Question for Sak, aka master of the 4.2 . . . (but anyone else pls chime in)

Thank you, looking forward to getting her out to the strip to try out the launch control. My early 2010 didn’t have it.

I don’t get all the torque talk from the B8 world.

The B7 RS4 makes at least 90% of its peak torque from 1500 rpm to 7000 rpm . It is an incredible engine and that torque range achievement was hailed as an engineering marvel. NOBODY complains about torque in the RS4.

The M3 which makes quite a bit less peak torque and way less across the curve would get jabbed for this but it is certainly not the same as the Audi.

Here is mistro’s stock dyno…making 250-288 WTQ for just about the entire curve. We all know the stock B8 makes about the same and a tuned B8 doesn’t really add much to low end torque…rather it just preserves it for the duration of the curve rather than seeing it fall off hard once boost bleed off kicked in over 5K on the stock file.

I think people need to drive these cars rather than reading magazines and extrapolating.

Sakimano said “As for your mods, sell them off on the forums. If you don’t have your exhaust, exchange with someone. i.e. ‘my APR exhaust for your stocker + $1300’ or something. Mods left on a car on trade in are like cash left in the glovebox…they give you nothing for them, so you may as well get them off (where possible)”

He’s right. I went to trade my S4 for a 2013. I actually got more for my trade taking off my AWE with downpipes removing the PSS10 coilovers. When I pick up the new ride Wednesday she’ll have on the AWE. The PSS10’s will go on it he spring or I’ll sell them privately. By looking stock now they can CPO my 2010 otherwise they couldn’t. Therefore a stock car at an Audi dealer will get you a better trade value. I considered the S5 but in the end I went for another S4. plus I already had winter tires and rims. The S4 is about $6,000 less when equipped like an S5. I love the look of the S5. The RS5 was very tempting. I sat in one for about an hour, just couldn’t pull the trigger.

I just noticed you grabbed a B8.5. Good to hear your CEL issues were handled!

What colour is it?

p.s. while I liked the front end of the B8, I really really like the front end of the facelift. A lot more menacing looking straight on.

Exactly what they told me when they replaced my mechatronics, they said there was a speed sensor failed (and that was causing the EPC to trigger, weird), and they had to replace the whole unit since it was integral.

I still get EPC codes once a week or so, when I make a lot of shifts in a short period of time or drive at higher RPMs for longer than a minute. It’s an unflashed ECU.

Jspazz - isn’t your S4 a 2011?

2010

that sounds kind of ghetto. Why can’t they fix it?

Oh Snap…

I really like the changes to the 2013. I too think the front end looks better. I don’t need to discuss the interior changes. We all agree it’s much better. I needed to unload the 2010 S4 due to gearbox malfunction which remains unresolved. I got a phantom black premium with black/red interior Stronic again with sports diff and heated rear seats. The new Stronic has a S setting which the 2010-2012 don’t have. This is a great setting on my 07 GTI. I drive the 99% in full manual so not a big deal, however, the wife will appreciate it One more day for my new ride…

did clochner order an RS5?

That is the why that it should be. The mechatronics should have all the sensors, valves, etc other small things to control the transmission. It makes the repair easier since they just replace the mechatronics and be done with it.

I thought when you put the ADS into dynamic then the D turns into S.

Got it…but still it was a (correct me if my SA was exaggerating) $4000 swap on the mechatronics, for one speed sensor, and 2-3 weeks wait. One sensor. Is a sensor on the transmission housing going to cost more than $4000 in (mostly) labour to swap? Sounds about even to me, just less work for the tech.

I think they were exaggerating. The mechatronics that I replaced were somewhere between $800 to $1500 depending on the car and then there was very little labor - like two and a half hours at most.

Now if you have to remove the trans and take it apart then your looking at the 15 to 20 hours of labor range (at $125 per hour that is between $1875 to $2500) plus probably a $400 to $600 sensor box and all the other stuff like bolts/nuts, fluid, gaskets, etc.

Of course this is all under warranty so the price goes up if the customer has to pay for it. So maybe the SA was trying to say how much it would cost if you had to pay for it.

Good to know, thanks…At least sounds a little more reasonable.

There are a lot of reasons to buy a RS5, it’s a great car and will certainly bring a smile to your face.

I hate to be the typical B8 guy and tout the torque but also don’t discount it. I don’t mean to sway anyone to either car but I’ll add my story since I have some experience with both motors (albeit the RS5 is improved). I owned a RS4 from 2007-2009 and it was the best car I had owned (which included a modern 911 and a ///M car).

I now own 2010 B8 S4 and holy hell, it’s the best car I’ve owned. I never felt the RS4 lacking for torque like others reported, but now that I have the extra torque I really like it. The car feels brutally fast and requires no wind up. Also I have to disagree with Sak who says a tune doesn’t add torque. I know you guys are not the biggest fans of dynos, but it does make the point. My dyno was done at 034 Motorsports who sells APR and my car is GIAC. From other pulls I’ve seen on this dyno my car is down about 20wtq compared to other cars and I still got 324wtq and making over 300wtq from 2800rpm-5800rpm.

But to answer the original posters question, drive one and decide which ones makes you happier.

Lol I just saw this. I dunno, you know who I talk to and at which dealer, and he says it’s nothing, just restart it, and when I told my wife to bring it in, he tried to pass it off as bad gas (which frustrated me a bit, she only fills Shell 91 from the station near me).

I think at this point he very much wants to see my car go far, far away.

Maybe time to go RS5…?? Hey what happened to our OP from the windy city?
