[SOLVED] Bluetooth streaming with MMI 2G High

If I’m going to stick around with this platform, I’ve got to find a better way to connect with my iPhone. I know that AMI with a 30-pin Bluetooth dongle might work for BT streaming, but I’m not sure how smooth it is. Especially since AMI units are still pretty pricey. Are there any better options?

What about just a simple 2.5MM AUX-IN to the BOSE unit? I’ve seen YT videos about enabling AUX-IN from the MMI hidden menus, but the wiring diagrams all seem to suggest it won’t work for BOSE units. Does anyone have firsthand experience?

Heres what i did for Bluetooth streaming with some help from a friend but you will need the external AV option in the MMI options.

Total cost of the install was £25.43

The parts required are as follows

  1. Connects2 CT29AU02 lead. I got mine here - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/160690745278?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649
One thing to note is that there was a manufacturing fault with my first lead where the left and right negatives had separate pins when they should be joined giving you 5 pins to plug in.
Installation instructions are here - http://www.connects2downloads.co.uk/c2/files/InstallationGuides/CT29AU02.pdf
Although my layout looks different it was just a case of removing 3 nuts and 1 bolt and the whole cage lifted and swung into the boot for easy access.

  2. Ipod to RCA including power lead here - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/130733565203?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649
You simply need to locate a suitable switched live and earth point in which to wire this in and connect to the above lead.

On thing to note is that you need to make sure the power output matches the Bluetooth receiver; i went with 5v as that meant i could connect my 4c directly to charge it.

  1. Generic Bluetooth receiver such as - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/221402870065?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649
This receiver needs a power source as the lead above and negates the need for battery’s

All in all a very simple install and works perfectly with my factory fit telephone prep by fading out the music when a call is received and continuing once the call has ended.

you can connect an external AV to MMI 2G?!??

I know I have a rear backup camera so there is some kind of AV already connected, but I didn’t know there was an AV2 option. How do you access the external AV from MMI - is there a separate menu option accessible from the CD/AUX page?

I’m going to have to look into this.

Do you have this option in the MMI?

I have built in TV so when i press the CD/TV to button I also have to scroll through the external AV 1 & 2 options.

No, I don’t. My MMI is US spec and they usually don’t allow you to watch TV while you drive a car. :-\

I found that menu in my MMI, but the only item listed is CD. No TV or Aux inputs

I’m getting this cable: http://www.ebay.com/itm/261597749671
My mechanic said he’s going to look into reflashing the MMI to change NAV from US to EUR and he’ll also try to enable an AUX-IN while he’s at it. It’ll be much less expensive than getting an AMI if it works…

I finally got my MMI working after 6 mos! Now that I have music again, I realize that all I really want is seamless BT streaming from my iPhone. I do NOT have an Audi AMI adapter, but as I understand it, you still need an iPod cable adapter and then a BT adapter and somehow get power to it.

But I found this unit advertised (mainly on the German eBay site) as an alternative:

Has anyone ever tried this with their S6?

Y’all have ‘TV’ as standard in EU? What the hell?! Lucky SOBs! Lol.

“Daniels Coding & Design” on Facebook. He can do this. He sells complete conversions to get TV.

Apparently, this is the same as the VNSMedia unit––of which are a few reviews online. see: http://vnsmedia.shoper.pl/en_GB/p/Audi-Music-Interface-MMI-2G-All-in-One-Bluetooth-Streaming/223

But it appears that I would need to update the MMI to v4610. Has anyone tried to do this using discs from eBay?
see: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Audi-MMI-2g-HIGH-Software-Update-4610-A6-A8-Q7-for-USA-cars-/332793635251

I’ve updated my mmmi with disc I should have them on my computer I burned them and then update I also have other options but of course you know that

Yes. I know that–and I’m jealous. MMI 3G+ would be a nice upgrade. But now that I got my MMI working with just a PC board swap this BT adapter seems like an easier route to get BT streaming. But it’s good to know that I can upgrade MMI without anything special–just discs I get from ebay. My local mechanic seemed to believe you needed a special internet key.

It looks like you got it working so this is a bit late but I used this and it was simple plug and play with android and from what I read it is even better with apple. Just to give another option if someone else is looking.

I haven’t done anything yet–but I dont have AMI and they still seem pricey for something so out of date.

I was looking at this unit, http://vnsmedia.com/en_GB/p/AUDI-MUSIC-INTERFACE-MMI-2G-AMI4-BLUETOOTH-STREAMING/103, but I would have to update my MMI and I haven’t gone on eBay to buy a CD yet.

I finally managed to get BT streaming with the S6!!! Total cost was about $175. Here’s what I did:

  1. update MMI SW from 3360 > 4410 (US version)
    see: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Do-it-yourself-Kit-MMI-Bluetooth-Update-for-2004-2008-Audi-A6-A8-Q7-A5/273409816452
    (h/t LakeTahoeQuattro)

  2. installed BT streaming device
    see: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Bluetooth-Handsfree-USB-SD-Adapter-MP3-Player-for-Audi-A6-C6-2005-2009-MMI-2G/222859924039

The installation was pretty basic – just take out the glove box to get to the CD Changer. My only problem was a blown fuse that took awhile to track down. To access USB, I ran a USB extender cable from the inside of the glove box. Here’s a vid they referenced (not the same device): https://youtu.be/M62P7jgvXQQ

Once installed, I have disc 1-6 on the CD Changer, and then (virtual) disc 7-11 for USB or SD card. Disc 12 toggles between Bluetooth streaming and USB/SD/AUX. I didn’t test AUX because I didn’t have a source. It is supposed to work together with the OEM BT phone by setting a DIP switch, but I didn’t test that.

Audio quality is fine, but it takes a couple extra seconds to recognize the USB discs, and also to connect over BT. But song titles are shown on the screen and the next/prev buttons work.

All in all, I’m happy with the early returns.

Thanks this is definitely worth a shot. I’m tired of running an iPhone cable out of the glove box. Would any Bluetooth streaming device work? The one you listed is priced much higher than the Bovee units I see elsewhere.

The one I am using does NOT connect to the AMI adapter. I don’t have an AMI, so I had to go a different route.
