Strange stuff, I suppose the B8 S4 is the same way
how much shorter length wise is the V6 in the S4 compared to the V8 S5?
Probably not much more than 3" because it uses an extra belt system up front (the V8’s only have the alt, the V6T has the blower on the inside and then PS/alt/AC on the outside)…
The mounting place for the transmission doesn’t change though, its still shoved way back in there. The wacky clutch/fw setup may be part of the reason the B8 S4 guys have seen slipping with just boltons

I have a free few minutes so I thought I would update the post. Were quite a bit further along then what you see here but with my tight schedule updates don’t come quick.
Back to the progress.
One of the biggest issues with the S5 is the clutch. Ive seen many company’s fail to really address the issue.

What lots of hot rod guys know is that, the more rotational mass you eliminate, the better your going to be when it comes to making good power and not having it used to over come the extra work load.
When you look at the success of flywheel upgrades in the past you see the formula that has worked for years. The stock Flywheel weight of say the B5 S4 is right around 25lbs. The stock weight of the S5 flywheel

right around the same at 24.5 it figures out to just over 25 when you include all the finial parts. Still the S5 flywheel as you can see is miles different then what your going to find on the older cars. With that being said it made sense to stick to what testing has shown for years on the 4.2 motors. Get the weight of the flywheel down to about 12lbs.
Due to the amount of money it takes to start a project like this and the fact that in the past other companys have done no research on making the little additions to the flywheel to cut down on chatter and beef up performance. The only way to make a solid product sometimes… Is to make it yourself.

The good thing about being close to lots of the domestic guys is that at any time we can stop by liberty transmission and Roush and get advice on things such as the clutch and flywheels. We have been working closely with these two companys for years and it really paid off in getting some inside information on how to make a better flywheel.

Due to the size of the unit compared to the other standard flywheels precision machine work and balancing goes into all the units.

At this point the results with the S5 motor and the lighter flywheel seem to be even more dramatic then what is seen in other cars with a lightweight flywheel.
With the lightweight flywheel done and having a large amount of weight removed from there. We are turning our attention to the front of the motor.
The S5 much like the B6/7 S4’s has a offset crank pulley. So a standard lightweight crank pulley isn’t possible. The crank pulley can only be made making sure to keep the stock offset weight to the pulley.
On the B6/7 S4 offset crank pulleys lots of the cost are in keeping the crank pulleys weight properly offset and to keep the tolerances of that weight exact. Looks like the S5 is going to take even more work then the B6/7 S4

Still with overall performance in mind and knowing how much the B6/7 S4’s gained from just a flywheel and crank pulley combo, the money has to get spent to see if its possible. So the crank pulley went out for testing. The issue is, you can’t just send out one crank pulley to get tested as there might be a swing in weights or each crank pulley might be balanced to each motor.
lucky for JHM that there is a list of guys ready to step up and see if they can get one of the first few sets of crank pulleys. So thanks to the interested S5 owners we were able to send off 6 crank pulleys. Now that testing has started we will see if this is even possible.

very exciting to see this progress! the s5 looks the part but its missing that raw nastiness to make it complete. the flywheel and crank pulley alone are really going to make these s5 guys smile.
yup the S5 just got a HUGE shot of ‘interesting’ as far as the power hungry enthusiast community goes (well…the informed ones anyway).
