S4, A6 Dragstrip Day - Round 2

Went to GLD with clochner again today. Conditions were perfect.

Just recently had my new intake installed. Secondary air pump was relocated and now the intake runs all the way down into the passenger side fender/fog area. Wrapped it with header wrap and coated with silicone spray. Might do a new, more aesthetically pleasing, wrap in the future but the current seems to work very well at the moment.

DA was -927. Temp’s didn’t get out of the 30’s. Nobody was there really minus a guy with a Tesla Model S (ran a 13.2) and an Infiniti M45 in the 14’s. Few more cars showed up eventually but we never had any sort of wait.

My setup today:
Pilot Super Sports at ~37 psi all around on 19" stock peelers (last run was winters)
New intake
Better staging and the track seemed to be improved as well
93 octane on 93 tune (used 100 octane on 93 tune last time)
1/4 tank as opposed to 1/2

My best 3:
12.63@108.73
12.65@109.63
12.69@108.84

12.63 run and then a quick out of car 12.75 run:

My slowest run of the day, of 8 total, was 12.78@108.10

Wanted to let clochner tell everyone about is new best time but it’s on my slips already so I guess I have to spoil it; He ran a 12.32@111.62. Here’s a quick video of him running a 12.46@110.28
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LYq8ruZbBuA&list=UURYsc7Qgo3LXYgM34J5UD6A&index=1

We both logged a couple runs. I’m sure clochner’s are better as he had instructions and a list of fields to log. Unfortunately the adv.meas.blocks does not work for the C6 so I have to wander my way through different fields and hope I’m logging something useful. If anyone is interested, I can shoot them to you via email.

Overall, very very happy with my times and surprised to see 12.6’s. Thought I could maybe touch 12.79999 one day but never thought I’d run a consistent 12.6. Really wish I had program switching so I could run 100 on APR’s 100 tune… cough cough.

BOOM! That is fucking awesome Ken! Very happy for you… Great times… 100 on the 93 tune may have netted a 12.5! Did you remove spare and tools? Sounds like Clochner did awesome as well! All tracks closed here today with snow! LOL Wish I could get some -900 DA’s… I’ll be at it Sunday…

I wanted to add after watching the vids a few times… those are some very healthy launches for a tip… Violent almost… I like it…

I’ll have my slips and vids up within an hour or so. As Ynnekdude said - conditions were perfect today, and we basically had the track to ourselves. I’m very happy about my times. And seeing the A6 run 12.6 consistently on pump - wow! :o

Thanks Ron!

Yeah, we had a little snow last night as well. Nothing accumulated in the city but apparently a little did at GLD. Fortunately the track stayed open though because conditions couldn’t have been better. While there was a long delay before we were able to start our runs, the track prep paid off. The difference between my 8 runs was about .15.

Spare was removed but tools were not. I was going to remove the tools but I was running late this morning so I only managed to take out the wheel. Just to clarify, you’re just referencing the jack and wrench, right?

Mid 12’s on an A6… very cool! Congratulations, that’s really moving. I’m too lazy to look it up - what are the fastest known time for any A6 of any era? Including the 5-banger C4. Could this be the fastest?

My setup for the day:

  • 18" Dunlop Winter Sport 3D tires w/ ugly Moda wheels
  • APR Stg II V2, 93 on 93
  • Milltek non-res
  • APR full intake
  • 1/4 tank for first several runs (including my best time), and 1/8 tank for my later runs (including the one w/ LC)
  • Spare removed, tool kit in the trunk

Best 3 times:

(1) 12.32 @ 111.62 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S4yWunWdUDc
(2) 12.32 @ 111.85 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8XLFNwKOxJE
(3) 12.44 @ 111.49 w/ Launch Control - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P4HPD6R4psQ

I think it’s worth noting that my LC pass yielded only my third-best ET, trap, and 60’. The non-LC passes were better on all three counts.

Ron - I logged two passes and will e-mail to you. I really can’t make sense of it - hopefully you can  I followed Jspazz’s instructions on his AZ thread. However, I searched all 600 fields and could not find the option to log boost. Perhaps you can point me in the right direction in that regard, and I’ll make a note to do more logs in the near future.

Overall, awesome track day. I think I’m finally ready to do some passes on race gas.

Sak - can you add our times to the list when you get a chance? Thnx.

