New Smartphone Review Thread

Nice! Let us know what you think of it. I love my Microsoft Band. It’s funny because while back in March I said it was holding up “well”, it started to somewhat fall apart last month (looking real “tired” lol)

Fortunately, the Microsoft Store swapped mine out for a brand new one. They took real good care of me (I was having an issue in which the band was starting to fall apart - 6 months after pretty heavy use (shooting, hunting, snowboarding, gym, etc).

^^ for sure. I’ll report back. Glad to hear Microsoft hooked you up.

It’s pretty damn awesome.

p.s. This isn’t the calculator watch thread.

Hahahaha yes but it’s tangentially related to smartphones because it needs to be paired to my 6 Plus.

funny that this is true

^^ hater.

How do you like it so far?

http://theoatmeal.com/blog/apple_watch

I’ve had it for a little over a week now, and I think the bottom line is that it’s an unnecessary but completely awesome device. That article you cited hits on some really good points, and I agree with most of it. The first point is obviously true - the Apple Watch is a compliment to, not a substitute for, the iPhone. There’s no web surfing or keyboard to write texts or respond to emails.

However, what the Watch does do well is reduce how often you use your phone. The “taps” that I get on my wrist for text messages and app alerts are pretty neat. I read nearly all of them on my watch now. For text messages, the watch supplies a pre-selected set of responses, or you can dictate responses through Siri. I’ve used both, and actually the dictation is quite good. Over the weekend, for example, I was out of town for a wedding. In the car ride both to and from the wedding, I used the voice dictation feature to send texts and had almost no issues with it.

Another good point from that article is the battery life: it has far exceeded my expectations. I think the lowest it dropped to after a full day’s use was in the 30% range. In total, I’d guess that, with normal use, the battery likely lasts longer than 24 hours. The battery also charges farily quickly - much faster than my 6 Plus.

Now to a couple of things in the article I disagree with. The crown is absolutely not “useless.” I find it quite useful. It scrolls through the screen flawlessly and allows you to read everything without your finger getting in the way (the screen is probably smaller than you think). For texts, emails, and app alerts, I always use the crown to scroll up and down the screen.

The second disagreement I have is with respect to phone calls. They work very well when you want to use a speaker phone. I’ve used the watch for about 15 calls so far and never had an issue. The watch’s speaker isn’t loud, but I’ve yet to have a problem understanding the person on the other line. I like the phone feature and will continue using it.

There really are a ton of additional things I could say about the watch, and Apple is releasing a big OS update this Fall that will add a lot more functionality. One final thing that is very cool is the ability to use the watch as an iPod (I think even our resident hater would agree with this :)). You can sync up to 2 GB of music or 250 songs to store on the watch’s memory. I chose the 250 song option and just bought a pair of Beats bluetooth headphones. This is incredibly convenient when I’m at the gym - no more corded arm strap with my old 4S when I work out. It’s completely wireless now - I just stream the music from my watch. The sound quality is also great, though that likely depends on the quality of headphones you buy (admittedly, the Beats ones I picked up weren’t cheap).

So those are my preliminary impressions. No buyer’s remorse here - it’s a really cool (and comfortable) gadget.

Edit: these are the headphones I went with - highly recommended.

Nice! Glad you like it!

Admittedly, I haven’t seen one in person yet. Will check it out at some point.

Got the 38mm milanese loop. I didn’t previously wear a watch. Love it. I think they’re worth about what the retail price of a phone is, $650 or so. It’s that useful.

I like that strap.

Like that Milanese loop band. Why 38 and not 42mm? Just curious.

My wrist isn’t huge. It gets about 36 hours battery life, which is 40% more than an iPhone 6.

Ah so band related choice then? No smaller bands with the 42?

New Apple products unveiled today. I would love the new iPad Pro but can’t justify it, since I already own a 2011 MacBook Pro.

Anyone thinking of getting the 6S or 6S+? New processor is supposedly 70% faster than the previous model.

Also, I’m digging the OS update to the Watch:

http://blogs.wsj.com/personal-technology/2015/09/09/apple-watch-finally-getting-native-apps-new-features-this-week/

still can’t see the point of the watch

6S and 6S+ aren’t for you…they’re for people still hanging on to 4 and 5 models

I wouldn’t bother upgrading. You’ll just eat financial shit to the tune of about $500 for literally a nominal change. Do you find your 6+ particularly slow? Because I bet it’s pretty quick and you’re happy with it. The only people complaining their 6/6+ are slow are people who were just told they were slow by Apple today.

Oh no I’m not upgrading - still very happy with my phone. I was just seeing whether anyone on here has plans to switch.

And the Watch is definitely not for you - I think you’d just be so pissed that it offers very few things that you can’t do on your phone. For me, it’s just a neat gadget.

Nah, I’m not upgrading from my 6 either.

Still mulling over if I should go back to android. iOS is different, and definitely better than (lol) Windows Phone. But I was an Android user for the last 4+ years or so (used every Google Nexus phone up to the Nexus 5 - well apart from the first HTC one) and the Google services has me spoiled. I hate iTunes.

^^ I get the sense that Android users are generally not happy when they switch over to the iPhone.
