NIGHT AT THE TRACK. SURPRISING RESULTS!!!

Last night air was pretty good so i decided to go to the local track where i live called Quaker City in salem ohio.

Last time i ran the car before that was at Summit Motorsports Park in Norwalk Ohio at DSM shoot out in august. That day recorded a personal best 12.15@115 mph on Apr Stg2 race tune at a DA of 2500. My 60 foot time in norwalk was 1.84. I Launched the with all traction/stability turned off and car on MANUAL MODE, but let the car shift through gears.

Last night DA was around 961 so i was very excited to see the difference. WHAT A SHOCKER!!

My best was 12.227@110.89 mph Car consistently did 12.2s. And on top of that My 60 foot time was 1.78.

There was no set up changes regarding my car. I ran the same race gas Gulf Mach 115. Same tires wheels. Same launching method smash and go. Only difference was i dropped the tire pressures to 36 because i figured it was pretty cool may need traction. And Launched the car with all traction/stability off but with SPORT MODE.

Here are my questions:
Is it possible that there is a difference in shift speed between dynamic manual mode and dynamic sport mode.

How come my 60 foot time was better but the car went slower on a much better DA.

Can it be the track it self being slower than Norwalk. People that run both tracks say Norwalk is a quicker track, how can that be!!

Here is 2 runs side by side for comparison purposes.

SUMMIT DA 2500 QUAKER DA 965

  115.48 mph 110.89

looks like your car was quicker but ran out of steam for some reason, the DA was lower, but how was the temperature differences? Maybe timing got pulled when the car got too hot near the end of the run?

were all of your traps consistant too

You lost 5mph…that is a lot

did you put on any weight recently?
dirty air filter? ???

I’m sure the experts around here will ask for VAGCOM logs, then they can tell you what’s going on.

Temp was 51 last night and 80s back in august. At summit car would be in 4th and carry 4th for another second before the finish. Here last night it upshifted to 4th right before i passed the finish line. Car feels fine and strong no indication of lacking top end to me. NO engine check lights never did anyway. Can the track be slightly uphill?

Yes all were around 110mph. They say if your 60 foot gets better your trap comes down but i dont know by how much. 5 seems a lot. But then everyone i talk to that run both tracks they claim Quaker always traps less than summit.

HAHAHA No i am 175lbs pretty fit guy, and missed dinner for this event just got out of tennis practice with high school kids. Ate one lousy protein bar!!

I dont use air filter at the track.

I’m pretty sure the manual mode short-shifts as compared to sport mode.

I think the difference in shift point relative to the finish line between your two trips was due to your reduced trap speed the second time. The short-shifting from 1-2 and 2-3 is probably robbing you of some top end HP.

You can see the theoretical differences in the short shifting thread Jim and myself worked on. Although this was to show the difference between shifting at 6300 vs 7200. There are obviously more variables at play for your run and what we did was just to give a frame of reference.

Drob my car does not short shift in any mode. It hits the redline 7000+ and shifts. I googled is quaker city dragway uphill, and found this response on yellowbullet.com. The guy says last couple hundred feet is uphill, and you will trap and ET slower. May be its the track

Just telling you what I’ve read about the B8 and DSG behavior. Ron or Jeff can probably give you a better idea, but my understanding is all guys running top times put the trans in ‘S’ mode.

Every B8 DSG I have seen will short shift 1-2 and 2-3 at around 6800rpm if left in manual mode, except cars with a GIAC DSG tune.

Remember that 6800 is considered short shift but barely noticeable unless you are really paying attention on the tach.

Not nearly enough to account for 5mph though.

So let me get this straight the car shifts it self at the same spot regardless of the mode Manual or sport. Did i get this right??

I used sport mode because in sport mode the car never hung up 1-2 gear. In manual it does it 50 percent of the time, and i was sick of wasting my runs.

Another website also mentions track being uphill right before 1000 feet marker. There is definitely track variable here.

Yes - the short shifting in manual mode has been a well-documented issue on the forums. You should be able to find several threads on it pretty easily.

There’s no need for you to be in manual mode at the track. Keep it in Auto and in dynamic on the sport diff.

Also, are you sure you switched to the race file?

strange.

the 1/8 time you posted above was on pace for around 12.16 @ 114.6

Don’t over think it. Go to the other track.

Yes from now on i will be on sport mode. It eliminates 1-2 hung up.

I am 100 percent sure i was on race gas map because before i was completely empty i ran my car on 93 pump map on shell 93. I drove the car 29 miles after it showed zero miles to empty and dumped the race gas and switched the map. And by the way it did 12.50 on pump gas at 109 mph.

Saki you are right. More i research it seems like for some reason this track is uphill before 1000 feet. Many websites i ran into people tell this. I am gonna try to go to thompson sunday or next wednesday to see the difference.
