Shifter Assembly removal/replacement

Hi all, new here. I have a Audi s6 with a bad shifter assembly. The car still goes into gear and is drivable but it seems like the selector does not get “locked” into place. I can easily move the selector to N from D without having to push the button.

That brings me to my question, is it possible to reach the shifter connector (the red cable connecting the shifter to the transmission) without having to remove the engine? If not possible, can I possibly just replace the shifter itself? I have a spare assembly that I’m ready to throw in.

Thanks

I assume you mean when you are NOT stationary with your foot on the brake.

I have had my 07 S6 for 11 years now and have always been able to shift from D to N without pressing the button.

I had my shifter out last year when I had an issue with the P-N reed switches not letting me take the key out of the ignition.

You do NOT need to drop the engine to disconnect the shift cable from the shifter mechanism. If you support the rear of the transmission on a jack, you can remove the rear transmission mount, unbolt the exhaust and disconnect the driveshaft at the transmission end to give you room to drop the shifter down and disconnect the cable.
