So I went on a dyno...

So there was a local dyno day going on and at first I didn’t really plan to go but then I figured ah what the hell, won’t hurt.

I have a tiptronic B7 S4 with the JHM Tune, piggies and magnaflow 16689 x-pipe rs4 catback.
First 2 runs were done in 4th gear and I was only getting like 250 or so hp which seemed too low in my opinion, but the torque was there, so I told the guy to try 3rd gear, and that ended up being the best result.

Max power: 272.55
Max torque: 276.95

I know the dyno doesn’t mean much as it always varies among cars and such. Temperature was around 66 or so with humidity around there too. I am planning to go to the track to see what I will run.

But now I came up with two questions. After the runs were done, and I got in my car to go home, I noticed my ac was on -_-, would that really rob me of power? Does the ac shut off at WOT?

And does it matter what company I use for my fuel? I read a few things about people using Shell vs say BP. Is there really that much of a difference? I’ve been using BP since I had my A4.

EDIT: 93 Octane / Dynojet

a/c should shut off

what kind of dyno? 93 octane? There are some logs you can run to check on the fuel if you are interested.

93 octane and it was a dynojet

what were the other cars dynoing?

I only had enough time to see 2 more cars which was a Stage 1 B5 S4 that did 249 with some 02 sensor issue and a E92 M3 that did like 320. Not sure if any other V8’s came as I was leaving when people started coming.

His car is a tip. Maybe the TC isn’t locking up all the way? Or the low number is a result of the tip using some of the engines power? The TC will only lock up 100% in tip mode. Sport and Drive it still slips a lot

I thought everyone dyno’d their S4’s in 4th gear? How different is the gearing in a mechatronic?

What should I be getting? Closer to 300 than what I got?
Stupid me should of checked if he put it in tip or just got up to the gears in S or something.

I’ve heard some say the AC switches off at WOT and I’ve heard some say it stays on. BUT every time I see a dyno run of our cars doing a AC on vs AC off run the AC off run is better. One Example

Looks to me like you’re pretty much on point with AC on and running piggies.

meh. You dyno’d about 275/275 which is normal for a barely modded tip car. The tips usually dyno down in the 240-250whp/235-245 wtq range.

All you have is tune piggies and catback … so I think the numbers are just about right. Hopefully justincredible chimes in.

Again though, an E92 M3 that was 414 crank hp dyno’d 320 whp. That’s 23% drivetrain loss…on a RWD car. If you apply an AWD premium of say 4% to that, and make it 27%, coderedpl’s 275 numbers mean he’s around 370 crank hp/370 crank torque. That’s 30 crank hp and 68 crank torque over stock.

also,l I don['t know how the fuck you dyno a tip. I tried to log one and it was a pain in the arse. Thing was kicking down all the time. Only if you got into it 100% wot starting at like 4500 would it let you push to redline without kicking down.

^^^Yeah. Apparently, DSG B8 S4s kickdown on the dyno as well.

I believe he had it in tip, it goes up pretty high before switching, but as long as you don’t press it all the way down to the button it shouldn’t kick-down.

I guess with the A/C off I would probably/maybe get up to the 280 range or maybe a dead even 275. Either way, if that’s what I should expect, than fine, means my car is running good.

are you sure it was WOT and not 92%?

anyway, didn’t you read my post above? if an E92 M3 is 45 whp more than you, that’s about right. Was he DCT or whatever they call it? Or manual?

I’m 100% sure it kicks off. When I was trying to figure out what is wrong with my a/c last summer, it would kick off every time the pedal hit somewhere around 80%? I didn’t check what RPM it kicks off at if you aren’t at the throttle threshold for that to turn it off. I bet it’s somewhere around 4500

Can’t say for sure as I didn’t really look at the gauges, i was too busy admiring the exhaust tone lol

Yea it sounds about right I get that.
M3 was auto

Was at tach motorsports also yesterday…

Temps were 63F, elevation was 5 ft, pressure was 29.5 inches hg, humidity was 73.1%.

Came a little later and here are some other cars that ran.

B8 S5 6 speed with awe tuning track exhaust and apr intake… 280 whp in fourth gear.

Stock B8 S4 DSG…312 whp (fourth gear)

GIAC stage 1 B8 S4 DSG… 370 whp (also fourth)

They all had trouble with the torque reading.

M3 was DCT with an axle back and some hack tune. Put down stock numbers - about what other stock m3s get on Dynojet.

Some pulls with an RS4 vs same M3 (plus passenger) later that night had RS4 ahead by about ~2 cars.

Rs4 had intake spacers, k&n, ecs h pipe, Jhm lw fw and stage 4 clutch, and Jhm lw rotors.

lol - Tony ran the M3 (+ passenger) and put two car lengths on him?

Ya so he says. I was up front spotting for them. When we got together after- m3 guy was impressed.

They did a few runs.
