S6 vs snowstorm

Wish I shot some video footage today, but I took a drive up to the mountains today during a VERY heavy snowstorm. The chain control guy took one look at my car and tires and waved me through, allowing me to tackle the 6 inches of snow on the highway with naked rubber. After about 30 miles of heavy snow driving, I think my car only lost traction 1 time, when the rear end slid about 2 inches to the left around a corner. Stability control kicked in immediately and the car pulled itself straight. That’s exactly what these systems were designed for, and it was amazing to see it in action, performing exactly the way it should. As I trucked along at a relatively safe 30mph, I passed countless numbers of SUV’s and pickup trucks with big knobby mud/snow tires slipping and sliding all over the place, one of them was spinning tires so badly going up a hill that they were starting to smoke. I just wanted to mention that these cars handle snow and ice exactly the way Audi says they do, and I couldn’t be happier with how it performed. I even passed a few WRX’s that were slipping and sliding like crazy, and as a previous owner of one, I can say they are usually pretty good snow cars too.

Unfortunately, I passed a black S7 that was stuck in some deep snow on the shoulder at one point, and I wanted to stop and help but it was a place where I almost certainly would have become stuck myself and/or creamed by another car. I’m guessing either inexperienced driver or summer tires, or both.

One last thing, it might be the opposite of what common sense would dictate, but the S6 handles in the snow and ice 2x better when in Sport mode. Take it easy on the gas pedal, but at the same time, make sure you are applying at least a little throttle at all times. The quattro system doesn’t do anything special when there isn’t any power being applied to the wheels.

Also, I think having a 9,000lb (give or take) V10 motor weighing down the front end was a big help! Never experienced any understeer at all, at any speed.

Great story. Its always fun to read about a great quattro experience. Thanks for sharing.

It’s always fun isn’t it?

hahaha, that’s almost exactly what the highway looked like yesterday, car after car after car being pushed out of the snow, spinning tires like crazy, sliding all around, it was chaos… chaos that I simply steered around while drinking my coffee and listening to the radio ;D

Of course, I have routinely driven 2wd cars in similar conditions over the years, without chains, so I’m not exactly a newb. Audi just made it too dang easy, I was all prepared for having to put some of my experience to good use, but there was no need, car pretty much drove itself. Feel bad for the S7 dude, I’m guessing he was like 90% of the other drivers on the highway that day - a san francisco yuppie who’s only seen snow on TV. Lots of All-Roads out there though, they seemed to be doing just fine as well. Got a honk and a wave from one of them haha

Hit this traffic jam when the weather took a turn for the worse…

And here’s another shot about 5 minutes later after nearly everyone else pulled (or slid) off the road…

I had snow tires on a couple of cars before my audi. They help so much.

But (proper) quattro…quattro is another world. It’s eerie.

We get pounded by snow here a few times every year. Only once in all my audis have I ever been stuck and it was not really a grip thing. I stopped in 2 feet of snow to help someone else (they were blocking my way on my street). When I got back in my car I had to get a couole of people to help push me backwards. Then I asked them to clear out of the way and they said ‘are you nuts? You’re going to get stuck again’

I didn’t. Just cruised through.

Tires do make all the difference. Years ago I had light weight summer tires on my car and thought oh I have quattro this snow is no match for that. Turns out with hard summer tires you just have 4 ice skates that just slide all over the road

I just have Goodyear Eagle Sport 4-season tires on there, they are M+S rated, but a far cry from dedicated-snow tires. I was admittedly a little worried at first, especially since the tread is at about 60%… turns out they worked great though. These cars must be beasts with dedicated winter tires.

Quattro and snow tires almost make me too comfortable…if that swaggerish makes any sense to you guys.

The confidence is great, but it’s easy to get a little cocky when the car is driving the same as it would on a dry summer day.

I wish our snow storms looked like that ;D

Quattro and good winters is a great combination for winter… unless the snowbanks are higher than your vehicle lol

For most of the winter we drive through snow tunnels

Stil jealous I don’t have the soothing sounds of a v10!

I wish we had snow in MN. I bought hakka r2’s and haven’t had any fun days with them.

contract two stage snow blowers for the win.

Living in chiago and michigan the two things l learned you never ask for is snow.

I need a new snow blower, my last one died mid season, I bought that Airens snowtek at home depot in an emergency lol. Its not the best but it does get the job done with some patience.
