New Toy!

Hello forum! I was directed here after a rather comical thread I started on AZ about modifying a C5 4.2. I was told the engine was not modifiable ::slight_smile:

A kind user over there sent me a PM and directed me to this site.

Anyway, first time Audi owner, 20+ year “car guy”. Never owned a car I did not modify in performance and/or looks department. Plans for this are the family DD and occasional track weekend. Car has 129k on the ticker and a freshly rebuilt tip (with a warranty). Plans are simple for now … AFE filter, center muffler delete and DIY NefMoto tune. When the trans dies, then I’ll go nuts with a 6-speed swap, full exhaust, P&P, coilovers, etc. for a dedicated track car.

In the meantime, I look forward to bouncing some 4.2 ideas off of the forum and learning what I can. Anyone here worked with NefMoto software before and/or the AWN?

Welcome to the forum , Im sure you will get all the help over here.
Regards

welcome, we were discussing that thread on az a bit in a thread here (the “lulz on other forums” thread in the general discussion section).

I was going to post on az but I don’t have my a6 anymore and that thread was far too painful to interject. only guy worth listening to in that thread would be rednecktruck, he’s done a fair amount of the things the others claim costs too much or makes no difference.

an a6 4.2 may not be the best option to modify, but thats no reason to give up and get another car. I like your spirit for not giving into all of the naysayers over there.

sounds like you know the typical path to power, so I’ll skip rehashing that. if you have precats (01+) gutting them be your best bang for the buck modification at the moment.

also saw you mentioned you are near JHM’s 4.2 guru, he posts here and can offer you better advice on your particular car than anyone else.

there are a bunch of former modded a6 4.2 owners here, so feel free to ask any questions you may have. best of luck with the car.

ps, a jhm tune will do far more than an apr one (re the naysayer in your az thread)

Yeah, I can’t imagine wanting to self tune my A6 using information garnered from a bunch of thieves on n e f…NONE OF WHOM have a fast Audi they have tuned. Literally NONE.

It’s not easy to tune a German car, in German, when the process is nothing like it is for the cars most people come to Audi from where they fuck with a couple of maps and think they’re doing great things. Most of those other cars they come from are boosted…and as we know, 80% of the gains on a turbo or blown car will come from super basic stuff like boost. If you’re really good at the other 20% you can differntiate yourself, but not dramatically.

On an NA car, there is no 80% from boost…so the 20% is actually the 100%. Most of the Audi tuners have always been tuning companies who worked on boosted Audis with small engines, and the cloak of invincibility (upping boost to make easy gains) made us all think the Audi tuners knew what they were doing. In the early 2000s the arrival of the 4.2 Audis showed us that in fact, most of them didn’t.

For anyone who wants to self tune their naturally aspirated Audi as a hobby, have at it and have fun. However I will bet as many Cokes as you want that you won’t match what JHM has already done. Ever. It’s not like they’re charging $2000 for a tune. It’s $500…and your tools will cost you that, not to mention your time, effort, aggravation, and that’s all to be slower.

I e-mailed APR and asked them for a dyno and they informed me it was unfortunately “lost” during their “move” … LMFAO

I think the rule in AZ is if the box doesn’t say fits “xxx” car, it will never work.

Speaking of which, I just put the AFE Pro Dry S in and if the Germans are so “smart”, who is the idiot that put that lower bottom airbox lid clip in that particular location? :frowning:

LOL. Right up there with “the dog ate my homework”

I bet privately APR would recommend you went to CountVohn for a tune. There’s no one who knows more about tuning 4.2’s. The other 4.2 A6 expert would be beem. My impression of n e f is lots of stolen/hacked/“derived” tunes and not a lot of speed. If you want to have fun self tuning, have a look at something like megasquirt or 034efi. If you just want a lot more out of your engine for little, look no further than CV.

APR is great… little known fact. When APR wanted a littel help they contacted the tuner for JHM… So would I the JHM tubner works for SVT… APR even said on line in the 4.2 S4 forum if you have a 91 oct S4 get a jHM tune… this was someone at APR saying this…This isn’t to say APR isn’t great…there the best…APR works with only a small few and they look for the best…

Welcom to AR F AZ F those that don’t know. AZ is a buntch of people trying to sell you something or sell you on an idea we call it vendor zine…where even the members are trying to sell you something…

JHM is just one of the great ocmpamnys that is on AR… for the 4.2 they would be your best friend… So will most of the guys on here. post a new post on what you wanted to do. You will get real help and ideas from us.
