Seattle drag: October 5th @Pacific Raceways

Nicely done breaking into the 11s! I wish I could’ve come as well but I ended up not being able to make it.

I’m definitely interested if you end up going again sometime.

tuned in!

J, agreed on the LC comment… It seems to hold at 4Kish rpms for a good second or so after the car starts moving… Also, noticed the car short shifted the 1-2 that probably cost him a few hundreths… I would like to see how the car would launch if LC is engaged but you dump the brake right at 4K rpm before it hits it’s target value and holds, almost like sweeping the revs and using the brake as a clutch on a stick car if that makes sense? Wonder what the logs look like from a bypass perspective while LC is in use? Shifts seem a little slow/soft compared to what I am used to but again tough to tell on just a vid… I guess I’m still not sold on the DSG tune but hard to tell via video and as you mentioned the gearing is another change that I am not used to. I know I mentioned this many times but the B8’s gearing is much better setup for the strip…

Also, feel the same about hot lapping the car just seems to run better especially if you don’t have to sit at all and can get air to keep moving across the heat exchanger… sitting for a while definetly raises IAT’s and hurts performance…

Like you said good stuff either way and glad he is in the 11’s!

What values should I log?

Block numbers might have changed, should be somewhere around these.

Group 15 - Field 0 Vehicle speed
Group 25 - Field 0 Engine speed
Group 216 - Field 0 IGA_AD_1_KNK[0]
Group 222 - Field 0 Ignition angle; actual
Group 233 - Field 0 Lambda probes actual; bank1
Group 345 - Field 0 Air mass
Group 352 - Field 0 Intake manifold pressure
Group 556 - Field 0 Intake air temperature
Group 623 - Field 0 Charge air pressure specified value
Group 625 - Field 0 RFP_AV

Hit “group UDS requests” and “turbo”…

My track must have just added it, there is another TNT October 20th.

I am planning on going. I will do no lc passes. Pray for no rain.

Here, copied from my old AZ post. Use the set of variables above, if it doesn’t work it may be one too many blocks. Remove charge air specified, and so on until it works. Also check block 39, ambient air pressure, and write it down so you can reference your true boost pressure.

[QUOTE=ilspazzaneve;7362756]Here’s what to log, to start. Go to the ENGINE controller, then hit ADVANCED MEAS VALUES:

http://www.ross-tech.com/vcds/tour/screenshots/adv-meas-01.png

You’ll only be able to log 8 or so blocks at a time, any more and it won’t read. Note some of the block #s are different on different cars, but it’ll be close, just match the descriptor instead. Don’t forget to hit TURBO and GROUP UDS REQUESTS to speed up the sampling time.

Pick your blocks like below, then hit LOG, then START. Your log is a *.csv file, saved where you specified.

I’ll usually do a run like this at the beginning to get the ambient conditions and check to make sure everything is OK.

Group 10 - Field 0 Outside air temperature
Group 15 - Field 0 Vehicle speed
Group 25 - Field 0 Engine speed
Group 39 - Field 0 Ambient air pressure
Group 345 - Field 0 Air mass
Group 352 - Field 0 Intake manifold pressure
Group 538 - Field 0 Cat. temperature; bank 1
Group 544 - Field 0 TI_1_HOM[0] (this is cylinder 0 injection time)
Group 556 - Field 0 Intake air temperature
Group 566 - Field 0 Throttle valve angle (don’t be surprised if it only opens 80 degrees, that is normal)

Here’s a knock log with all cylinders (the individual cylinders show how much timing is being pulled per cylinder due to knock)

Group 15 - Field 0 Vehicle speed
Group 25 - Field 0 Engine speed
Group 216 - Field 0 IGA_AD_1_KNK[0]
Group 217 - Field 0 IGA_AD_1_KNK[1]
Group 218 - Field 0 IGA_AD_1_KNK[2]
Group 219 - Field 0 IGA_AD_1_KNK[3]
Group 220 - Field 0 IGA_AD_1_KNK[4]
Group 221 - Field 0 IGA_AD_1_KNK[5]
Group 222 - Field 0 Ignition angle; actual
Group 623 - Field 0 Charge air pressure specified value

Here’s one which I use to gauge performance

Group 15 - Field 0 Vehicle speed
Group 25 - Field 0 Engine speed
Group 216 - Field 0 IGA_AD_1_KNK[0]
Group 222 - Field 0 Ignition angle; actual
Group 233 - Field 0 Lambda probes actual; bank1
Group 345 - Field 0 Air mass
Group 352 - Field 0 Intake manifold pressure
Group 556 - Field 0 Intake air temperature
Group 623 - Field 0 Charge air pressure specified value
Group 625 - Field 0 RFP_AV

What to log:
Usually the best logs are long pulls in 3rd or 4th from a nice low RPM, say 2500 or lower, up to redline.
Some 1/4 mile logs are fun too, from a dig.
Start your log about 10 seconds before your running, at least, since you may find on a slow PC the log file starts a bit late.

The *.csv file
Try to limit your logs to the runs themselves, it’s a pain in the ass to wade through 9000 rows to look for the pulls. If you have 20 mins of logs, please try to edit it such that there are a few rows before, and a few runs after the pulls, but leave the headers on the rows.

For those with DSG
For those with an S-tronic tranny, get used to not activating the kickdown switch, or else the tranny will downshift and you won’t have a full pass in that gear. By “almost” flooring the accelerator pedal (you can actually feel the stiffness of the kickdown switch at this point), you’ll still get full throttle, but stay in the gear you wanted. You can check this with VCDS, the throttle will open to 85%/80degrees (this is full open, don’t worry).

Posting:

If you use gmail, that makes life a whole lot easier. Import your *.csv file to Google Docs as a spreadsheet. When you open the spreadsheet “file”, “Publish”, and copy the spreadsheet link and post it here. Easy!

On the dyno my cars hp jumps considerably from the first pull to the third pull, with just a fan on it. I don’t think it’s just my car, as tuners witness the same when I’ve quizzed them.

When I did the 12.2 pass, it was on the third pull in a row at the end of the night (and no launch control lol).

As far as short shifting in first, it was worse prior to the dsg tune (1k lower)

First run no lc

Second on the left.

Logged that last one. It will be interesting to see why I’m so slow! Lol

I don’t think you are slow… It’s all gearing if comparing to b8s…

Interesting wellarmed, how close in succession were the dyno passes? Curious to see if IAT was climbing or not, assuming there’s no logs though…

Guys, thinking again, while the b8.5 launch seems tame to those in a B8, he’s got big gearing, so the RPMs just seem more tame but the speed must be there. Maybe the B8.5 is actually going through the 60’ in 1st while we’re shifting at the beam…scratch that, just watched the video and the short shift evens that out.

Also the other shifts, I agree with prime, seem tame compared to my car and other B8s that bang them out hard. Seems to almost be a bit of clutch slip there? I wonder if it drops timing off during shifts like the B8, maybe it keeps the power on and slips the clutches instead…? All guessing.

Can we move this thread to the B8 S4 section, maybe Todd or someone can comment what’s going on here…

I love it when consistently dipping into the 11s is considered slow. Ha

On my way to the track right now. I brought my laptop to log. Weather is so good that my wife gave me the go ahead.

Hopefully i have enough fuel to make it there

Nice! Conditions appear to be pretty good… Look forward to the logs… 11.8x!

tuned in!

Last run. Did lc and released the brake as soon as it hit 4k, no waiting.

What values should I log?

I might have missed boost. Dammit. First time logging, my apologies.