Brandon, At dinner with the wife for our anniversary so I’ll look more later… timing is pretty low which is more typical of pump gas tune… was this 93 or 91? Boost looks nice but I don’t know ambient pressure… Almost hit 19psi… Not a lot of bypass which is what I would expect… IAT’s are stellar again to be expected with the weather… On race with more timing you probably run a high 11… You need to get a open air intake… I’ll email you later or Sunday… Ron

Thnx, Ron! In no way did I intend to disturb your anniversary dinner! Lol. I was on a 93 tune. Will look out for the email - really appreciate it. 8)

LOL! It’s all good… Married 6 years and together 7 prior… About 1/3 my life so she knows what’s up… lol…

Honestly, timing is way light… Are you sure this isn’t a 91 tune??? Whose gas are you running?

Like I said IAT’s are very good but that is weather dependent… I’m still cooler 5-10F+ on average… CPS works for sure but no harm here your #'s are great…

Boost is good… little to no bypass…

Intake air numbers are about 2% less peak and 1% on average vs my logs but good for sure… I really think open element intakes work better for flow… Did Ken log as I would like to see his air mass#’s…

Overall I would say the car ran well with the exception of the rather low timing even for pump… Did you or can you send to J and Tsivas? Curious as to what they think… Guys?

Just shot you an email Ron

Congrats on the great times guys and for sharing all the info related to them! I’ve gotta get my GIAC Stage I to the track soon to get in on all the fun!

snap you guys are keeping me busy with this 1/4 mile list!

Great showing by both cars.

Ynnekdude…I thinkt he 93 file makes the most sense on 93. I’ve seen people run big octane on pump files only to have it give them nothing. 93 in Chicago area is good 93, and in this weather it should be taking advantage of your modlist.

Basically you’re what…325 lbs heavier than a B8 S4 and have a ‘worse’ transmission (for a to b acceleration tests)…and just ran a time that puts you right in the middle of the B8 S4 1/4 mile chart. Good show for you and APR.

Ron - my assumption is that this is a 93 tune. Frankly, the guys at APR’s “flagship” dealer in Chicago - Genesis Racing & Development - could have screwed it up. I never really brought this up before, but let’s just say that, after upgrading to V2 of APR’s Stage II, I did not leave the facility confident that I got what I paid for . . . At this point, I think the only way to know for sure which program I was running is to send my ECU back to Opelika. I need to know EXACTLY how each four tune files are programmed - i.e., is program 1 93 or 91, etc.

Edit: Ynnekdude has also had issues/concerns with GRD. So it’s not only me. I think Arin would be appalled at GRD’s facility - and he shld think twice before recommending them to other Chi-town folks. APR and Chicago Performance & Tuning need to hook up . . .

Re fuel, I was running Shell V-Power 93, so that couldn’t have been the issue.

For everyone’s convenience, I’ve posted my logs on Google docs: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Am2YidRuHCaXdGYzMkxWQVJGXzFUSEltYjNKX0RDMlE&usp=sharing

These are logs of two consecutive passes. Any comments would be much appreciated. Have at it.

Great stuff cloch, thanks for sharing and getting out there.

As for not quite getting what you thought you paid for, maybe send the logs to Arin? Haven’t seen him on here in a while but you 3.0t guys are sure representing APR in a good way.

It’s great to see so much info on the B8 out there.

Congrats to both of you for personal bests!

I’d have joined you if we weren’t out of town…

Conditions were awesome - glad that you got to take advantage of them.

Thnx, bango! I may send these to Arin to see what he thinks. Perhaps he can chime in here. Also might be good to do some more logs - don’t want to jump to any rash conclusions.

ZCD - thnx man! You probably would have run a personal best as well. Great conditions and no waiting time. Would be great to head up there with more of the Chi-town guys sometime.

Cloch and kenny, awesome.

Cloch you set a winter tire record for the 60’ on our platform lol.

I looked at the logs…I agree with prime, your timing is about one degree light for the boost you are pushing. And the boost you are pushing is sorta low, sorta like Ron’s logs, mostly under 15 psig. What’s REALLY weird is that your car is calling for a LOT more load, your requested manifold pressure is over 2 psig higher than your car is asking for. Your car is plenty fast considering the logs.

For what it’s worth, maybe a good idea to do a once-over on your intake hose, make sure nothing is blocking flow like that rubber piece at the radiator cowl, and/or if you have a boost gauge, to check it for leaks. Has your blower ever been off for engine service or anything (leaks)? The 2+ psig difference in the load request is very very weird, it’s usually well under 1 psig with APR.

J

two of the 4.2 guys went to Cayuga today and went 1.74 and 1.75 respectively multiple times on their winters, once they got their tire pressures right. Neither guy had been better than 1.82-1.85 on summers before.

The tire pressure thing was huge. I’m kicking myself I never did it.
