Has anyone done this on a S6? Picked up a kit a couple weeks ago and getting ready to do this. Crawled under the car today to check things out and make sure I had all the tools and it looks like the exhaust is going to make this a bit of challenge. Looks like you have to remove the exhaust piece on drivers side at a minimum? Looks like some of the pan bolts under the exhaust on the passenger side will be a bitch as well.
BTDT?
Jimmy did this on my s6, not sure if he took pics or not, perhaps he will chine in here on the steps

This is step by step. Let me know if the pictures load. If not I can reload them.
Thanks, have read that post, very helpful and I understand the procedure, just looking for some help on maneuvering around the exhaust. If I uploaded pictures correctly…you should be able to see what I mean.
I don’t have the pictures handy.
To get the transmission pan off and back on easily then the exhaust needs to be taken off. There are like Y sections that get in the way of the transmission pan bolts. Usually the nuts that hold the exhaust on are rusted and like to round by this point so I had to use a twist socket to get them off. After I replaced all the nuts with new ones and used a healthy dose of anti-seize.
The twist socket that I used looks like this:

I was afraid of that, those front connections don’t look like any fun…I should have soaked them in PB when I was under the car…were those 12mm?
Thanks!
The one picture you posted didnt come up.
The exhaust will have to come off in your case. It is a pain. The good news is most S6 cars are well taken care of. But yes make sure to use the pb on the bolts. Soak them and to break the bolts loose if you dont get the bolts to come loose on the first hit of the impact due to rust or bad corosion I hit the bolts with a hammer after soaking them with PB. After that I hit them again with an impact. If they dont break loose I hit the bolts in the other direction on the impact. I set the impact to tighten and hit them once. Then switch back to loosen.
It has been a great help. Almost every time you will get the bolts to come off. Even if they break the bolt itself
Yes you need to soak them in PB blaster or an ATF/Acetone 50/50 mix for a while. It also helps to use a mapgas torch to heat the nuts up before trying to loosen them. I had to do that on a B8 S4 with the stock exhaust clamps after like 80K miles.
I don’t remember the size off hand. It is either a 12 or 13 mm for the nuts.
How often should this be done? My car has 80k on it, no idea if this has been done. Transmission feels alright minus the ZF Lurch (more info on another thread)
I did it at like 50kish if I remember correctly. It actually seemed to shift a bit better after the new fluid. I’d recommend doing it.
Same while my car isnt a s6 I changed mine right around 50k There is a noticable difference. Depending on how bad the fluid is you might see more gains or less than others.
While you’re in there, look into a ‘Zip Kit’ which replaces a valve/valves to sharpen up the shifts.
Worthwhile!
There’s also a gasket 09E325443 you want to replace.
And, if you want to get really serious…

Happy to be a middleman for any S6 owner who wants to look into these. This is where I took my car and they confirmed all these packages are available for our box.

Will the Zip Kit fix the slow or delayed 2-1 down shift issue? That’s my biggest issue…
My kit came with the pan gasket of course, what’s the location of the gasket you recommend?
Not ready for the upgraded tans yet! However, very good to know they’re available. Thanks!
The zip kits wont fix the down shift issue. They rise the line pressure helping the upshifts complete faster.
paul if you can post more it would be good to get more information. The shipping from Aus would be super expensive but it would be good to know what there is out there.
Hopefully will attack this job soon, thinking I should plan on new exhaust gaskets, ordering exhaust nuts from FCP, seems like I’ve seen a reference to good dealer/source for OEM parts, can’t find in my searches, anyone have a good place to buy OEM parts? Hate to give the local dealer any business, they mark up parts substantially over list…
Jim ellis audi usually has great pricing, genuine audi parts as well. Fcp, europaparts, ecstuning combined will probably have what you need as well.
Those are some great places to look. But for general bolts. Look at home depot or a local hardware store. You will find a good range of stuff espically if your replaceing exhaust bolts.
That’s correct. If anything, the zip kits will make the bump worse.
I had the bump, and I took it to the dealer for them to ‘reset’ the gearbox - has never happened since.
Regarding the gasket, it’s #4 on this diagram - sits in the mechatronic.

Shipping from Aus won’t be too bad. I have a FedEx account, and happy to pass on my direct cost of course. I would imagine 2-300 AUD, for the clutch packs, they’re not too heavy. In any case, shipping cost will be small relative to the price of the kit!
They also do cryo-treated billet input shafts, and all kind of crazy things. They have street-registered 1000+hp Falcons (RWD) doing 10-sec 1/4s through this box.

Paul thanks for the back up post.
I would be interesting to hear what direct options are available for the V10 transmissions. I looked into another company in AUS for transmission parts a few years ago when I installed the JHM nitrous kit on my S4. Turns out the JHM TCU tune took care of all my issues. Still doing a rebuild it would be nice to have these tested parts.
i’m putting a step by step together now its more involved then the link above for our c6 s6 v10
