[SOLVED] Advice: error codes for AdvanceKey and TPMS

Relatively speaking, my 2007 S6 has been running trouble free since August. But over the summer I had an insurance claim that involved body work repair and the replacement of 1 rear tire. Ever since then, I’ve had 2 annoying issues:

 1. AdvanceKey (keyless ignition) doesn’t work
 2. the TPMS fault always comes on.

In dealing with TPMS, I replaced 2 front tires so 3 are new and 1 is new-ish. And today, an eagle-eyed tech at the tire shop spotted a rubber stem coming from the insurance replacement. He believed that there is no TPMS sensor in that tire. I spoke to my summer mechanic about it, and he insisted that Audis to not use sensors inside tires – I believe he is referring to “indirect” TPMS which may be a feature on newer Audis.

Can anyone confirm that our 2007 S6s use TPMS sensors attached to the stem before I confront my local mechanic? I’m a little stuck because he’s the only game in town.

Also, does anyone have any experience with the AdvanceKey faults before I start to swap parts?

Parking brake:

pretty confident they’re in-wheel sensors.

I can confirm they are in wheel sensor. You can check your other wheels if they have the sensors, they are a part of the valve stem.

thx for the confirmation. I also saw from the valve stems, but my mech was pretty insistent. Now he’s ghosting me–haha.

Any thoughts on the AdvanceKey faults? The long story here is that it worked (even as I had to replace the front door lock once), then I got body work done on the pass REAR door panel, and it didn’t work when I got the car back. I took it back to the mech, who took apart the front door handle and said that was the source of the fault. But that was never touched by the shop.

Here’s what RossTech says on 00180:
Possible Solutions
Check Wiring/Connectors from/to Access/Start Authorization Antenna; Passenger Side (R135)
Check Access/Start Authorization Antenna; Passenger Side (R135)
Any chance these connectors are in the pass rear door? I don’t know where to start looking. And (of course) my mech is sensitive to this issue because his buddy runs the body shop.

The access/start authorization antenna (R135) is in the right rear door.

Thanks for the R135 image. I think that may be my problem.

If you lost functionality after having body work done in that area, I would ring out all the wires and check for shorts before even thinking about replacing any modules.

I do not know what kind of work you had done, but if they drilled any holes to pull dents out, they may have knicked a wire bundle.

back to TPMS, the car is 11 yrs old and I don’t know when they were last changed. Does anyone know if the batteries are replaceable? If not, should I just replace all 4 sensors or can you just disable the system…

And I have this for a PN: https://www.europaparts.com/tire-pressure-sensor-kit-tpms-4f0907275d.html $80

Has anyone found them cheaper?

Or better yet––I have winter rims that I am no longer using. Can I just move the TPMS from one of them? Are they mix n match?

I used these for my winter wheels.

4 sensors for ~$100

Best deal I could find at the time considering, like the link you posted, almost everywhere they are $60-100 PER sensor… ???

I finally had time to bring the car to the mechanic to open the rear pass door and check the R135 antenna.

He said the wiring looked fine, so either it the antenna is dead or it wasn’t the problem. Also, note that the antenna is flipped compared to the photo in the manual.

The thing is, my Carista OBD scan shows the following:

Ignition authorization:
00180 - Access/Start Authorization Antenna, Passenger Side (R135)
00191 - Passenger's Door Handle Touch Sensor (G416)

But his VAGCOM scan shows only the door handle fault (which was there before when keyless was working) and misses the Antenna fault. So he thinks I’m smoking something…

Is my only choice is to actually replace the antenna? Any other ideas before I go that route?

Is there any way you can even look or log the antenna signal with VAG COM

I dunno. I only have a carista scanner. But somehow the VAGCOM scam by my mechanic did not even pick up the antenna fault.

The fault lies not in the stars, but in my mechanic’s body shop. In other words, this whole thread was a giant face palm.

TPMS:
when the body shop repaired the damaged rim, they installed the new tire with a standard RUBBER valve stem. No TPMS monitor! The diagnostic was hampered because a) my mechanic believed the car had TPMS built into the ECU (incorrect for C6) and b) one front tire was worn to the point where the tire belt were beginning to show on the inner edge of the tread. I replaced the front tires (well past due, so I can’t fault him) and on a 2nd visit my eagle-eyed tire mechanic spotted the rubber stem. I had my mechanic re-mount the faulty tire with a TPMS sensor from a winter rim.

AdvanceKey:
I ordered a replacement antenna from WolfAuto over eBay ($25), swapped it into the passenger rear door, cleared the codes and tried the keyless start. Nothing. Then a stroke of inspiration - I swapped the 2 pin black lead (from photo my mechanic snapped after removing the door card) with a similar 2-pin brown lead cleared the codes–and voila! keyless start works! The body shop plugged the speaker lead into the R135 antenna. doooh!

but I’m happy now that all systems are back to go. (except for the flap-less IM…)

continuing the saga from a couple years ago…

I solved my original problem by using one of the the TPMS sensors from my winter rims. Now it’s time to pay the piper…

I got a new set of Blizzak LM005 snow tires and had them mounted a couple days ago. I brought along the TPMS sensor I ordered from here:

and then discovered the tire shop didn’t have compatible stems on hand. Apparently they are special?

So he mounted the last tire with a normal rubber valve stem (and charged me 10Euro for that) and now the missing TPMS sensor throws an error.

Does anyone know where I can get just a replacement stem to go the with TPMS sensor from above?
