S4 gets world's best engine again

Happy to see the 2.7L Boxster engine on there too.

That’s not too bad. I don’t know much about wards but it seems like they have had the motor category thing for a while. Not too many exciting motors on there. It seems like the 3.0 v6 motor in almost any car maker got an award.

Just to update I looked and the 3.0 has been on the list since 2010. The 4.2 v8 was on there 3 years in a row too. So they know good motors

The Audi 3.0 TFSI did not make the list this year. If you look at that list it is from last year (the article is dated 2013…). The 1.8 TFSI in the new Golf is the only Audi/VW engine to make this year’s list.

There is a rule for how many times an engine can repeat.

“To be eligible for the Ward’s 10 Best Engines competition, an engine or propulsion system must be all-new or significantly re-engineered and available in the U.S. market with a base price not exceeding $60,000.”

That would explain why it’s the same motor just in different cars each time.

Yea their criteria is strange…since they are considering not just the engine, but entire “driving experience.” It would appear an engine is eligible for 2 years on a single car. So the 3.0T went b8 s4, s4, c7 a6, b8.5 s5, s5

That should leave room for the Q5

The 3.0T has been in every longitudinal chassis except the R8.

R8 3.0T swap. Someone find a salvage R8 on the interwebs.

The new 2016 R8 is rumored to offer a V6TT. Why not the 3.0T. I personally think that would degrade the R8 though.

You have to wonder if Audi is going to pick up the 3.0L V6 turbo from the Macan S or the 3.6L V6 turbo from the Macan Turbo. Or if they’re going to make new engines again.

I really don’t see the need for a V6TT R8. It probably wouldn’t be a good idea to have a entry level R8 for under 100K since it would lower the status of the previous R8s. Plus I don’t see enough market room for three different R8s between $100K to $200K. As an aside, I don’t see the R8 V10+ as a really different car. It is more of a S-line version of the base V10.

If it were me then I would use the V8TT for the new R8 and save money since the power could be slightly improved over the older cars and that would keep costs down. Use the lower end V8TT to make around 460 hp and the higher end V8TT to make 580 hp. The problem with this theory is that upper end R8 probably wouldn’t be exotic enough for buyers without the high revving engine and turbo cars can be kind of whiny.

Regardless it will be very interesting to see what Audi decides for the new R8.
