I’m not in a rush, my car is actually down at USP getting new bushings for my JHM shifter and finally clear corner ecodes.
insane comments? from Tony?
If you do that it will be pretty funny. The reason nobody does that is because it’s damn expensive.
Of course you will probably have trouble getting JHM’s tuner to tune the competitor’s turbo. Jfonz might be more willing.
Yea to me its a little weird how he changes his mind all the time he doesnt care about 1/4 then of course we care…just test your products! Then he wants to put down every other tuner in the game. Sounds like a dirty business owner to me
well, everytime the quarter mile discussion comes up, Tony @ EPL spews out a bunch of anti-quarter mile propaganda. Usually about breaking cars, usually something snobby about the quarter mile, then usually something about ‘these cars weren’t made for the dragstrip, the roadcourse is where they shine’ yada yada. Yeah, everyone knows the recipe for a road course gem is a little V6 with a big turbo pair, and a 62:38 front weight bias. Brilliant.
When the conversation turns to the crowd embracing the quarter mile, he then jumps in with plan B…and rattles off a bunch of un-verified quarter mile results from EPL cars. When asked who owns the cars and for timeslips, he vanishes. I started a thread here asking for all the fast EPL cars. Tweetss4estate started a similar thread on audizine in B5. Guess how many times we got out of it to add to the database? 1. That’s it. Tony from EPL? He did his usual driveby random timeslip of an EPL car, devoid of details when asked, and when guys did a little digging, found there was a lot more he was not telling…i.e. that it was actually GIAC FUCKING TUNED!
It’s fucking sad.
Anyway, this thread is not about failures…this should be about progress for the B5.
The fact that we’re having a lot of trouble finding any progress since VAST went backwards and JHM focused on the V8 cars is pretty interesting. Where are all the ASP and EPL and AMD and AWE etc. accomplishments??? I really can’t wait because fanboys of those shops always are quick to call out anyone who supports JHM’s accomplishments. It would be nice to see ANYTHING worth supporting from those companies, other than dyno results.
Yes, Tony’s comments are insane.
It’s a nominal expense based on the overall cost of parts and labor. You can have the best hardware in the world, if the tune sucks, inevitably the results will as well. For me, it’s a price I’m willing to pay and considering I’ve done and re-done most other aspects brakes/exhaust/suspension the tune is just another piece but a very important one.
“JHM focused on the V8 cars is pretty interesting.”
I would just counter that with the RS6R release. If I read their website correctly, they basically have an off the shelf full package/bolt on solution for your car to run 11’s at 12x.
The problem is that they’re 13yr old cars owned by 18yr olds (mostly, don’t be flamin’ yet) so they’re not getting their drivelines sorted and would rather save a few bucks and go RS6X and claim they’re the same thing.
ZeroT and S6Atron seem to have done it right. S6Atron has given us a decent timeslip. ZeroT’s is coming, maybe with jnaut at the helm. The yellow bus is a cool car for sure!
I have a jhm rs6r car. Asked dan at jhm a few weeks ago to keep me in the loop if they have any plans of heading to the strip. Have never been before and sure would like to put the the car through the paces.
Very few, if any, AZ members cared much for my posted logs. Whatever though. The car is fun to drive again and puts a smile on my face every time I drive it. A few minor surprises upon return from install but nothing serious.
They tried to go a few weeks ago, but it was closed when they got there. Despite clear skies, the track closed because it ‘might’ rain. GRRR!!!
Then it rained every weekend since. They did go once and were only able to run 1/8th mile but they buried the timeslips as they want to put some glory passes on in the full 1/4. Check this out though
My 420 hp RS4 trapped 108 MPH when I set the B7 stock 1/4 mile record at 12.75 @ 108
JHM’s RS6r car trapped 106 MPH…at the 1/8th!
What’d they trap at the 1/8 when they went 10.8 @ 130? Anyone know? When they went 11.1 @ 129 with K04 they trapped 99

And the b5 platform is dead
Yea i think its a clear sign that it isnt dead as long as one company is still putting out great products and testing and showing even the young guys they can do it and do it once right the first time. Just would like to see more of the “vendors”(advertisers on AZ) put out some stuff. The STK’s seem like they could be nice if you could find a medium between just making big power and actually being able to put it down the track
Nobody said it’s dead, let’s get that straight. I just think all the talk over the last couple of years has been empty. I haven’t really seen much in the B5 world that made me say wow. I used to be regularly freaked the fuck out by B5 performance though.
