RS5 downpipes install?

A tech at work is installing downpipes on his friends RS5 and was wondering if there’s any good tips on how to get the top nut off the passenger side? He got the driver side done using a crowd foot but no luck with the passenger side.

Any tips would be much appreciated

pictures are always helpful. But if its like im thinking. Pull the inner fender liner and go from the side. It has a better angle you cant see but you can feel and get to it much eaiser

I would put the closed end of a shorty non-ratcheting 12 mm wrench on the nut then strike it with a striking pry bar and a hammer just to break the nut loose. After the nut is loose then a short ratcheting wrench makes life really easy

The local Matco guy sold me a set of ratcheting indexable combination wrenches that work even better for those nuts. The tool number that I have is RIBXLM1112 but when I put that number in the website it didn’t come up. I can post a picture later tonight for you.

Car is still at work and I went home so can’t grab any pics right now.

It has an aluminum shield on the side we bent down for the time being. I can get a small ratchet on it but don’t have any leverage to bust it.

The crows foot felt like it was loosening it but it didn’t get anywhere. I think the nut is rounded now but it’s so hard to see

I think our snap on guy stops by tomorrow so I’ll see what he has

I forgot to mention the nuts face the up because they put the studs in downpipes and not in the manifold

Update with pics:

We were able to get 5 of 6 nuts off and finished the drivers side. Still haven’t gotten that last nut off.

So I called AWE Tuning about their downpipes.

Me: “I’m currently installing your downpipes on a 2013 RS5 and having difficulty with getting the oem piping off”

AWE: chuckles let me guess you got 5 of 6 nuts off and can’t finish the passenger side

Me: I’m guessing you have this issue often

AWE: Yup we have a special tool for it

The tech called his buddy and told him the news. His buddy ordered from a AWE dealer, unsure which one, but was told he didn’t need the tool. Either way he is ordering the tool so hopefully once we get it, we can finish it

you know what jimmy talked about that before. Good for AWE to have a solution.

I used that AWE tool on my exhaust install, really useful to have. Audi must be using the same bolts on the various B8 downpipe flanges. Just recently lent this tool out to someone on AZ, costs about $3 to ship within the cont USA. Let me know if you want to borrow it. A lot of people on AZ did the install by using the appropriate crows foot or extensions. Infinkc is usually pretty good about wrenching advice, he could tell you exactly what is needed.

We were using a crows foot like this…

It didn’t seem I could quite get a good bite on the nut, which makes me think that the nut is rounded now.

The guy is ordering one of AWE tool’s and overnighting it to us

Maybe the size of the crows foot was slightly off? I suppose you could have stripped it. I assume you hit it with some wd40 or pb blaster?

Definitely a tricky spot. Was a PITA for me with the car on jackstands. Not sure how I would have done it without the AWE tool.

Pretty sure I’ve read about people who drilled it out. All the aftermarket kits will go the nut/bolt route, so you are not reusing any hardware.

Yeah the problem with that crows foot too is its 6pt and has very smal usable angle. The crows foot was probably hitting th lip of the DP flange and slipping off.

I would have drilled it but the guy wants all parts taken off to be complete and reusable. Once we got the driver side off, putting the pipe up was super simple.

I’m surprised they made it 2 pieces since once we got the back clamp loose there is plenty of room to put one single piece in

I think it was hitting the dp flange too which didn’t help not stripping it. We will find out once we get the tool if it is stripped or not. It’s too hard to tell where it’s at.

Our snap on guy said he had a pretty identical tool to the awe piece but the guy just ordered the awe one instead.

I thought this was interesting about the awe dp flange too. Look at the gap

Just sent you a PM. We found out AWE is about 1-2 weeks out on having the tools ready to ship

Just search for “box end torque adapters” and order a set. They are a pretty awesome thing to have.

Ah thank you for that! I wasn’t sure what they were called. Definitely getting a set for my box

Replied to the PM.

Just curious if anything, good or bad, has happened to this application. Thanks

If I understand correctly, which I may not, the picture shows the inside of the stock down pipe’s inside diameter?

Looks like the AWE downpipe from the cat flange connection according to the caption.
