Rev Up and Try to Stall - No Fault Codes

Well…I got a good couple months of trouble free motoring. :joy:
My car (2007 S6 108k) recently started trying to stall and now seems to want to rev high briefly (2500rpm) and then try to stall. I am hoping you all might help me narrow it down. Here are the symptoms and things I’ve noticed:

  • Seems to only occur somewhat randomly until car is about halfway warmed up. Then it runs fine.
  • No fault codes
  • Ran vag com scan which showed no fault codes. (except TPMS)
  • Ran throttle valve adaptation successfully.
  • I had been thinking maybe bad fuel or a fuel problem, but the sudden revving up suggests something else.
  • It acts a little like it did before I replaced throttle valve electrical connectors, except no warning lights.
  • There is a high pitched electronic tone coming from the passenger side throttle body when ignition first turned. No tone from driver side.
  • Checked MAFs, which appear clean.
  • If I try to put it in gear prior to it idling down all the way, it likes to lurch. It’s always done this since I’ve had it, but I’m guessing it’s not normal.
I don’t see any smoking gun, so I’m hoping these clues may bring something to mind.
    Thank you for your help!

Throttle issues are hard to pin down when the throttle body isn’t under constant issue.

The good news is you can look at the throttle bodies in the logs. Pull the intake back off and run the adaption again this time with someone helping you. Watch to see if each throttle body is running it’s full adaption. From there always check your LTFT data and throttle angle at idle.

It can be more frustrating that it isn’t consistent. Notably I’d just check the connectors and make sure there are no issues since the replacement of the connectors.

Thank you for the suggestions @CountVohn!
I think I did what you suggested. Note that the car started and idled normally during this test.
I ran an adaptation with intake tubes off and it seemed to be successful. The throttle valves did not move, at least enough to see. I then did some logging at idle. Here is a screenshot:

Is the “Adaptation (idle)” supposed to be zero? It seems like it should. I’m happy to post the log if you want to see it.
Do these numbers seem normal? I think there’s nothing out of the ordinary here. But again, it was acting normal.
I will check the wiring next, but I was super careful with my soldering and taping and wrapping in loom. So I’m hesitant to mess that all up.

Adaption at idle would depend on if the car is still in cold start or not. Cold start there isn’t much going on until the 02s warm up.

To me this all looks as it should.

Thank you for looking at the info and for the feedback.
It is definitely only happening intermittently and until the car gets to about 100degrees Fahrenheit. When I come to a stop it’s like it wants to shut down and then wants to lurch.
If you have any more tips I’d appreciate it.

ID try a smoke test cold and on a warm motor in the condition it happens. The throttle bodies can act up and that might be the cause of the issues but that can be really hard to track down. You did the wire repair so that removes some issues but it’s good to check some of these other things as well.

This has been happening really infrequently, but the other day I finally was able to get an intermittent code of P0192 Fuel Pressure Sensor Short to GND. With its behavior, I’m thinking the sensor is either going bad or there is some wiring issue. Since it’s so infrequent, I’m going to keep driving until it gets colder out and then tackle it. I’m learning that this car always has some issue and I’m learning that it’s not the end of the world. :joy:

Fault codes can be something you hate to see while at the same time something you welcome. The fuel pressure code might be helpful in getting to the bottom of the total issue. The stalling part makes a bit more sense than the wanting to rev but the fact that they’re both not constant lends you to think it stands more likely to be related.

I would say this. When you get a code. Copy the code and help post it here. To document the issues and the conditions when they happen. It will help all of us help you while documenting the event situations to help possible situations where it might happen so you can look for it.

Thank you for the reminder @justincredible; that’s my bad. I attached the scans to this reply. I think the first scan was one system and the second is an all systems scan. Thank you.

Some good data here. Rkuffel is it ok if we have the mods edit out the data you don’t need to help make the post easier to read?

I don’t mind at all, thank you. I’ll try to weed it out a bit, the next time I scan as well.

Yeah it helps get to the root of the matter –

I decided to see if I could log what the fuel pressure is doing and see if I can capture the “stalling.” I graphed the data and it looks like I captured it. There are some interesting things happening here. Note the following:

  • The X axis is the time stamp.
  • The yellow line is engine load in %
  • The blue line is the spec fuel rail pressure in bar.
  • The red line is the actual fuel rail pressure in bar.
  • The green line is the % capacity(?) of the electric fuel pump in the tank

Like typical, before about 78degrees Celsius everything looks great. After the anomaly, everything looks great. Right around time stamp 415, I pressed on the gas (maybe 50% throttle?) and the car bucked. You can see the spec called for 47.1 bar and the fuel rail indicated 4.47 bar. One second later, everything is fine again. So…I am thinking that this is a fuel pressure sensor issue as the error code shows. If you see something or have any other thoughts about it I appreciate the feedback.

Did another data log today. Again, some weird things happening. I remembered that this started when I replaced the high pressure fuel regulator on the passenger side with a no-brand regulator. Could be related. On line 151, you can see the fuel rail pressure drops down to 5 for a second, but what really interesting is that the low pressure fuel pressure jumps to 66% and the regulator jumps up to 189 (whatever that number means). This makes me wonder if one of the HPFP regulators is cutting the pressure off a lot quickly and this creates back pressure causing the electric fuel pump pressure to jump and also causing a stall. The time stamps would support that too. Here is the data in case anyone is curious:230820_AudiDataLogpdf.pdf (174.3 KB)

Log the same thing in the same string of events on the good side. Then lets compare

Hmm, not sure I understand. Are you saying to log the fuel pressure regulator on the other side? I’m not sure if that’s possible.

Yeah sorry. What we want to see is the effect on bank to bank short term fuel trims. So what you can do is monitor the fuel pressure then see how this effects the banks.

Ahhh, okay, that makes sense. Good idea! Thank you for clarifying. I’ll give that a whirl.
