S4 test drive

Looking for a new car for the wife. Her lease is up in a few months.

I don’t know what I was expecting… Knowing I’m accustom to the jhm tuned S5 I knew there’s going to be a difference in power delivery, just can’t say I was impressed enough to get the A6 version of the 3,0t

I know my S5 is somewhat less amazing stock as well… If you had to keep or put your tuned S4 back to stock would you still love it? Or is the added performance the keeper key?

My S4 is back to stock, it’s still great. It’s not a totally compelling car that I really want to keep forever though, maybe because it’s DSG, and that factor makes the car boring in a way. But there is really no comparison between the S4 3.0T and the A6 3.0T. I drove a loaner A6 3.0T for weeks, it was such a letdown, it made me appreciate DSG so much more.

And yes, it’s currently my wife’s daily driver. She finally stepped out of her S600 and she doesn’t want to drive anything else now.

Can’t you just stage II it anyway? I’ve done that to her cars, lol she’d never notice and I don’t think I ever told her about the B5 S4 tune until a year or so later.

When I get in the S4, min few times a week, now that it’s stock I really notice it not having the pulley. That alone made a huge difference, absolutely, on every drive because it had so much more grunt down low. But it’s not a deal killer by any stretch, if you never had it you’d never miss it.

My worries are just that. I know the A6 is a great car but you’d almost expect it to be a little behind the S4 in wow factors.

I would so much like to just get the A6 and stage II it. I’d prefer that. The deal breaker is the potentially voided warranty.

Very helpful post

Just don’t go REVO and you’d be fine. Many many miles have been done on APR stage II, so so so many and as far as I know there hasn’t been an engine failure.

My wife liked the A6 3.0T the whole time she was driving it, until she got back in the S4 and realized how frickin HUGE the A6 was. Parked next to the S600, the A6 looked the same size. And that trunk was ridiculously large, it can practically swallow a pallet. I showed so many people and everyone couldn’t believe it, and man, if something rolls to the front of the trunk you have to climb right in to get it.

Are you deciding between the S4 and A6? I think the A6 is more like a baby A8, if anything.

We want a A8 I’d be ok with a A6. We need the room and my wife loves the bigger cars.Tune wise it would only be one choice APR. My concerns fall in the dealer flagging me for the tune and one Audi V8 ie enough for me. Other then the 3.0t I can’t see another motor or car that would sufficiently fill the gap

I had a 2010 S4 with a GIAC tune. Given my issues with the DSG on that car I elected to keep my 13 sock as far as the engine goes at least for a now while under warranty. This car is fast, it really doesn’t need a tune. Perhaps after 18-24 months a bump in power would help, however as a daily she is good.

Yeah I looked just to see, the 535xi is a 5-10K+ premium over the A6 3.0T, with similar options. Basically you could slide in a E550 4matic for the same price as the 535xi with similar options, and it’s loaded…and much faster.

To me the ‘deal’ is the Audi, but I’d think about waiting to see the new 2014 E-class, only a few months away.

I find all these cars to be boats though…not for me. That’s actually what kills the idea of an S6 for me…it may have a stonkin motor, the rest of the package is big and floaty. I’d rather just have a Q7 3.0T and have a proper boat. Lol imagine an upgrade to stage III on that…!

I saw a quartz grey c6 a6 3.0t avant yrsterday. That’s more rare than any RS car here.
That was what I wanted to get to replace our b8 a4 2.0t avant but annoyingly they’ve cancelled it too. Looked great though. Good family haulers

Regarding stock s4s all my friends and colleagues who I have advised to get an s4 are bone stock and they are all happy. It’s half a dozen now, and a couple of them tell me on the regular how much they love the car.
One sold it already and bought an S7 because he liked audi so much. One guys lease ran out and he got a b8.5 s4. One is obsessed with it and frankly he was not a car guy at all before.

One for sale in Vancouver.

^^ That has been for sale of various websites for ages! I was looking for an A6 3.0t Avant but the only one for sale in Toronto came with no service history and they wouldn’t let me test drive it unless I “commited to buy” and wouldn’t let me take it for an indepenent PPI

Oh really, I guess when you are selling a MY2009 vehicle for $50,000 it might take a while. Totally off topic but I love the look of it. I used to hate Avants, but ever since getting into an Audi they’ve grown on me very quickly. Even the new all roads look great with the flared fenders.

^^^that’s reassuring lol
