Patiently waiting for all this heat to leave…
11.xx

I guess I will share some interesting RS4 info gleaned from a recent experiment. In light of jnaut’s success running 12.2 without even a tune…but with lightweight parts, 100 octane and great driving on his side, I wanted to conduct an experiment to see what race gas could do for a stock car vs. pump gas.

More importantly for us RS4 owning nerds, I also wanted to see what the worst possible stock RS4 quarter mile time could be. i.e. we hear of all of these guys who run seemingly terrible times with a boatload of reasons. Well I basically created a worst case scenario RS4 quarter mile time to use as a benchmark.

a) 90 degrees fahrenheit and humid
b) 91 octane piss gas
c) hot car with no cooldown after a 60 minute drive to the track…never turned it off once after arrival, other than tech inspection
d) busy night at the strip with tons of cars and lots of heat soaking in staging (waited 35 minutes in staging to make the pass)
e) 38,000 miles and never carbon cleaned
f) track wasn’t well prepped as there was no sportsman series event that weekend
g) 2nd gear didn’t really grab all that well…not sure if it was a slip from being heated up inching forward in staging for 35 minutes.
Basically armegeddon for a quarter mile pass. I don’t think it could be any worse.

The result? 13.33 @ 105.46 with a 1.90 60 foot time.

I don’t think I could run slower if I tried. Seriously. All these guys who run 13.50+ @ 103 with mods, and then the timeslip blows out the window…either they are in worse conditions than I was (hard to believe unless they live in Denver) and running 89 octane …or their driving is costing them time.

Next experiment was to throw in some race gas and push the mix out to about 100 octane to see if it would help the situation. Not that I care about race gas…and not that I care what an RS4 on race gas in shit DA runs…but really just to see what would happen as far as a bump due to octane. Only got two passes because it was so busy, and the second one I botched the launch, but the first one was ‘decent’. Car was still wicked hot and all the other shit conditions other than octane were in full force.

That result? 13.10 @ 106.53 with a 1.90 60 foot.

So…the race gas sure helped a bit. About 2 tenths and a little over 1mph. This experiment would have to be done a bit more accurately with 4-5 passes in each octane level to see what’s really what, but it was enough to make me want to try race gas in good conditions to see what a little pulled timing (is it carbon?) is costing me…and to see what I am missing due to carbon if anything at all. Again not a perfect carbon test, but interesting to me, so I will do it.

I unfortunately didn’t really give the car much time to ‘adapt’ to the octane boost as a result of it being so busy. Maybe I’ll do this experiement again in the fall when it’s nice and cold. I will load up the race fuel to mix out to 100 or so, and drive 10-20 miles first. I would surmise that the race gas wouldn’t help as much really when it’s cold out…since the car must be pulling so much timing in the heat etc however when I log in the ice cold, my car is still pullling 2-5 degrees for most of the rev range, especially the bigger RPMs where you are for 95% of the track. Could be the carbon? Who knows. We’ll see. Wouldn’t it be nice to see a 12.5 @ 110 bone stock quarter mile time?

Did you happen to log ignition timing before and after race fuel?

No logs. Want me to next time?

Local guy with a (ridiculous) rs4 has the TTS supercharger kit in the mail :o I’ll get him to post times once he has it all up and running.

^Where are you located? Is this RS4 owner on the forums?

Vancouver BC… No he’s not. He’s on AZ but barely posts, met him at a local car meet. Also has a mkv on air. So many people with sweet cars that don’t go on forums, shame shame.

That’s awesome. I doubt he will hit the strip but good to see guys over here getting the kit!

Getting closer to the cooler weather.

How’s the weather else where ? Nobody’s been to the track lately?

not me…still stock and I already hold that title belt lol.

we will have a bunch of us go in october.

Lol true.

Were all doing FIXX fest in November, I will be either in the 11’s or break my car.
I spoke with Dan/Jhm and I might be rocking full exhaust for FIXX . Maybe even a few other Jhm products  .

nice, excited to see how that goes… beat the apr blower time N/A lol

I actually want to give b8 s4 a good running but beating the blower car wouldn’t be bad either ! Haha

Tune is ready for flashing…have you got that done yet?

Dan called me yesterday, but I missed his call. Ill be setting it all up today. I did just get the new tires mounted onto the new wheels. Enkei RPF1 wraped in potenza re-11’s. 11 lb per corner less mass than my last set-up. I need to beat the 11.79s4… just because , no real reason other than people hating the dragstrip.

I forget your current set up but if you’re about to flash the JHM tune and you just added the LW wheels mentioned above you better crush it for us lol. 11’s all motor is my goal and with your current times I don’t think this out of the question for you at all. Beating the fastest B8 with OEM blower would be a nice achievment too and would shut alot of my firends up ;D TSIVAS cough cough. If you can beat the fastest APR S/C’d RS4 I’ll send you a case of your favorite beer.

Good luck.

The JHM tune? Is it now available for general consumers or only special applications?

Thought I was on their mailing list…

Not thread jacking I swear!!!

Short answer = yes. ;D

Call them up. Depending on where you are located you can either go to a shop that is set up with them or you may need a cable to do it from home.

Dude I am so pumped for this that I thought about trying to fly down for Fixx Fest to see it in person! Good Luck!

Sweet.
