RS5 Juddering, Rough start when cold, Bad camshaft sensor

18 July Update: To answer your question first, Ape, yes, I did use OEM camshaft sensor.
So the jerking increased. I decided to take it to an Audi certified mechanic, and provided the entire history of the car. While at the shop, bank2 camshaft sensor threw an error code, and replaced both variable valve solenoids P/N 06E109257P. They did a transmission adaptation, and checked both lower intake flaps and were not stuck. I got the car back late afternoon 15 July. The shop said the jerking is still there but much better and softer. So drove it 16 July back and forth to work, and true the jerking became much softer but it increased in numbers. The car was jerking on every stop and go while before it was hard on cold start, and random when it was warmed. I used to have the transmission mode on auto and when I switched to comfort after this repair on 16 July the car behaved much better and it went back to jerk softly on cold start and random when it warmed up. On the way back from work yesterday 17 July TPMS light came on, followed by transmission light limited drivability, and then followed by CEL. Ran VCSD scan and here are the codes:

  • 10541 - Camshaft Adj. Bank 2 Intake
  • 4113 - Camshaft Position Sensor (G40)
    -10577 - MIL Request Signal Active (Check TCM for errors too!)
  • 8955 - Valve 3 in Transmission Part 1
    P17D4 00 [11101101] - Mechanical Malfunction
    MIL ON - Confirmed - Tested Since Memory Clear
  • 01315 - Transmission Control Module
    013 - Check DTC Memory - Intermittent

Is this a mechatronic issue?

yes, positively. TPMS comes on then it can disappear temporarily when errors are cleared at audi and the adaptation will temporarily help it a bit. the mechatrinic probably always has to be replaced on a 2013.

Sry, before, I mixed up the camshaft solenoids with the sensors not remembering they are separate. Brand new solenoids can advance a bit more but they dont seem prone to become defective or fail and they throw sensor codes at low oil and maybe low pressure and battery as mentioned if at start up. for that the full scan would be needed

I read that topic in full for the first time today, and You seem to have codes for misfires, and especially from camshaft sensors. Honestly at that point, I’d start with the pure basics, and check if the timing gear is in sync physically. For that you need to put the camshaft locking tools on, and the crankshaft locking pins, starting with the latter. If your timing is physically in sync, than you have these possible culprits:

  • Camshaft adjuster issue
  • Camshaft solenoids issue
  • Camshaft sensor issue
  • Faulty wiring
  • Faulty ECM

Also, I’d pull the plugs once more at this stage to see the color and possible differences between

The other things:

  • Check fuel trims (group 032 in VCDS) and post them here.
    As I personally have an S6, i don’t know if your engine has one or two ECMs. If you have two, you need to check these fuel trims in both.
  • Check for leaking injectors. For this you have to get your car up to running temp (based od VCDS reading, not the temp gauge, as it can show you the car is in running temp beginning at 70 *C), then shut the car off, put the ignition back on and read group 140 block 3. If your car has two ECMs, that group might be possible to read only in one of them. To check for leaky injector, you need to monitor the pressure in that block. It should rise quite quickly on hot engine. If it doesn’t change, or even starts dropping, one of your injectors is stuck open.

Wanted to update this post, the culprit of all the problems was to due to a bad mechatronic. Replaced the mech unit and car drives and shifts without the jumps. Fuel line trims and injectors checked out okay. The rough cold start is due to carbon build up. I still experience some not so smooth shift to 2nd gear but no more jumping or juddering on downshift and then upshift before coming to a full stop.
