Quiet tires?

I’m going to need to replace my tires next month before a 2200 mile road trip, and was wondering if any of you have recommendations for a tire that will be quiet. I’m currently running Michelin PSS, and they are pretty noisy. I’ve heard good things about the Conti DWS 06 - have any of you tried them? I don’t track my car, so I don’t really need the ultra high performance of the Michelins, and would like to get longer tread life as well. I drive about 20k miles per year and the Michelins only lasted a bit more than a year.

I have Michelin PS AS3+ and they are quiet or at least they seem to be… I do have an exhaust though not 100% sure they’re perfectly quiet. Seems fine though. Before that I had the usual Conti Sport Contact 2 I think. Also seemed quiet.

I have the Michelin PS AS3+ as well and thus far they’re really good. Good traction, not noisy and a nice move from the Michelin PSS as, much to your point, I don’t track my car… YET.

Define noisy tires. Not everyone will have the definition of noisy tires and even some might include different noises from other components of the car to tire noise.

Kind of hard to define just what I find to be noisy. My wife has a 2012 A4 with smaller all season tires on it, and I can’t really hear much tire noise in her car. The PSS’s on mine rumble at a level that requires turning up the radio - especially on rougher pavement (and we have quite a bit of that around here). I have the stud less snows on it right now, and I think that they are actually a bit quieter than my summer tires. I just think that a large luxury performance sedan should sound more refined than mine does. I have deleted the rear resonators, and at steady speeds the tires drown out the exhaust. I can’t hear the exhaust unless I step on it.

According to Tire Rack, the PSSs are among the best all around, including noise, and better than the Continentals you reference:

My car came with the Pilot Sport A/S3, but I don’t hear an appreciable difference in noise level overall.

All of that said, PSSs do get noisier as they near the end of their useful life, like many tires do…

I had dws and they were noisy. Got these ones https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=BFGoodrich&tireModel=g-Force+COMP-2+A%2FS&partnum=735WR0GFC2ASXL&vehicleSearch=false&fromCompare1=yes
only drove 10k miles, but they are much quieter

I put my PSS summer tires back on the car last night. After making the drive to work this morning - I can confirm that they are much louder than my studless snows. The snow tires have a bit of a high pitched whine, which isn’t too objectionable, while the Michelin’s have a much louder rumbling type of noise (especially on rough pavement).

I did some reading on the BFG’s that were posted above and saw many comments about them being really loud.

Then I’d guess that your PSSs are near the end of their useful life. My Dunlope WinterSport 3D snow tires are clearly louder than my PSSs, though still not really loud per se…

I wouldn’t switch to the Contis expecting them to be quieter - I’ve mostly read the opposite - that they’re noisier than PSSs, and the test I referenced says the same thing.

If noise is the most important thing, then use Tire Rack’s survey results and pick the tire that receives the highest rating for noise, keeping in mind that when a tire is new to the market, it tends to receive higher ratings all the way around than once it’s been out for a while…

I should also add that Michelin has been pretty generous with my tire dealer and me when the noise levels go up - they’ve offered significant compensation/credit towards a new set of Michelins when I’ve brought it up…

In any event, my company has discounts through a certain tire site and if you use a promo code you can get 8% off a set of 4 tires. Let me know what you decide to do - we can compare prices and what not to make sure you’re getting the best deals.

When I bought my car in ‘14 it had conti dw on it. I thought they were great, not noisy at all. I got almost 40k miles, but they were totally blown. After I blew thru those I put on conti des 06. Love them, I don’t think they are noisy and I’m past 30k miles on them. Compared to the dw the dws seems a tad bit less surefootrd but not by much

Thanks for everyone’s input. I spent a bunch of time reading reviews and test on TireRack. On a whim, I decided to check out Costco - even though they have never had the best price when I shopped them in the past. Turns out that they had a deal going on Michelins which ends today. Ordered (4) Michelin Pilot Sport A/s 3+. Total price mounted and balanced = $882.00. Better price than I found anywhere for a good name brand tire. Should have them on the car in 5-10 days. Will report back and let you guys know what I think of them.

I am certain that they will be quieter than my worn out PSS’s. I read several reports of those being very loud as they get close to being worn out.

SOB! Only $880?! What size wheels? 18in? For my 19s, it ran me a bit more than that!

Dang, killer price. I just saw that they are running the 1 cent installation deal again

That is a great price. I’ve been running the AS3+'s for just about 15k. I think I paid about $1400 installed. All around great tire, not as good in the snow as I expected. I do daily highway driving and don’t consider them noisy. After these go, I will most likely go with separate summer/winter tires.

That was for my 265/35-19’s!

Just got back from having them installed. I think that I will really like these tires. Much quieter than my PSS’s, along with a smoother ride (still need to check and see what pressure they set them at). Handling feels much the same - good grip and sharp turn in.

Yeah, going from worn down PSS’s to brand new AS3+ is a tremendous difference. Ironically I felt a difference in vehicle height when I switched to my AS3+ lol. A cheap solution to lifting my Audi!
