I can all but guarantee that you don’t have carbon buildup. Your car is an MPI engine (multi port injection) not an FSI (Fuel Stratified Injection…a.k.a. direct injection).
MPI cars have fuel washing the valves, especially the necks of the valves where the FSI motors do not, as they inject fuel directly into the combustion chamber. As a result, the MPI cars look nice and clean while after as few as 10,000-15,000 miles the FSI cars have carbon buildup on the valves.
go look at the pics in this thread of an S4 and an RS4 at 50,000 miles, both in Detroit.
Krell as sakimano said your going to be good carbon wise. I would look more at your fluids like oil both motor and gear. Also the big service things are coil packs and fuel filter. The fuel filter is one of the worst if not changed.
again, amazed at the knowledge around, you guys are experts. Thanks for getting back. Saki, sick link, sick pics. Can’t beleiev an 80k sports sedan has issues like that, crazy Def gonna get a fuel filter. Any recs on what kind is best? As far as coil packs, will replacing these effect performance at all? How would I notice if the packs were bad? Thanks
You can check the part numbers on your coil packs and tell if there good. Audi is still doing a recall on bad Coil packs you might want to call the dealer as you might be able to get them replace for free.
The fuel filter for your car will depend on what year it is. Remind me? Best to stick with OEM anyway…but there are two versions for the 4.2 S4. 2007 and 2008 cars generally need the 3 line filter. 2004-2005 cars generally need the 4 line filter. 2005.5 and 2006 cars are a crapshoot, so you should get under the car and take a look. As a rule, the Audi parts department will almost always get it wrong for some reason when you give them your VIN if you’re a 2005.5 or 2006. I don’t know how that’s possible, but they manage it. lol.
Duncan on here did a great DIY. We should get him to bring it over here.
