O2 Sensor Brand

Hi Guys -
Long story short, Bank 2, upstream 02 sensor threw a code. Audi dealership gave me Part #: 1K0998262AA

Part number matches a Bosch sensor at Rock auto for $70 or so and ordered 2 (might as well do both for preventative maintenece).

I started a thread on AZ, but I wanted to get some of your guys’ opinions as well. A member on AZ is saying he had issues when installing this bosch sensor, citing misfires and rapidly changing fuel trim. Is it actually different than the part the dealership would use, or just branding?

Here is the original thread…
http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php/604168-02-Sensor-Replacement

Has anybody heard of running into these issues? I have a 2,000 mile road trip coming up so I obviously want the RS4 in top shape. Thanks ahead of time for the help!

If you put this part # (1K0998262AA) into rock auto, it has 2 matches…both are not anywhere close to $70, one is $156 and one is $191.

Your not going to find primary O2s for much less than that.

ECS has them for $205 a piece.
Europapart $139 http://www.europaparts.com/oxygen-sensor-1k0998262aa.html

If these are universal or generic O2 sensors you will need to cut the wires and splice or solder them in. That is something I wouldn’t be comfortable doing unless I was a highly trained electrician with appropriate soldering equipment. I am and have the equipment but I personally would just buy a direct fit sensor because the Primary (upstream) O2s are very important.

I don’t understand why if you search Bosch 17363 how the price varies from $70 to $190?
This would worry me that someone decided to cross reference part numbers that aren’t exactly interchangeable.
Use the exact part number they gave you (1K0998262AA), it should be plug and play. I have a feeling if you just buy a Bosch 17363 you may find out it isn’t a direct swap and needs soldered or doesn’t work correctly.

I would ask first what was the code? That should help give some idea on what we are working with.

I can’t see an auto store giving you 02s that you have to splice together. You definitely don’t want to do that, if you get the wires wrong you will blow your ECU.

Getting two 02s is a great idea. You never want to change just one, they all age about the same. I don’t have any experience with the sensor you’re talking about. Could the sensor cause issues with misfires and fuel trim issues? Yes, I would check your current fuel trim readings and after switching to the new 02s checking to see if they are much further out of range. Without knowing the functions of the sensors you got, it’s going to be a try and see situation. Some part stores have a “close enough” parts policy where its not the oem part but its “close enough” It all depends on their idea of interchangeability.

I usually just go to ECS tuning and grab the manufacture part number from their website, then buy them on Amazon. When I did them on the S4, I did Bosch all around. I would bet a coke(that still a thing, saki?) that the OEM sensor is made by Bosch

Thanks for the replies.

I guess since I already ordered those o2 sensors, I’ll wait and see if they’re meant to be soldered in or not. If so, I’ll return them for the correct part.

The part on europarts shows the Bosch part number, which matches the part I bought.

I can’t remember the specific code it threw to begin with (I know, not very helpful). The dealership didn’t have the specific code in their notes, only the part number.

Got my O2 sensors today. Do they match what you guys have successfully used?

I don’t think the difference will be visual. Does the plug fit the OEM connector? just curious

I’m not sure yet. I was hoping somebody that’s done the job could tell me.

If you received a bosch 17363 for an Upstream wideband sensor. I’d use it. I went the bosch site and looked up sensors for 2008 RS4 and Bosch lists this one for upstream cylinders 1-4, but I suspect it’s the same as bank two. My Napa software claims that Bosch is the OE supplier for this model.
Most likely, when you remove the old one/original one, you’ll see a VW/audi part number and a bosch number.

If you would like to confirm it, you can contact Bosch tech @ 800-521-5462. If they want to talk to a jobber level person, tell them you are from Napa jobber 361 out of the Sacramento Distribution center. They will call you back and verify your application with an O2/wide band sensor rep.

I also checked pricing. My cost is
$96.75 thru imcparts.net
$87.92 thru my Napa Distribution center. I can get another 10% off when I order in bulk direct from Bosch.
$70. is an exceptional price for a Bosch 17363. I sell it to installers/shops for $109.99
If you need additional help you can PM me and I can try to be of assistance.
NGK/NTK, Bosch, and Denso manufacture most if not all Oxygen/Wide Band sensors for OE manufacturers. Denso and Bosch trade product, sometimes a Bosch product will be inside a Denso box. some automotive manufacturers use one brand of sensor for the upstream, and a different O2 sensor manufacturer for the downstream.

Thanks for all the info! Much appreciated. I’m going to give it a shot this weekend and replace both of them. If Bank 1 (currently no issues) acts up after the replacement, then I’ll get the OE part. I’ll be sure to update when I do.

Good idea on just swapping out the one. From the looks of the connector it looks like it should plug in.

Hey Guys -

I wanted to update this thread for others. The primary o2 sensors have been replaced by Bosch Part number 17363 o2 sensors and are working great. After talking to an ex-audi tech, he informed me they are indeed the correct parts for the RS4. Audi uses different part numbers for the Bank 1/2 primary sensors and he explained to me it’s only to account for the different length wires they use. The o2 sensor itself is the same piece.

In the midst of taking the downpipes off originally to change the 1 o2 sensor, 4 of the 6 studs snapped taking them off (Michigan car so I’m sure it’s seen its fair share of salt). Lucklily I was doing the work at my friend’s shop and he was able to fabricate cat-less downpipes for me. They turned out great and sound awesome. We left the rest of the exhaust stock for now.

Here’s some pics of how they turned out.

nice one. Post up a sound clip.

Great info, thank you!

They look great

Yay for RS4 O2 Sensors: http://jhmotorsports.com/shop/catalog/advanced_search_result.php?keywords=rs4+o2+sensor&x=0&y=0

I’ll get a sound clip sometime with a decent mic and post it.

Here is the link to the o2 sensor I’m running, costing less than 25% of what my dealership quoted me ($300 for the OEM part)
http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinfo.php?pk=3559644

Hopefully it will help save some others some money if they’re doing it themself. The longer wire provided with these will work for the primary sensors on either bank.

When I installed my JHM DPs and catback I was getting codes for both sensors on Bank 1/Driver side. I ended up going to Denso route as well. They fit well and work fine, but unfortunately I still get occasional codes on one of the sensors. I ordered them from Partsgeek:

http://www.partsgeek.com/catalog/2007/audi/rs4/fuel_injection/oxygen_sensor.html?brand=denso

Part Numbers: 234-4832 & 234-4849

Bank 1 is passenger side. So it could be that lol.

Woops, I meant Bank 2, had to look at the code again.
