S6 5.2 V10 motor overview

As some of you know Jimmybones recently bought a 2008 S6 that was in terrible condition to part out. The car had some front end damage and was apparently a good deal so he picked it up to help the community. And has been parting out the car. He sold the motor and transmission for cheap to a local Audi owner near me that just wanted the cylinder heads and a few extra spare parts just the sake of having extra parts.

I asked if I could drop in and help document the condition of the motor and make a thread about the condition of motors at this mileage. It just seemed to make sense as something to do as most S6 owners are now getting great deals on these cars but what most owners dont know is what to expect and what kind of condition these motors are at with 100k

This thread is here to help show the location of parts what they look like. What maintenance issues to look for and what those issues might look like. Its an attempt to do a more in depth overview of the motor its parts and its issues.

If anyone has any questions this would be a good thread to ask them in so we can all help new owners understand what they are looking at and getting into.

I have seen several threads like this over the years and I have always found it helpful. As someone that has been looking for a good low mileage good priced S6 for over a year. I also think this is a good way to show all the issues I have found and in some cases the reasons I have not bought myself an S6 yet… The search still continues.

Here is what we are working with. Audi S6 2008 100k miles. This is the exact condition you are going to see almost every one of these motors in.

Hold place for basic motor 1

hold for basic motor 2

Hold for basic motor 3

hold for basic motor acc parts

hold for basic motor acc 2

Hold for components 1

Hold for components 2

Hold for transmission 1

Hold for transmission 2

Hold for exhaust manifolds

I know most of us will already know this but we need to start somewhere. Best to start simple.

1= You will see the 1 twice. This is because im showing both the passenger and driver side cylinder heads. If you have a scan tool and you get a code for anything motor related on bank 1 that is the passenger side. Bank 2 is the driver side. Dont get this confused with 02 sensor codes as those banks are much different.

2= the intake manifold.

3= This is the crank pulley. When you see people saying LWCP they are usually refering to changing the heavy crank pulley with a JHM light weight crank pulley

4= The Alternator. When doing a carbon clean many people ask how they can spin over the motor. The most common way is by using a 24mm socket on the Alternator nut.

5= This is the belt tension adjustment unit. These are good units to check when replacement of the belt is done.

6= The water pump.

I know these are basic and I plan on getting into more detail on some parts. If anyone has any questions or can think of parts that need to be shown post below. Im going to try and do 1 update to this thread every monday. If we have any questions or requests I can address them

Justin, where is this located?
I wouldn’t mind seeing in person.
Thanks, Bill

might be worth doing a video walkaround as well. great thread idea, can’t wait to see (and learn) more! +reps for doing this for everyone on the boards

This is located local to us. I’ll ask about getting a good time to have a holiday car meet up.

I think this should be helpful and lets face it we all are very excited about these cars. I feel doing something like this should really help take some of the mystery out of the motors and it can act as a bit of a guide as well. I was going to do a video walk around but the tough part is I didn’t really know what to show. That’s why I was looking to get any ideas from guys on here on stuff they would like to see.

Recently there has been lots of talk about the thermostat and issues with them getting stuck. So I thought Ok let me show where the water pump is at and what you will find when looking at the thermostat.

One of the neat things about the S6 V10 is that the ecu can apparently work to open the thermostat if needed. I can show more on that later in this post. For now we will be lookin at #6 in this post.

Here is a little better shot of the water pump. Normally what you see on standard cars is the water pump with the thermostat in the block but not with the S6

The thermostat is located at the end of the water pump unit.

The bolts holding on the thermostat housing are not you standard out of the tool box parts. I was able to use a SAE 1/4 in socket to easily get the housing off but the tool is… I’ll have to find the actual size and put it back in this post.

You don’t need to pull the water pump off to get the thermostat but you will need to pull the house off. That looks like this.

The interesting part is that the actual thermostat is mounted inside this housing. with 3 T15 torx bits. That looks like this. What you see below is the underside of the housing with the thermostat still bolted in

Once you remove the t15 bolts you can pull the thermostat out. You will then be able to clearly see the coil and electronic components of the thermostat the ECU plugs into via the wire harness.

Not willing the leave well enough alone I really found myself intrigued on how this thermostat would open with nothing more than voltage. So I set out to test and see if I could get this to open with nothing more than a 9v battery. I was considering using 12v from the actual battery but I didn’t want to create a big mess.

The first few tests were sorta shotty due to not having a really good wire connection and I think there might need to be more amps to help get this moving. So for now it seemed like I was able to get the coil inside the thermostat to get hotter but without more testing and better idea on what it actually takes to get this to budge I felt like I should just take a step back before I went too much further.

I don’t think voltage actually moves anything. I think tis a coil system that warms up and then moves the door. This is something that I’m interested in getting more data on as this seems to be one of the things that you often see S6 owners needing to replace.

If anyone has any ideas let me know. until then I’m looking for more electronic diagrams to be able to place a proper test
