S6/8, Q7, A6/8, 5.2, 4.2, 6.0 - Starter Motor

So from research the 07C911023H fits the above mentioned cars and is the new PN. Old PN is 07C911023G

The H is backordered for a genuine OEM from audi which is what I was referencing. My starter has 120k on it and I believe I should replace while the engine is out problem its backordered!

Yall think the bosch reman 07C911023HX would be ok? Makes me a little nervous.

I know the audi stamped unit is Bosch, still is it not safer to get a audi stamped product?

Were talking about an engine out failure here…

The starters generally have a 120k life span. So your right at the time you would be in the replace zone. A reman unit is going to be better than a non replace situation IMO

A BOSCH part is a BOSCH part no matter if you see the Audi rings on it or not. Audi have their own quality control but BOSCH for sure has a similar level of quality control. If I find out BOSCH produces a part for my Audi I never bye it “original”. I buy the BOSCH part any day.

Regarding replacement of starter motor… I always drive my Audis to the point where others would have dumped them ages ago :sunglasses: mostly because I just can’t let it go again and I maintain them as good as possible.
My last A6 (2.4) had 540000km (over 335k miles) on the clock before I sold it to a very happy Audi fan… still with original starter and no issues.
My current S6 has over 300000km (190k miles) on the original starter.
No question… if I pull the engine I will also change the starter

Starter longevity is far more dependent on the number of starts, the length of time each start takes and if the starter is still hot (from sitting under the manifold) when started again than it is on mileage.

All else being equal, if you only start your car twice a day, the starter is going to last a lot longer than someone who starts their vehicle twenty times a day.

I fall under the category of two starts a day with 180,000 miles on the clock and it was not even a remote consideration to replace the starter when I re-built the engine two years ago.

Mind you, the starter could shit the bed tomorrow, but that would just give me an excuse to install headers or straight pipe the cats.

Well quite the precidement, loving the feedback! Let me add that my car is a west coast / 0 rust car, my original starter has no oxidation or anything. Always started strong.

I as well drive the S6 four times a month, not my dd

Has anyone “rebuilt” or inspected their starters? Supposedly it’s pretty easy to inspect the armature and brushes. Lubricate stuff, etc.

My fear are all the people whom have complained about remained products, quite a few about bosch reman starters. I had a brand new reman fcp bosch alternator where the gd pulley came off and it shredded my serp belt and I lost PS while in a corner, sorta scary…

I wonder if it’s possible to drop the engine a small amount only to get to the starter “semi engine drop” to do the starter down the road. I would think remove subframe, right engine mount, and then access to the starter. Def easier said than done I bet

I suspect that the factory exhaust manifolds limit access to the top bolt for the starter (which comes in from the transmission side above the differential) enough to prevent removal unless you lower the engine somewhat.

However, since you straight piped your cats, you may be able to access it from the backside with a few extensions and swivels.

I had my RF wheel off to do my tie rod end this afternoon and you can see the side of the head on the top starter bolt. I would think if you removed the heat shield from around the front differential housing, you should have decent access.

That was not bad at all, arrived after only 12 days, thought it would be weeks. It is audi/ vag stamped, in Audi box, and an H not HX so good to go

Kind of funny it’s not an HX but it shows a 2017 date of manufacture? I know on a 4.2 S5 you can put the radiator in the service position and remove the alternator and then pull the starter out from the front. An a 4.2 RS5 (Block related to the V10), you can’t remove the starter from the front as there is a web on the block in the way and you can’t get the right side Aluminum engine mount off as the manifold needs to come off first and can only be done with the engine out of the car. Audi says, and I agree that on the RS5 the starter comes out from the rear after removing the transmission (definitely easier than an engine pull), may be the same way on the V10.
I don’t think rebuild Bosch necessarily means it was rebuilt by Bosch. Could very well be rebuild by any manufacturer big or small, some do as good as original and some cut corners to save costs.

I have never seen an exchange part (X at the end) with X at the end of the ref ID put on the part… so even if it’s an HX part I’m not sure that they would have stamped HX instead of H…

I ordered an H, aka brand new in this case, not rebuilt. The HX is rebuilt

I was stating I was happy I received what I purchased and they didnt try and pawn off an HX on me because of the “backorder”

Sorry, read too fast…
