I’ve had it for a little over a week now, and I think the bottom line is that it’s an unnecessary but completely awesome device. That article you cited hits on some really good points, and I agree with most of it. The first point is obviously true - the Apple Watch is a compliment to, not a substitute for, the iPhone. There’s no web surfing or keyboard to write texts or respond to emails.
However, what the Watch does do well is reduce how often you use your phone. The “taps” that I get on my wrist for text messages and app alerts are pretty neat. I read nearly all of them on my watch now. For text messages, the watch supplies a pre-selected set of responses, or you can dictate responses through Siri. I’ve used both, and actually the dictation is quite good. Over the weekend, for example, I was out of town for a wedding. In the car ride both to and from the wedding, I used the voice dictation feature to send texts and had almost no issues with it.
Another good point from that article is the battery life: it has far exceeded my expectations. I think the lowest it dropped to after a full day’s use was in the 30% range. In total, I’d guess that, with normal use, the battery likely lasts longer than 24 hours. The battery also charges farily quickly - much faster than my 6 Plus.
Now to a couple of things in the article I disagree with. The crown is absolutely not “useless.” I find it quite useful. It scrolls through the screen flawlessly and allows you to read everything without your finger getting in the way (the screen is probably smaller than you think). For texts, emails, and app alerts, I always use the crown to scroll up and down the screen.
The second disagreement I have is with respect to phone calls. They work very well when you want to use a speaker phone. I’ve used the watch for about 15 calls so far and never had an issue. The watch’s speaker isn’t loud, but I’ve yet to have a problem understanding the person on the other line. I like the phone feature and will continue using it.
There really are a ton of additional things I could say about the watch, and Apple is releasing a big OS update this Fall that will add a lot more functionality. One final thing that is very cool is the ability to use the watch as an iPod (I think even our resident hater would agree with this :)). You can sync up to 2 GB of music or 250 songs to store on the watch’s memory. I chose the 250 song option and just bought a pair of Beats bluetooth headphones. This is incredibly convenient when I’m at the gym - no more corded arm strap with my old 4S when I work out. It’s completely wireless now - I just stream the music from my watch. The sound quality is also great, though that likely depends on the quality of headphones you buy (admittedly, the Beats ones I picked up weren’t cheap).
So those are my preliminary impressions. No buyer’s remorse here - it’s a really cool (and comfortable) gadget.
Edit: these are the headphones I went with - highly recommended.
