P0087 Error Code

Well, I just changed my transmission fluid and feeling good headed out - in sport mode of course. Motor is really feeling good and shifts are excellent. After a bit of driving, dropped the pedal to edge my way past an m5 and suddenly - loss of power, engine light and eps. I’ve seen this before. Just before I had the fuel pumps and rail replaced under warranty, but why, again? Ack.

I need to check if the fuel pump sensors were replaced in the last work, but I assume they were since the pumps and rail are new. I do need to do VC gaskets, but they’re not terrible. Also plan to clean the TB’s, but they shouldn’t be that bad. Also need to check when the fuel filter was replaced. Thinking I could take the TB’s off and inspect for kinks/etc. This is nearly identical to what happened before when the pumps were replaced - however then there was a leak and strong gas odor. My codes are below. Pulled these, cleared - was hopeful they would say gone since I’m not pushing it in sport mode, but unfortunately they’re back under conservative driving in D. Cold start is a little rough, but smooths out nicely once warmed up - attributing this to VC’s maybe leaking into plugs, but haven’t verified. Cam followers? Any suggestions greatly appreciated. Cheers and happy Friday!

Have you ever had the fuel injectors serviced and/or a carbon clean done? I think that the injectors cause the high pressure pumps to go bad from not flowing correctly due to carbon buildup.

This doesn’t sound like a sensor problem but rather a fuel flow problem. If a sensor wasn’t reading right then usually there wouldn’t be such a hard fuel cut like that killing power and tripping the idiot lights. It would just trip the lights and run slightly worse than it should.

The camshaft followers are the roller style like the FSI V8s. Only really the 2.0T FSI belt engine had a problem with the camshaft follower because it used a flat tappet style camshaft follower.

Did you scan 11-engine electronics 2 as well?

Thanks so much for the reply. Carbon clean has been done along with a new manifold by the dealer previous owner relatively late mileage. There were a few electrical oddities, including sunlight sensor and alarm, both of which seem to be working fine now. Repaired a found broken and shorted wire leading to the hood release and the hood stopped releasing. Works fine again after manually releasing (that was interesting but ended very well without a scratch).

Injectors are on the maintenance list, but you have an interesting point. Considering dealer service I hope they would would done the fuel filter. Are there other common ways of contaminating the fuel system? My experience has been if an injector starts to go you can swap the bad one by trial and error correcting the idle once found even if no code. Are the pumps not pumping fuel TO the injector? How could a dirty injector plug a pump. Thanks again. All codes below.

I highly doubt that the fuel filter has been changed under warranty unless it was specifically stated. There isn’t any gasoline fuel filter replacement interval that I am aware of because Audi states that they are “lifetime”. Which means they are good until you can prove that they are bad to be replaced under warranty.

These FSI/direct fuel injection fuel injectors have been having issues with sticking open or closed. I largely think that it is caused by carbon buildup getting in there and causing the solenoid to not open/close correctly. The injectors not flowing correctly leads to the high pressure pumps either having to work harder and wear out faster to keep the correct amount of high side fuel pressure built up or the opposite problem of too high of fuel pressure and then the bleed off valves inside the high pressure fuel pumps stick open. Yes if you have one bad injector then you can swap it to diagnose the issue by seeing if the problem follows the suspected bad injector. However from my experience with getting these FSI injectors serviced by companies like Race City Injector is that most all the injectors are not flowing correctly after anything from 30 to 40 thousand miles.

Thanks for sharing all the codes.

Jimmy what would you advise then… Injector servicing every 25,000 miles? Or new ones every 50k or something?

Injector servicing and carbon clean every 30-40K miles for basically all the NA FSI engines. That seems to be a happy medium mileage amount between wasting money for doing it too often and causing issues from waiting too long.

I wouldn’t replace the injectors unless they can’t be serviced and cleaned enough to bring back close enough to normal flow rates. However time restraints might make it worth it to have a second set of injectors so that they can swap out for certain people.

It just doesn’t make sense to do either injector servicing or a carbon clean. They both should be done at the same time to save on labor and make life easier.

Great post jimmy Im trying to get CV to make his post he has in the works about this. The V10 cars see a real high failure rate. If you search every build thread you will see everyone in the V10 community has replaced at least one injector.

