Noob questions - Excited about the JHM 3.0 tun

Hey guys,

First and foremost, I apologize in advance if this topic seems ignorant; I am new to the Euro scene and just want to know a little bit more about how this works. I am through with JDM!

Ok so,

  1. The JHM 3.0 b6 tune is in beta testing correct? Will it be worth the money? (yes or no answer).
  2. What else is a necessity for making my 3.0 faster? It is completely stock. (Exhaust? TCU? Will just the ECU tune be enough?) I want to know before I buy anything. I dont want to buy on impulse anymore.
  3. How much do you predict the tune being? How hard would it be to install/will JHM have to install it?
  4. Sorry again for being an idiot.

Thanks!

Welcome to AR

Ok to answer your questions.
1 yes the tune is still in beta testing at the moment, and if you want to make the car more enjoyable it is the only tune you should get.
2 the tune will be fine if that’s all you want to spend, but if you want more grunt, then yes tcu tune, catless dp’s and exhaust is the way to go.
3 in terms of installation removing the ecu and tcu is fairly easy. To do that you need to remove your wipers and the cowling under the window (remove carefully or you will crack it) undo 6 screws and then unplug the computers and send them off. Email JHM to see if they are ready for your ecu/tcu. No idea on price yet.
4 no need to apologize, all here to help. Read as much as you can and ask questions if you are stuck.

I suggest you read most of the threads here or at least the 3.0 build and the 3.0 vs 1.8t stage 2 one and check out the videos that will make your mind up about the JHM mods. I would also suggest upgraded suspension would be a good way to go as well.

Hope this helps

Lmao I was typing a reply to this last night and fell asleep in the middle of it. Lout jr covered it all though

As far as ECU removal, on the cars after 02 there is a security box thing with rivets in it. you can either dremel slots into the rivets and unscrew them, or you can do what I did, get a large wrench and rip it out ;D

Never worry about asking questions. As many have already said this site is all for asking questions. If you really don’t know then non of your questions are stupid.

1 YES!! I tested it and Its worth 2x what they are charging
2 Necessity is how you look at it. Ill make a list on this below First and foremost the ECU tune from JHM
3 450-500$ and its worth twice that
4 you would have been an idiot if you didn’t ask and made assumptions. You made a thread and now your getting your answers.

My A4 is manual - should I expect BETTER performance results from the tune? Or should I look into a TCU? Maybe just a short shifter?

Results will more then likely be better with a manual trans once you get clutch+ flywheel it will increase even more. You only get a TCU tune with auto transmissions. JHM short shifter is your best bet for better and more precise shifts under race conditions.

Awesome! Thanks guys!

Also, do you guys know what exhaust has the most “throaty” sound? Like literally NO TWAANNNNGG. Only Vroouuuuuumm. Haha.

great Idea starting a thread for this question. I posted my answer in there.

The manual cars will get more performance out of the JHM tune due to the fact there isn’t going to be the parasitic loss from the transmission. With that more power will make its way to the pavement. This is a good thing.

JHM exhaust systems (Fast Intentions) have a really good sound to the v8 systems and since the b6 a4 has the same body as the b6 s4, I believe the exhaust are very close to being interchangable minus the connection at the downpipes. I’d go with that because the quality is great, and im sure the sound will be as well. If you go catless I highly recommend resonators.

To answer a few more of your questions.

The manual cars have a much better down low. IE. 2000-3400 where the Autobots get hung up on the converter. So you should see a nice bump down there. The Autobots see good results down there as well but the Manual cars will have a advantage.

Throaty sound. VERY VERY hard on a V6 to get rid of the Twaannnngg. I would hold off on getting anyting just yet. lets see if we as a comunity can start getting sound clips and working in the direction of getting a little more low tone out of the car.

How can I get the JHM tune? I emailed them from the website but have not heard anything back.

They are probably quite busy, if you dont hear anything in a couple days send another message. Basically you just ship them your ECU, they tune it and send it back with minimal turnaround time

I would E mail them at the V8@jhmotorsports.com addy that always works for me.

Hey guys, just emailed them and waiting for a reply. I gotta say it’s exciting to see so many people excited about the 3.0l AND the fact that I have a 6 speed manual and will get an even better result from this tune is SWEET!!! Do you guys know hp/tq values after the tune? I love this site, great work creators.

I’m not sure if the ECU is one of those mods that can be seen in #'s but don’t quote me on that. I do know some of the best mods you can give a car won’t show #'s like LW rotors, wheels and things of that nature.

The ecu undeniably gives a noticeable hp/tq boost. However JHM doesn’t believe in dyno tuning and would rather prove themselves in real world performance. I’ll dyno mine once I have a full exhaust on it, the guys doing the exhaust have a dyno so why not :stuck_out_tongue:

There’s a dyno day around where I live coming up so I’ll go get it done once I have the ECU. If JHM doesn’t mind I’ll post the numbers here.

edit: I just found out my my wheels will be in Monday(about 3 weeks sooner than expected)… super fucking stoked

I don’t think they’ll have any problem with you posting a dyno number. I believe they themselves avoid dyno sheets because they don’t want to sell products based on dyno gains. LW parts (rotors, flywheels, crank pulley) can all speed the car up without affecting the power output to a dyno. Additionally selling parts based on dyno sheets results in overblown unrealistic numbers being artificially produced on the dyno.

Thanks for the corrections guys, I gotta get out of the hp/tq mindset. Still waiting for a reply back, but if I buy this tune now, then later when they put the jhm supercharger out I’m guessing there will be another tune for that. Any thoughts?

If you go with the tune now and go with the SC later the re-tune will be free.
