replace 1 tire - buy new or used w/ same tread depth?

What’s the general opinion on replacing 1 bad tire?

I’ve got sidewall damage on the front-right and Costco is sending me a pro-rated road hazard check. Right now the tire has 6mm or 7-8/32 tread depth. Would you replace with a new one (tread depth of 10/32?) or a used one with the same tread depth?

I saw a matching used tire on BestUsedTires.com with the same reported tread depth, but I have never used them.

I’ve never had trouble going with a brand new one, thats within the diameter tolerance so to me its always been a cost/convenience consideration.

I’ve always replaced them in pairs (front or rears). The tire shops will undoubtedly ALWAYS say you NEED to replace all 4 at the same time on an AWD vehicle, but I’ve never had any problems replacing just the front or rears on any of the many AWD vehicles I’ve owned. But I also often end up replacing them when they’ve still got 30-40% tread left, because I hate driving in the rain with tire wear worse than that, so that probably helps.

As beemercer said it sounds like its with in the tolerence range. But If you can get a used unit for a decent saveing its a good idea. I have never heard of the used tire site but it sounds very helpful.

One reason i would think against getting just one new one is I like to have all my tire ware the same. Its good for rotation of the tires and when the tires are at the end of there tredware they are all at the same point where you wont feel bad about getting 4 new tires.

I buy used tires all the time, no reason not to in my opinion. Try this site or ebay.

speaking of selling used tires, anyone need some 225/40/18 pirellis? lol, got 3 of them to dump

I am sure that I heard in the past, that a place like Tire Rack will shave a new tire down for you to match the tread depth of the other tires. Something you can look into if you choose to go new.

used tires…3 of them no less. This is a can’t miss opportunity!

but 3 and I’ll give you the 4th free!

you once wrote that used tires hold value about as well as used condoms lol. I have recycled that a lot.

Worked with guy that would wash and reuse his rubbers. No joke.
