Skywagon's Return to the Dragstrip

Then there’s also the weird thing he’s doing with shifting the car in manual mode and back to auto mode to prevent early downshifting. Which I will comment happens so fast I’m not even sure how you would tell.

As a random background - signals like RPM or MPH are sent over the CAN bus to the instrument cluster from the ECM or ABS module (this is how certain tuners do map switching for instance, they hijack some random needle in your cluster). It’s possible that the tach might not be able to keep up with your acceleration in 1st gear, and you think it’s short shifting even though it isn’t. So unless you are logging the ECM and getting these signals with VCDS (which samples pretty slow admittedly), it’s all speculation.

It would be pretty interesting to log these “manual mode” runs while at the 1/4 mile strip.

This. WTF was REVO doing with his car on the dyno for so long? What a colossal waste of time for such little gain. His trap was nearly the same the previous time as well and I would attribute the faster ET to DA or a tail wind.

There is some other dude on AZ(Fireball’) championing his REVO tune and 11.9x that won’t shut up about it so its obvious that REVO is capable of running 11s.

drob, good point but with his good 60’s(I know he doesn’t think they’re good) I doubt it’s the 1-2 shift… I also don’t buy this the car is so fast the tach can’t keep up… We aren’t driving 1500+HP monsters here… My tach keeps up fine(maybe 100 or so rpm variance)…

d.p., exactly… Poor sky had to drive to the WV and spend days on his custom tune and got nothing out of it… LOL Funny thing is back in 2011 when I showed APR that their tune was dumping boost in cold weather I sent them a series of log files and my ecu and they fixed it w/o me having to go there and get on their dyno, thus their v2 release and Jeff did the same thing with GIAC I believe… Again, not to be redundant but if this tune is dumping boost now it will be very slow come summer… As for the fireball dude I know he posted a slip and all but claimed no dsg tune… I find that very hard to believe but whatever, maybe they made a custom hero tune, for him like they did a member on here, hopefully it doesn’t end the same way… Anyone seen any of his logs?

unless he has 500lbs of weight, it’s not that

no, he was busy concentrating on driving. His DSG car.

My point is he is eyeballing the tach saying he is short shifting 1-2 or 2-3 (no idea what he’s actually doing, would be good for in car go pro lol), based on nothing more factual than that.

They were proving that dyno tuning is a joke when it comes to performance, but is great for fooling simpletons on forums. The usual…

They had his car for 2 full days (this is the guy who couldn’t drive 4 hrs for GIAC…even though there are a bunch of GIAC dealers closer) and they did ZERO performance testing.

This would be tantamount to building a jet plane and assuming that it will fly because a computer said so. There’s a reason there are test pilots out there. nervous ones…because computers don’t tell you everything.

I have video and logging proof (B8.5 S4 GIAC S2) that the tach needle doesn’t keep up with the actual RPM/shift point. I sent the logs to GIAC and it was confirmed.

Good to know I don’t need to drive to West Virginia to “fix” my REVO tune.

Drob,
I have seen my tach go to 7000 RPM numerous times in first gear. Tach lag? Bullshit! After the car goes into second gear I simply move the lever, to the left. I did no “manual” mode runs. Car was upshifting at 5500 RPM during most runs. Thanks.

Come on Ron? I was invited, it was free and I had the time. I will log, post slips and videos ASAP. Then again why open myself up to more?

I’m sure you were invited they don’t own a car so they needed yours to “test” on… Sorry didn’t know it was free but honestly they shouldn’t have needed your car to be physically there and on the dyno to fix the bypass issue which was my point in the post you quoted… In the end they’ve done nothing for your car from a performance standpoint really… Do you have the various logs Revo took throughout this process? I’d like to see the logs from when they fixed it as there shouldn’t be bypass and these would be telling… Not sure how to answer your last point as I’m fine either way I know what the issue is just glad I didn’t purchase the tune and have to live with it… I will say we tried to warn you all along…

“Yeah he owns like a 98 A4…you’d rather trust him than people here who own and have owned multiple S/RS models.”

Swager,
It is truly bizzare that you are so angry at the world that you have to shit on a track worker. Such anger! The man is a nice guy and has an interest in Audi’s. Obviously he is only worthy of your scorn. I’ll make sure he knows of your hateful feelings. As you know he is directly behind the launching area and unlike you, an eye witness. Of course you are clairvoyant or you astrally projected your self to Coastal Planes dragway Sat. Neat stunt, why didn’t you say hello? The fact that you are so delusional as to think you know what happened Sat is nuts. Leave others out of this, if you can. Write what you like about me all you want. Personally I don’t give a damn!

