Possibility to make 500whp without having to do bottom end. b6/b7 s4

I know 500ish whp is pretty much the limit for our v8s. Only mod i have left really to do is jhm blower or headers but im leaning torwards blower sometime next year maybe two years from now.
I was thinking if i were to have the jhm built heads with new piston rings +plus fresh timing gear w/updated metal guide would it be capable of running 500whp without a worry about blowing up. When i read how motors were being blown past that limit i wondered if worn valve seals couldve been culprits in the testings. What if they are falling apart and getting in the way of components. It was something thats always been on my mind

You need to worry about the rods at the tapered end by the piston, the wrist pin, the piston itself, and the cylinder walls. The stage 1 JHM SC and all supporting mods is at the limit of what is safe. JHM went through four engines to finally dial it back enough to be safe for the internals.

I can’t wait to run my S4 with the JHM rebuilt cylinder heads, refreshed timing components, version 2 headers, and other mods.

Just out of curiosity why specifically 500whp is your goal? Or are you just looking to max out output without having to sleeve the block. Basically more than what regular Stage 1 cars run, but yet still under the limit of exploding.

When i first bought my car it was a completely stock b6. Pulled hard enough for me to not want to buy another s4 due to how clean and strong it was.(story with this car) .at the time i just wanted to be in the 300whp club and build it to be a full bolt on b6 s4. I have a hunch that i had/have one of the healthier s4s on the whpower side of things. Only power mod i have left is blower or headers; But I’m leaning torward getting a blower though within the next year. I was sold after i went for a ride in an s4 that had everything except headers .but if i do it i want to do the heads too for some odd reason. Ive raced cars claiming 320whp and walked them . Let a buddy who owned a stg3 b5 s4 drive it and he swore up and down that the car had to be over 300 to the wheels or close to it with just the tune, full exhaust, snub & 034 engine mounts. I didnt want to build my hopes up but the car is fast. Even if i wasnt im sure ill def be well over my original goal. I know the limits have been tested to pretty much 500whp. But my thing is “what if they could”. I always wondered if valve seals wear out and get between pistons and cause damage, what if the motors jhm tested were all old engines with worn seals. If that were the case i wondered if having the built heads and replacing piston rings would allow you to handle 500whp more reliably. Id like to be around 500whp in the future and i feel if i did blower, headers and built heads id be close to it.

If you have one of the healthier all motor cars…get to the dragstrip and put up some good NA times. Don’t worry about WHP numbers, go see if the car actually accelerates.

No one has done anything exciting in years

Nasty whp numbers and goals are one of those things it can be easy to get wrapped up in.

The biggest issue with whp is each dyno will give you a different number so there’s no real standard. Stock s4 dyno readings go from 256 to 305 whp. So even if you put a ton of parts on it would be difficult to gauge exactly what the hp is. We all kinda know based off most averages that xx parts are about xx hp. This is why so many of us shifted to 1/4 mile. Because is always a 1/4 mile.

But I understand the want for a hp number. We all have our own thoughts on what xx hp means to us. So we set that as a goal. Hp wise adding the jhm supercharger and headers will add a healthy amount of hp. The average numbers we see are in the 430-450 whp range. As I said keep in mind you might see more hp on different dynos.

The one thing we know is that the hp limits of the s4 are from the rods. They start to bend with too much hp. Check the tech section CV posted about what happens to our rods with too much hp. It might be good to look at that.

couldnt agree with you more, nobody posts any exciting videos anymore. I def plan to hit up the track. Once shes on the road.

from what I recall, 500 whp is a no go (for long)

JHM had a couple of times their nitrous car and SC car hitting around 500 whp. Of course the motor disintegrated eventually but apparently it was a fun ride.

400 is comfortable, and frankly a fuckload of power.
425 or so is where you should see the car with full exhaust and proper supporting mods.
If you see 450 whp you will likely have headers, be in excellent DA and be pretty lucky because the JHM SC tune is closing the throttle towards top end to keep it safe.
If you see 475 whp, your car won’t last long on a stock block and you will wonder why you weren’t happy with 425.

I think id be happy with 430-450whp.id like to have an 11 sec car some day but i have to hit 12s first lol

I think off the top of my head there are only a few 12 second all motor B67 S4s

I’m the slowest, barely there at 12.995@107

there is also JHM’s shop car is the fastest at 12.70

In between in order of achieving 12s are I believe JHM, cabracco85, justincredible, a guy from Carolina, Euroswagr…and I think that’s it. Short list!

Slight derailment, but does anybody have cabracco85s info from the all stock run? I searched but couldn’t find it in the 1/4mile thread and since we can’t search by username I’m stuck.

Well Axel- dynoed 421whp/350tq on a dynojet with trexturks dps.

it was before the site existed so you won’t find anything

what do you want to know? He’s an excellent driver and lives in the Illinois area so he often ran in excellent DA similar to the Atco/Cayuga/Sparta/Englishtown guys.

he went 13.4 @ 102, same as I believe MotorTrend went when they tested the B6.

bangoman went 13.8@102 the day I went 12.99@107

Do you know which track he was on and the DA? It’s quite impressive as he has the fastest stock time.

It’s good I don’t think it’s earth shattering to be honest. Bangoman’s 13.8 @ 102 could easily have been a 13.4-13.5@102 with Kenny (cabracco) driving. He launched it hundreds of times and used to race for money. Great 60’ and 3 powershifts = 2-3 tenths vs. a 1.95 60’ and normal shifts.

As for what track, one of the ones near Chicago. Clochner or someone might know what they’re called. Great Lakes I think.

Here’s the motor trend test. Same time, better MPH likely because of how they do the test (terminal MPH vs. trap average)

It’s good to practice and get into the 12’s first. You can totally do that with the Jhm tune full 2.5 exhaust the jhm LW clutch and intake manifold.

And as for more dyno figure and keep in mind this isn’t always the same due to different dynos giving different numbers

Jason at jhm got 440 axel got 421 and a guy in Mexico got 422whp

Great Lakes Dragaway is in Kenosha, Wisconsin (little over an hour north of Chicago). That’s the one I’ve always gone to. Other Chicago options are Route 66 Raceway and Byron Dragway.

yeah cabracco was a killer driver. had some tricks once the car it was all modded too

Can one of you OG drag racers give some tips on making a good run with the B6 S4? I am wrapping up the last of my parts install and going to give it a go in two weeks at a nearby track.

I have only ever had experience with my old 24v GTI lol

First thread…

Additionally, for the B6/7 S4, I think launching around 3k RPMs is preferred.
