So what shall I do for the top half of my engine?

As the day grows closer to me actually having my car back, I get more comfortable with the idea of just keeping it and enjoying it for what it is. That being said, what should I do next?

  1. Since the bottom half of the engine has been rebuilt to handle plenty of power, I’d like to do the same with the top half. Please let me know what you’d do if it were your car.

  2. I also want a new/rebuilt transmission with better gearing. What would you get?

  3. Any other high performance things I may have forgotten?

Nobody wants to share any advice?

I would take very little advice from any of the forums especially the ones that believe their making 1000+chp lol! Take whatever advice you may get from them & do the exact opposite :stuck_out_tongue:

Like you need 80mm throttle body, 2.8 ported heads & 2.5" charge pipes etc (the bigger the better ???).

Your tranny gearing is fine, this isn’t the reason people aren’t going fast, reality strikes @ the track and that dyno chart in the glove box isn’t making much sense right about now " ??? 125mph" but my car made 750whp on that mustang dyno.
Make phone call & ask why does she only run 125mph but makes 750whp, answer is “these cars aren’t made for the 1/4 mile the gearing is all wrong” run some 60-130 times bro! ::slight_smile: ::slight_smile: ::slight_smile:

Why are you so combative today? The simple question was asked about how to ensure a stout top end to go with a built lower.

I would look at a changing out springs and retainers, also consider changing at least the exhaust valves for either supertech or Ferrea.

Unless you are going for broke, you can stick with the apb heads, even the apb cams

Once again it all comes down to end goals, build it how you want, for whatever purpose you want.

no it wasn’t EYESpi. The OP asked if he should change his transmission to something that is better geared for acceleration. See point/question 2.

The fucking B5 has 4.11s doesn’t it?

Callinuout is not being combative with the OP…he is telling him to stop listening to forum bullshit noise because it’s filling his head with lies and fluff.

Does the B5 community really think that even though we have had half a dozen guys trapping 130-140 MPH making 500-600 whp…that suddenly the B5 S4 gearing is no good just because a bunch of Tial guys are dynoing 600-700 whp (at AMD and EPL, the kit builders/tuners) and trapping 125???

What transmission is in that 9 second USP VR6T car? Or the OZZ guy’s car who ran the massive nitrous shot? If that’s the 01E transmission, those guys are trapping 150+MPH…

Hmm… It sounds like I can leave the transmission alone until it dies on it’s own. Heads, intake manifold, cam, I suppose I’ll just keep reading. Just where? lol

These look nice:

Sorry, my mistake, his post just seem emotionally charged in response to a non emotional question.

As for the trans, I agree no issues with the stock gear ratios, stick with a fresh rebuilt unit

who is the transmission rebuild company of choice? Is there one?

I remember watching a JHM DIY video of them doing a rebuild a few years ago and thinking…this is a DIY? WTF. Looked pretty awful to take on, but I’m not exactly awesome at working on the car so that could be part of it.

Transmissions should be dealt with by Scott at Advanced Automotion, or the DIY JHM kit. If you try and go to the dealer and order the parts separately, the cost is outrageous

leave the tranny alone.

As for the heads. rule of thumb… over 120k Do the springs-exhaust valves- retainers and keepers.

That JHM diy dvd is tits, and worth every penny. I used it back when i was doing my 6 speed swap to rebuild my trans.
That rear hollow shaft bearing got me though… “you should heat this up but i’ve done it cold”, says the video. lol… don’t do it cold, heat it up, $200 mistake by me.