If you search you see the S5 guys also have the same issues and from what I have seen looking at ETKA the S5 injectors are the same as the S6 injectors. We have seen tons of RS4 threads where guys are cleaning there injectors and gettting big losses from the injector rate to where the rate is suposed to be.

Great information guys. I replaced the low pressure fuel sensor on Saturday and ran through two containers of Teckron since. Running much better, smoother at cold start as well. I still can get the esp and engine to come back under heavy load in sport mode so not fixed. Seems that fuel filter and pumps come next. Can the pumps be rebuilt easily? Looking forward to getting under the manifold, but not in a hurry. It is shiny new. So I guess I should get use to it - doing the carbon clean myself that is. I’m sure the first time is the worse, but I could glean a bit if satisfaction from cleaning out the v10. I’ll be sure to stay in sport mode all the time to avoid an under revved motor

If its the fuel code again. I would be careful until you have that sorted out. Running out of fuel is a bad thing.

As for the rebuild on the pumps I dont think anyone has stock rebuilds but if you check I know JHM has rebuild kits for some of there other HPFP units. The only down side there is that those rebuilds would be a high flow upgrade. I dont know if that would require some sort of tune adjustments.

Not to sure if its the pumps as its a rail code if im understanding it correctly the fuel at the rail is low that should be right before the HPFP. So if thats the case you would want to check with the filter and then the LPFP

I really need to get a vag com since it’s a bit of a wait for me to get one from a friend. I cannot confirm the code until then, but excellent point to focus on the low pressure side first if it is indeed the same code. Will let you know.

Well, the vag com will be here Wednesday. I did get the hex-can ‘old’ version although it was hidden on the ross tech site. All of the new units are locked down now to number of vin per cable.

While I wait I’ve been letting the car sit and not really taking it out of the garage. However, last night I did really step on it against any common sense. The engine and esp are constant now and the idle is really not happy; chugging at idle but tightening up and sounding like normal limp mode when moving. I might even think an injector is gone, but not feeling it while moving that I can tell. There is a noise from the y-shaped housing leading to both TB’s. It’s similar to a constant light scraping noise. If I pinch the left side rubber hose the noise stops. Seems odd. Anyway, looking forward to the vag com arriving. Could this have to do with the plastic flaps I’ve heard about?

Does anyone have experience with this y-shaped housing noise? Can post a pic of the house I pinching if helpful. Thanks again for the all the input.

Did the fuel filter on Sunday and still seeing esp and cel along with a rough idle. So, check the fuel pump and then move to inspecting coil packs? Wednesday is so far away

VAG arrived today. This is what I’ve got.
Since I’m not seeing any misfires (and after a little searching) the idea of the fuel pump module being bad came up. Any suggestions? Fuel filter replaced and low pressure fuel sensor replaced so far. Much appreciated as always.

Interesting, I thought that the V10s give faults up to bank 3 and 4 because of the exhaust being divided up into so many sections with a bunch of oxygen sensors.

If you could please log measuring value block channels 103, 106, and 140 at idle and then taking off hard at WOT from a stop until the top of second gear. I would do that on a flat portion of the highway when there is little traffic. So pull over and then haul ass when it is safe to do so. That way you likely are still below the highest local highway speed limit. I live in the Nazi police state called the Commonwealth of Virginia so I think about things like that because the idea of going to jail for reckless driving doesn’t appeal to me.

You may have to switch between the different modules to get all of those channels because Audi mixed them up on certain dual ECU engines. In that case it would be great if you could also show channel 3 so we can see engine rpms, throttle position, and mass air flow readings.

Wasn’t able to do the road test last night - hopefully by morning. She is really going to be sad when I stomp on the gas. Guessing won’t get above 3k rpm. Have a great weekend.

Well, I have some numbers. The specified rail pressure is much higher than the actual. The graph for the stop to full acceleration is attached. I also attached the csv for idle. There is a little hesitation when starting now; 2-3 seconds before it actually turns over, even when warm. I couldn’t capture the speed and rpms, but the stop to full accel test didn’t get past 2nd gear and I didn’t want to push any more above 5k. No power.

Having trouble with upload so I put a zip here: http://2ligh324ghu.s3-website-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/fuel-rail-tests-graph.zip

Seems like HPFP from what I can dig up. Just not sure how to test which one it may be or do I need to replace both? :-\
