets notifications over wifi proxied from the phone. It’s hard to respond (though not impossible) but you can still see what’s going on.

The iPad pro is going to be pretty great but it’s a $1300 purchase with a keyboard and LTE. You’d have to be considering a laptop replacement at that price (or a high end Chromebook, or an alternative to a Macbook 12").

I wouldn’t get the LTE version. Probably 128gb + the keyboard and stylus. I may have a fair amount of work travel ahead of me, so definitely thinking of this as a notebook replacement.

The LTE is super useful - it always works without fucking with airport wifi, hotel wifi, etc. Your phone plan has so much data you can’t use it all. Only costs $10 to add a device to shared data plan.

^^ how are you liking the band on your watch? Comfortable? I have the sport band.

Yeah the milanese loop is great. Some people say if you wear it with the strap backwards it can catch your hair, but that hasn’t happened to me. It breathes nicely and since it’s magnetic you can loosen it at points in the day. Paying for stuff with it is cool but not killer. Using it at the airport for TSA and at the gate to scan the QR code is useful.

Paying for shit with the watch is definitely a cool feature. I just wish more stores had the option.

You still have to hit a fuck ton of buttons on the keypad, decline to donate money to diabetes, enter your frequent shopper phone number, and then they hand you a 2 foot long receipt for a red bull. It’s not quite the “fuck you I’m out” checkout I was looking for.

Dude it’s a two-button tap on your watch. All of that other stuff is the store’s fault.

Do Americans not have ‘tap’ with the credit card? Your financial system is so old fashioned. We’ve had this for years.

I don’t see the appeal of the watch/phone pay . turn on phone, u lock phone, hold it there for 4 or 5 seconds, then use your Fingerprint… Blah blah blah. Retardedly complicated so people can say ‘apple is amazing!’

Watch this. Up to $100 (aka 99.999% of purchases you make). Instant. No bullshit. If everyone used their apple phone to pay for 20 years and then credit card tap was invented, we’d all throw our phones in the garbage and say ‘thank God that’s over’

Lol that’s not how Apple Watch pay works. You just double tap the side button and hold it in front of the reader. Takes less than two (2) seconds.

When I buy the 2d gen watch, I’m going to send you my old one just to piss you off

This is the 4th generation watch. Apple was smart enough not to release the first 3. Google and their gang of OEM hacks have no such restraint. Samsung cracks me up. Everyone is allowed to code and ship any stupid feature. They’re all half baked.

On my third try. Damn thing’s been “verifying” for an hour lol. Come on, Apple!