That trap speed is pretty solid for a car that had full interior, full exhaust and is literally a daily driven car in that setup (other than the octane of the fuel that goes in it and the tune of course).
Idk? Maybe the ceiling has been reached for the general masses. Without going all out crazy expensive builds, what is left? Already been said, this is a relatively cheap, old car now. It is still one hell of a fun and reasonably comfortable highway cruising sport sedan that was ahead of its time.
I mean take someone like me. As much as I aspire to be a DIYer, the simple fact is I am not. I spend hard earned money to have others work on my car. If I had more patience and knowledge it would be different. I could experiment with different setups a couple times a year. Throw rods, replace, upgrade, etc…but at the end of the day it is a 13+ year old car and frankly I am surprised that vendors still pay it any attention. But, there’s the rub. Even after 13 years there is still a strong following for this car and the market remains strong.
Some love the big dyno numbers and fats. Others love real world application on the track, but both are inherently dangerous with regard to longevity and breaking shit. So again I am left with a finicky broke car that I need to pay someone to fix. It seems most folks like to feel comfortable being told their car has the potential to run fast, but lack the gumption to go run it.
I think you’re spot on. Progress will continue but certainly not at the pace they once did between 2004-07. Technology and advancements in engineering will naturally occur but I think the days of being freaked out are numbered. Zero’s car, as I’ve told him, should be and will be something to look forward to. It’s a great car, extremely fun to drive, very capable performance wise yet still manage to be suited for almost anyone. I saw a 60 something year old lady driving one the other day and frankly it suited her well.
When my B7 was in the shop (fixing the JHM tune issue + brake pads) I drove my wagon every day for almost a month. I thought to myself, holy fuck, I’ve been driving the same car for 10 years! I purchased a used B5 sedan back in 2003 with 17k miles for 30k, kinda crazy to think I could buy 5 at today’s levels but 10 years will do that. My point, there will only be handful of individuals with the desire and patience to continue pushing this platform, others will move on to bigger and better things.
Happy2b, your logs would interest me if I knew what the hell I was looking at! Only joking man, I’m not a DIYer, wish I was! I do wash/detail my cars and the other weekend I successfully painted several interior pieces on the B5. I can assure you I won’t be doing any motor pulls any time soon!
I think you’re probably on to something… That a ceiling of sorts has been reached for reasonably normal folks. Although nobody is even getting close to that previously established ceiling lol. We could name the thread ‘regression for the b5’ when you think about it.
Benchmark quarter mile times from 2007-2008
Stage 2. 12.2 @ 114
Stage 3. 11.1 @ 129
Stage 3+. 10.6 @ 139
Nobody is even close to those numbers since then other than jhm and the rs6r.
If you’re going built its a big endeavor. I just don’t see myself ever doing something like that. In fact i was already faced wih that on the b7 s4 when I wanted to supercharge it…go built motor, or face a 425-450 whp ceiling to keep the stock internals safe. I bought an RS4 instead, which has forged internals from the factory. The B5 guys who go built motor are impressively patient. I think that would drive me daft waiting.
Meh, how about stagnation. Regression seems kinda harsh.
Sorry lol.
Actually there has been stagnation at stage two… I think jfonz was talking about getting close to it with an e85 car. Low twelve in the low teens. Pretty crazy on k03.
What can I say, we own two b5 s4’s. Silver avant tip (hers) and imola sedan 6mt (his). Two for the price of one…and a mkII Jetta gli to hone my DIY skills and confidence.
I love my b7 s4 and would only consider parting with it if I happened to find a very low mileage unmolested rs. I catch myself searching now and again…
Nice mix of his and her B5’s you have there!
Saki, have you driven a nice running stage 3 B5?
Just curious… the rs4 and a strong B5 are very different cars and very enjoyable in their own way, wasn’t sure if you had any time in the ol’ B5 to compare.
Solid thread. Ive been incredibly let down by the lack of advancements during my absence from the Audi community. Same song & dance. I thought that by now a clear path would have been more defined. All I see is younger owners bigger & headaches. The jhm acheivment is exciting. Just not sure I even want to dump a big chunk of cash on this car. The platform seems more toxic then fun
