s6 brake upgrade options

Hi Barry

Do you have any pictures or more detail you can show on the mod for the Phaeton air ducts?

Did you have to take off the bumper?

Thanks!
Rich

Hi Rich, no sorry I don’t.

IIRC it was just a case of enlarging the lower mounting hole as that one doesn’t line up.

It’s a very easy job.

Thanks Barry, but the S6 doesn’t have any front bumper air ducts to actually get the air to the front fenders. How did you solve that problem? I was thinking about taking out the bumper air duct covers and inserting a 3” tube from the front and to the fender wells. Did you do something like this?

Hi Rich, no I didn’t provide any ducting to the brakes.

The benefit of the Phaeton setup is the significantly larger scopes that direct a much higher volume of air onto the disc’s. I’m not convinced a duct from the front of the car would make much difference.

The modification doesn’t provide any real performance gain but increases the longevity of the discs which otherwise warp very quickly.

Hi Barry

Thanks for that mate so they work without having seperate ducts. My need is that I’ve started to track the car and have noticed that the brakes do get too hot.

So to fit those two separate pieces from the phaeton how do they attach together? do they just screw together? (Sorry for all the questions mate, I do appreciate it!)

Thanks

I have the Phaeton ducts (bought new on Ebay for cheap) on my s6 and the scoops are nearly parallel with the front of the fender liner which in my opinion is a bottle neck, however is better than stock. My plan was to install ducting from the front air scoops in the bumper that are not being utilized (besides the secondary radiator on the drivers side) to feed air to the rotors / ducts. However, being I doubt I’ll ever track this heavy yacht religiously, I have opted to not mess with additional ducting at this time. The two piece 390mm rotors imo will survive whatever I throw at them. A few pics of my setup. C6 RS6 calipers, ap discs, and some soft disc happy hawk hps 5.0 low dust pads.

Did the rear c6 rs6 upgrade also

I like brake upgrades, easy and fun retrofit

Yeah that rs6 upgrade looks amazing… I’ve just got some new standard one piece S6 discs from SBC and Yellowstuff pads but I fear they’re struggling with the job. Also that’s what I thought about the Phaeton upgrade, I’m not sure how the air gets in there without a duct from the front bumper coming through the fender liner. I’m planning on doing this over the next few weeks and I’ll post some pics once I’ve done it.

Do the two Phaeton pieces just screw together? Thanks!

Is the RS6 brakes a direct bolt on?
I know that the standard A6 wheel hubs have a smaller offset than the S6, but are unsure on the RS6.

No they are not. I machined 8mm spaces out of 01 tool steel and longer bolts from the dodge magnum as the rs calipers need to be pushed out to accommodate the offset of the oe rs rotors. RS hubs, s6 / 4.2, and 3.0t all run different hubs lol.

Yes the phaeton ducts bolt together in two pieces but direct fit to s6 hubs.

That’s just genius

Was it the same front and back with the 8mm offset?

No rears required rs6 knuckles / spindle because calipers need to go IN ~8mm. Rears were a pita. Car was down for 3 months while I sourced the rs6 rear suspension to make fit. Luckily the parts guy in Latvia hooked it up. The rs6 has a wider track than the s6. I started by grinding the s6 knuckles at first to make fit and after removing too much material and determining it wasn’t safe I chose to replace the entire assembly. Now wheels are very flush with the fender so tires rub on outer lip of rear liner. My wheels are et48 20x9 with 275/35s. I’m gonna try a 265/30 and should be perfect. The rear 356x28mm ap discs weigh 1.5lb more each than the stock single piece 330x22mm s6 rotors. There is also more initial bite from the rear than before, noticable but still within a tolerable grip point. Running oe s6 pad in rear, fits rs6 caliper. The pedal is firm and stiff as before. MC upgrade is not needed. The RS6 MC has same plunge depth and diameter as s6/a6 which is the 26.99mm. Supposedly the booster is a different pn but from all my research the booster is also the same.
