Ross Tech help

I just got my Ross Tech VCDS scan tool and I’ve been messing around with it some. I know i’m going to need it eventually and now was a good time to buy one. The car I’m using it on is my 2007 S6. So far I’ve been messing around with activating new features that I’ve been reading about.

One thing has been puzzling and confusing to me. I cannot seem to figure out the “long code helper”. Basically I don’t see the button showing up on any coding screen I go to.

Here is what i’m looking at as far as instructions:
From the first VCDS screen, click “select”
Next screen, click “17-instruments”
Next screen, click “Coding-07”
Next screen, click “Long code helper”

I can get all but the last step… Do I need to do something inside the VCDS to let the program know what kind of car I have so it knows how to help with the coding? or does my car not support long coding?

Ok I’m not too sure on what your looking to do but not all of the long codes will be able to be fed in depending on the module. Some modules you go into the module and select the adaption option and then hover your cursor over the box and it will pull up the code options.

So try the adaption option and see if that works for you.

I’m looking to turn on the oil temp/ lap timer function to be specific. I don’t know for sure if the 2007 model year would support that… Has anyone else gotten it to work? All the instruction I have found mention the long code helper function. IS there another way to change the coding without the long code helper?

First thing I would do is check the measuring block data to even see if you have a reporting oil temp. I’m almost certain you do but that would be the first place to start.

My understanding of how to use this software is very basic at this point. I haven’t played around with it that much yet. So what you’re saying to check sounds foreign to me at this point in time. Heck one of my cars is still OBD1 and the other is barely OBD2.
