RS5 Clunky Transmission issues

Just passed 90K miles. I’ve been trying to see if there are any used transmissions out there but I’m having trouble finding any.

Are you in N. America? I’ll keep an eye out. I still have my 99k gearbox that was still ok but I’d never put it back in a car without rebuilding it. I am planning on rebuilding it someday. Great way to learn more about the gearbox and maybe do some upgrades. If your’s has contaminated fluid, it has to be from a seal if it’s still operating for the most part. I would only imagine a catastrophic failure would cause a crack, or an impact from debri or an accident.

Yes, in North America. Appreciate you keeping an eye out! That’s sort of what I was thinking; I would expect the need for an entire transmission if the fluid was mixing and it was causing everything else to fail.

Just an update: I haven’t had any gearbox lights on the dash and no transmission codes stored when I scan with VCDS. I did get a gearbox malfunction light this weekend combined with a flashing TPMS light. Interestingly though the lights didn’t appear while I was driving. I drove about 10 miles to a football game and parked, then when I turned my car on to leave after the game is when the gearbox malfunction and the flashing TPMS came on. I only had access to first gear and the code cleared itself after I turned the car off and back on and it has been driving fine since.

I thought that was odd but I wanted to include it on the thread just to document what I was experiencing.

Hope you had a nice Thanksgiving.

This indicates the mechatronic unit with 100 % identical symptoms. Common for some years as you know – had the same exact. If no limp home mode comes on, I would not worry about the rest of the transmission; it sounds like just a seal by the severity of it or it has been knocked out of position slightly.

The guys who have done the flywheel will know better than me how far the MTF should reach, but the service manual covers how to change the input shaft seal on page 67

For now I would add sealant if you need to drive before locating and then if I assumed correctly changing the seal.

If full limp home mode comes on permanently just replace the mechatronic unit getting a newer one – the newer the better. In Europe I know they can be repaired by specialists but why try if it is older. wasn’t there a case against Audi recently, maybe was not about this though, sry.

Maybe a seal on the clutch (see around page 10 in the manual), I guess the MTF is for the clutch only. Sry for my ignorance on the transmission

Thanks Tonto. Appreciate the feedback! I did actually come across that case that was closed in September I believe.

I’ll be honest though, not sure how to go about approaching it with Audi. Lol.
