Power steering pump

So all was well until I went into a car wash. After my wash I could barely turn the wheels. It is super hard to turn them just sitting still and a little easier to do it while moving. How do I know that it is the pump fur sure?

Where is the pump and where is the reservoir in a 07 s8?

Thanks for the help

Update: a nice big puddle by the driver side front tire. So is this the reservoir? How hard is this going to be?

Thanks for countvon on this one

Looks like the front bumper and head light need to come out. But replacement of the pump that is going to be a lot harder. I cant see it being the pump being bad. It probably is just a swelled return line. That is a very common issue on the S4s

Nice thank you. Any idea on how hard it is going to be to replace the lines? Do I just order the 2 so they are both new?

How much fluid do I need to get?

How comfortable are you wth a wrench and how small are your hands. Both help on German cars lol. I’m just generalizing as I’ve never had that done or help get t done though. That said like Justin I haven’t heard of the PS pump frequently going on one of these but doesn’t mean it hasn’t happened.

Also, how much power steering fluid is there left or how much came out on the ground? Have you checked? I imagine it may have been low then you got a kink or other issue in the line or a fitting resulting in your current situation.

Imo, if you ever get in there to repair something and you need to mess with lines / fittings or just because and miles are up there I would replace if you are confident in your ability. And the repair includes repairing or replacing something near there.

All these lines, fittings, etc take a beating over the years especially in varying temperatures and tough climates. And unfortunately these are the items that VAG + Porsche and BMW etc. tend to cheap out on (lowest bidder with decent design) to make a profit.

Oh after I parked the car there was a big puddle. I’m guessing most of it came out.
I’m comfortable with a wrench and have done various jobs on the car. I’m assuming if the pump went out that there would be anything leaking. I just couldn’t steer.

I’m trying to figure out what I need as fast as hoses go. GAP shows a return, a feed and a suction hose.

I’m hoping I can figure out whay I need and get her back up.

I looked and looked. I can’t see where it leaked from and from my vantage point I gave up.
Dropped it off att the shop and will know by tomorrow the damage. They did say that the lines are a big job to do…

Update: they found the return line is leaking. $180 part no one in town has 1 so 3 days till that comes in. Then 8-10 hr job if they can wiggle around and not drop the engine. 16-20 if they have to drop the engine.

If the engine comes out whay else should I replace while it’s out?

Its a pain but they should be able to get the return line without pulling the motor. If the motor has to come out let us know.

Well they were able to do it without pulling the engine. Still 16 hrs of labor. But its fixed and running

Well the bright light is it was 16 hours of labor and not 30 for a full motor pull

Yeah, this is something I am going to have to take a gander at eventually no leaks but some seriously whining when its really cold out.

I had some BAD whining in my power steering for a couple weeks, I had expected it to be some sort of major problem. Someone in the forums here suggested I simply top off the power steering fluid, which I did, and the problem has been fixed ever since. $20 and 5 minutes of work - might try that first.

The Cold power steering is obviously more viscus than warm so also think there may have been a chemical agent in the fluid that prevented it from congealing to and extent that it would cause it to be noisy when cold, and that has probably broken down. Although I don’t notice any difference it control other than I feel the slight vibration in the steering wheel until it warms up. And it has to be freezing. Or maybe some water got in the fluid. I’ll check it out. But toping it off would probably fix it one way or another worst case I buy new power steering fluid.