Skywagon still hasn’t addressed the fact that REVO blew a bunch of smoke up his ass.

His trap speeds show 2 things

  1. his car is down on power considerably, vs. APR and GIAC stage 2 cars
  2. they did fuck all when he was there for 2 days

Ron, I’m starting to think about GIAC. I’ve got to stop the shortshifting and traction issues. I will log and post all ASAP. As soon as I buy GIAC I still get grief. Of course that seems to be the favorite passtime of many on this site. I can take it, after all most are simply light weights.

Yes, you will still get grief. But not because of what tuning company sticker is on your car. It’s because you’re an obtuse clod.

What would you like to do about it beside exercise awesome amounts of keyboard courage?

B8s (mine at least), will short shift 1-2 if it detects too much wheel spin. That said, I still trap 116+ run sub 1.7 60’s and still ET lower than 11.99 when it does, so that also, is not your issue.

Your car just isn’t jiving with whatever you have done to it.

Wheel spin is not your issue, you dropped an 1.67 60’ and my best time ever was a 1.65’ so stop with the wheel spin.

Like Ron stated I was able to send GIAC logs from cold weather testing for GIAC and they made the necessary adjustments to improve their tune and release their V2 tune. No need for me to drive anywhere.

I think skywagon is the only guy on this thread who runs 11’s in a car he owns. Sky - I’d like to know how you did it and how I can do it too.

Folks, here is a post I put on Audizine. It has some information some may find of interest??

Fireball,
I have never spun before, except in Dec a minimal amount. Yesterday I was spinning and hopping, all tires, intermittently. I’m running Michelin Pilot Super Sports all around. About 12000 miles on them. I suspect that the finer softer rubber tread, being now non-existent, has reduced my traction abilities somewhat. I’m running 295’s in the back and 265’s up front. My tires are searching for traction for upwards of 3/4’s of a second? I can tell this by simply listening to the videos my son made. I’m, by NO MEANS, suggesting I’m losing 3/4s of a second ET.

It is impossible to extrapolate out of this spinning how much it is effecting my ET’s…one or two tenths? I sure don’t know. I think the possibility of this hop/spin is causing short shifting from first to second, about 5500 RPM, Yes I have the REVO DSG tune as well.

I also think that repeated launches from 4200 RPM could be making the DSG a little too warm. I have seen the car go up to 7000 rpm in first, no tach lag, many times in the past. I thought I had discovered a way to keep it in 1st up to 7000 rpm, lock it in first, let the governor shift it out of 1st at 7000 rpm, a designed safety item because the shift does happen quickly, and then after the shift simply move the lever left to “S”. Even this stupid old fart is capable of a simple procedure like that. However, that did not work yesterday.

I also think my transmission may be overheating to a degree. I had two L/C failures, RPM’s would only go to 2000 RPM at line. The car just had a 15000 mile check so I’d wager all fluid levels are OK in the DSG? I do know my boost is bleeding off quickly. During some practice launches on Friday I noted, with my P3 gauge, Euro Code boost tap installed, boost hitting a peak of about 16.9 PSI at around 5500 RPM but quickly dropping down into the high 15’s PSI as the RPMs reached into the 6000 range.

I plan on posting all time slips and videos as soon as I can. I also plan on do some logging soon as well.
I’ve been contemplating a potential reason for my lower trap speeds for some time now. My rear tires are 1/2 inch less diameter than the fronts or, obviously, 1/4 inch less in radius. That amounts to a 1.8% difference in diameter, well inside the alleged 2% limit. The stagger was my idea and planned. I’ve been spanked accordingly.

Regardless, these cars are highly computerized and I can’t help but wonder if that small difference is reducing power to the wheels to one degree or another? I’ve also been in contact with REVO since yesterday. I went up to their WV spaces because I was invited. All work performed by them was FREE. It was far from a waste of time. I stayed FREE with a buddy and ate FREE as well. Since my car has headers and a few other mods they were able to solve some issues as well as learn from the car, 2014 b8’5.

However, if this problem can’t be solved GIAC is not out of the realm of possibility. Thank you.
